Yes the church just dedicated another mall basically in Hawaii plus an expansion of the Marriott hotel. The corporate empire of the church cut out of the mountain without hands rolls on. They close schools in New Zealand, the Pacific Islands and Mexico for education of kids but seam to have enough resources to build more commercial centers. Notice the excuse they use of why the Marriott Hotel was dedicated. Also he rushed off to the private Marriott event. Wonder if President Dieter F. Uchtdorf got to watch little of the Lords porn in the Marriott Hotel. As long as it makes money porn is cool. Actually with all the homelessness and hunger not only in the world but in the U.S. and Utah this makes me sick and angry. I Know people will say they donate privately meat and other supplies to shelters in Salt Lake but this is what I say now to people that say that. It is not what the church does and gives that makes me mad, any help is appreciated and does good, it is what they could go with their resources and don't that is so wrong.

Hay I just got an idea of how to solve the liquor problem in Utah. Don't privatize it turn it over to the church and give them the profits and we would have a liquor store on every corner.

From the article:

"Representatives of the owners, the Marriott organization, and also President Uchtdorf spoke before he offered a dedicatory prayer for the new property.

He [President Uchtdorf] explained, when asked why a General Authority dedicates a private business, it’s sometimes done for “owners and investors who we can trust.” He also pointed out that a Church-affiliated company also owns the property."

ya that's strange the bretheren dedicate a private business, If they have supernatural powers and are tight with god, wouldn't that make things unfair in the free market of capitalism?

I remember when huntsman came to USU in a limo years ago to give away $50,000,000, he was escorted by Packer. What packer had to do with the college, the money, or huntsman, I couldn't say?

Money is the only god of mormonism.

Well they may also build a new mall in FL to accommodate the new large subdivision of 500,000 new apartments or homes. Commercial real estate is very lucrative if you get in the right market.

On the other hand, while the church does donate one billion a year, which is a huge amount of money and goods, I am wondering if they should refocus the missionary program into addressing the global poverty, hunger epidemic on a large scale with their 90,000 missionaries? That would seem like a much more honorable and useful project than preaching false doctrine. What say you?

I'm not disputing you, but can you say where the $1 billion per year figure comes from?

They donate at least 1% of what they take in in annual tithes and offerings which has been posted on other threads. I also recall hearing that $1 billion amount quoted in SS back in 2009 when I was a TBM. And I am not sure, maybe other posters know for sure, whether that covers Bishop's Storehouses across the world, etc. There is LDS Charities which is involved in humanitarian relief, but I don't know if that is where the $ goes or if that is a separate fund considering it is a different line item on the tithing slip. I don't go to lds.org anymore, otherwise I'd look it up for you. Sorry I can't be more help.

Just another thought, 1% of $100 billion in assets, etc. is $1 billion. So maybe the morg donates from all their entities and not just from tithes and offerings. The morg's receipts in tithes is much lower now presumably because many tithe payers have left. Does anyone have any facts on this possibility?

these numbers are too high. As I recall they make 6-7 billion in tithing a year and donate 1% of that to humanitarian efforts (pure charity with no strings attached). So it's more like 60 million a year.

The church is suppose to be worth about 25 billion. Much of their infrastructure (like the temples and churches) could not be liquidated for anything close to the cost of building them.

Guess there's no way to know for sure at present. If the LDS church would be more transparent and accountable at LEAST to its MEMBERS, there'd be no guessing about it.

From Deseret News back in February.
http://www.deseretnews.com/article/765668720/Polynesian-Cultural-Center-opens-new-marketplace.html

Here's an excerpt:

"The Hukilau Marketplace, part of the center's ongoing 10-year, more than $100 million renovation, is expected to target a new audience — drive-by visitors — as well as all-day tourists and locals. It also is expected to give a revenue boost to the PCC, which has seen attendance and revenue decline slightly in recent years.

And with the adjacent 144-room Courtyard by Marriott hotel scheduled to open in mid-June, visitors will have another option besides the Turtle Bay Resort and bed-and-breakfasts to spend more than one day on the North Shore."

- $100 MILLION DOLLARS
- And sorry local hotels and B&B's - here comes Marriott!

Could be that revenues are down because you can now share what an overpriced rip off this place is via the internet.

If you want to see the culture and history go the the Bishop Museum in Honolulu. 1/3 of the price, more authentic (actual artifacts) and excellent docents.

This is NOT a multiday or return trip destination. Everything I experienced there was mediocore at best.

Any Marriot I have stayed at has several bars plus fine dining places that sell coffee, tea, wine and booze. They have an xcellent wine list. Plus in the room a bar you can by wine and booze from.call a good example

So an Apostle of God dedicates this place. Am I missing something? That seems like hyprocricy at the highest level. God says to Mormons these thing are not good for yet Marriot wants his building dedicated.

This ays more about the German guy. Does he have no sense of moral values. No sense of ethics. To me, and I may be wrong, this is not what I would call a good example of a true apostle.

So the Church owns the land the hotel sits on. The Church then does not follow its own teaching either unless Marriot hotel does not show porn, or serve tea, coffee or booze. Now you UNDERSTAND WHY YOUNG PEOPLE ARE LEAVING THE cHURCH.

My kids see this and go "WTF!""This is not right." Why can I not drink, or drink tea and coffee yet the Church dedicates a building, or a mall to do this. It has nothing to do with keeping the Sabath Day holy.

Please tell me what to say to my kids to bring them back to Church when they see this? I can't explain it. Some repair shop the Church is!!!

Say $$$ IS KING!

Marriott has been making money off of Mormons for decades and decades.

TSCC has been making money off of Mormons for almost two centuries.

Any wonder why they are working together?

Maybe when you stay at a Marriot, you get a Get-Out-Of-Mormonism-Free card.

BUT, it IS a perfect example of a MORmON apostle = a phony apostle = a real ASSpostHOLE.

I am going to disagree with you, a little bit. The already adult to middle age generation is leaving THE church because of the hypocrisy that you so VERY VERY accurately described / defined. They have been grinding their lives away to make the MORmON world go around and then they see the hypocrisy and realize they have been wasting their time and throwing their lives away.

The kids, the young, those entering adulthood are leaving THE church because it is BORING !!!!!
BORING!!!!!!!! The young have seen their MORmON parents and MORmON grandparents grinding their lives away to make the MORmON world go around, and their parents are miserable, they are worn out, they are mere shells of real human beings and they are boring, and they have a BORING (NON) life. The young do not have to do a lot of deep thinking about the matter, because the outcome of living a LIfE as a MORmON is right in front. They just want to avoid that loss of life. They just want to get out and get away.

When I was young, after contemplating all THE superfluous burdens that THE church wanted to heap on me, I thought: And what days am I supposed to spell off Atlas holding up the world?
Today's MORmON program does not even include the rabid preparation for Jesus to come at any time.

Now young people in THE church just want to get OUT of THE church, so they can live their own life, instead of being a MORmON because they have ALREADY seen too much of what being a MORmON is really like, and in complete contrast to the LDS Inc promotion PR crap, it is agonizing and BORING !!!!

Yes they are, and if you pay for the "self guided" items they will hit you up when you get there to upgrade to the guided or "you will miss too much". It is about 1/3 the size of a Disney Park and I don't need a tour guide to experience that.

It is all about the $$$$

I can't believe this place is owned by the church. You've GOT to check out the website that describes the pricing. Disney must have done the promotion for this park.

This place must be a HUGE money maker for TSCC.

Didn't Briggy Young own a distillery and sell whiskey to wagon trains and employees of the SL Tribune? :-)

They lost my respect when they bought Main Street in SLC in the 90's. As if any of their tithe paying members could afford to buy a street or part of one!!

And now another new mall and expensive tourist trap! Did you look at the link with their prices!??? Good grief! You could go to Disneyland or some other amusement park at those prices!

A certain kind of LDS member will see this as testimony of the "truthfulness" and success of the LDS church. A certain kind of LDS member will greet this news with great enthusiasm.
