Hahahahahahaha! I've been through there, working. Ojai and a few other little cities in Ventura/Santa Barbara Counties seem to have a sense of exclusivity and prestige that larger, more densely populated towns don't have.
It's funny watching rich White people do a double take when they meet a Mexican dressed for golf who talks just like they do and looks them square in the eye and doesn't break eye contact. I can see the mental gears shifting...

The gabachos probably thought you were Chi Chi Rodriguez or Lee Trevino.
My husband looks hispanic. Several times when he's been working in the yard, people will stop and ask for his business card. Imagine their surprise when they get handed a card for industrial construction management. They drive away so confused! One person asked him who owned our house. We got a good laugh out of that one.
Hispanics don't do any better. They're always speaking to him in spanish. He doesn't know any Spanish except for dirty words.
Lived in Ventura for many many years. Met my wife there and many friends/family lived in Ojai.
I worked in Oxnard, Ventura, Goleta and Santa Barbara. My surf spots were emmawood and C-street.
My true blue mormon in-laws still live off johnson in ventura. I miss that town, but I love where I live now in Texas. I still go back to visit ventura and Ojai when I feel like surfing once a year.
My kid was born at Ventura Community Hospital. I loved Ventura. Ferraro's Italian, Tipps for Thai, Bombay Bar, Top of the Holiday Inn for cocktails, Dukes Bitchin' Burgers for breakfast, Whales Tail, etc. Emma Woods, Rincon & Ventura County Line for surfing, and Neptune's Net across PCH. Good times. Beats the Hell out of Utah.
I live (and surf) in Oxnard, and was in Ojai last Sunday. We skipped Stake Conference and spent the day in Ojai. Very expensive property, even more so that Ventura/Camarillo/Oxnard
My husband and I stopped briefly at Ojai while we were on holiday in the USA in the mid eighties. We thought it was a pretty place but we hadn't been there long before we were approached by a hippy type who tried to persuade us to visit his ashram nearby. Needless to say we declined!
It is very expensive property here. Lots of folks that where raised here and have thought they could raise their own families here are complaining that housing is way higher than anyone can afford.
Those that can afford to have homes here are those with high incomes in Los Angeles and I guess commute or rent in LA and come here for the weekends.
What Bethie said was absolutely hysterical, and made even a bit more humorous by your innocence. But don't take any offense.
Here's what a foodie source says: "In food and wine pairings, the diversity of Merlot can lend itself to a wide array of matching options."
What Bethie was saying to you is, "Relax, just go with the flow; order the merlot..." Implying that as a resident of Ojai, you are ensconced in the lap of luxury and should not trouble yourself unduly. ...just order the merlot...!
Wow, I never thought about the Hunters here being "the" Hunters"! We have our share of celeb's....Malcolm McDowell, Ted Danson, Bill Paxton; used to have Elvira but I haven't seen her in so long I think she moved back to LA. After the Scientologists bought Larry Hagmann's place I saw several big SUV's driving around, just like you'd expect...rumor was they were going to use his remote estate to "dry out" high profile celebs who fell off the wagon, but a month after they bought I saw it listed agin for a ton more money, so I guess they were trying flip it & make a bundle....
