...the "Going Clear" documentary reminded me of the Steve Martin/Eddie Murphy movie "Bowfinger," which my wife, son, and I re-watched a few weeks ago. Murphy played a neurotic action-movie star who believed he could find peace in a Scientology-like new-age group called Mindhead, which catered to wealthy celebrities. Martin, who played a movie director, knew that Mindhead was a scam, and at one point in the movie, he almost slipped up and called it Mindf*ck. I thought that was a pretty good send-up of Scientology years ago.

EXCEPT, it now reminds me that we are possibly going to have a Scientology rehab center of some sort moving in about five miles from my home in Maryland - near Camp David.

Do they impact surrounding communities much when they move in?

Narcanon? They have several lawsuits against them for deceptive marketing - claiming accreditation they don't have, claiming to provide rehab when it's just scientology auditing, etc. You need to make sure local officials are aware of the trouble they are in.

JUst an interesting tidbit - Trout Run was the location used to represent Camp David in TV episodes of West Wing.

The video is a spoof video from the 90s and has captions for many of the video participants about what eventually happened to them. Almost all of them are something dramatic like "Became a billionaire" or "Sponsors seminars on the evils of Neurotology", but the best one is "Left after Googling 'Neurotology'". Ironically, that's about all it takes to leave cults these days. It wasn't always so easy.

I read the book that "Going Clear" is based on and have not seen the documentary. It will pop up on the torrent sites eventually.

I'll have to check out bowfinger movie.


The SNL spoof made me laugh. Nice snub against scientology.

I liked the super mainstream wholesome-sounding music and the sort of 80s-90's version of normcore clothing and hairstyles, contrasted with the disturbing captions. Fascism is frequently dressed up as a wholesome, utopian dream. The captions seem like wild hyperbole, but are actually pretty close to the truth, aren't they? I haven't seen the docu yet, we don't get HBO...maybe it will come to Netflix...I really think I am going to have to get the book, for sure.

Heard of that new HBO Now that's gonna be on the internet, Apple TV and Sling TV in a week? I'm gonna see it when I get that since I don't have the cable cord and just Roku and Apple TV instead of just getting it from a torrent.
