Elder Holland recently gave a devotional where he said "friends don't let friends pet."

What does this mean? Does he realize the youth don't use this terminology these days?

It starts around the 1:17 mark.

The term was out of date even when I was a teen.

I was in high school in the 60s, and in Jr. High there was a pamphlet called "necking and petting and how far to go." The answer was don't, because then you are on a highway to hell. Have not heard these terms in years, they were old even then, harking back to the 1940S and bobby sox, malt shops, and Frank Sinatra groupies.

When he uses the word "petting", I think he is just showing youth how out of touch he is. Just like asking a young sister if she had tatted any nice doilies lately..

when I was a wee lad, back in the 60's we used to go to a swimming pool, where there was a sign showing some of the things that were not allowed....
'No diving in the shallow end', with a little cartoon of a man diving...
'No running' with a little cartoon of someone running and falling over
...and 'No Petting' with a cartoon with a man with his arm around a girl - but someone had defaced the sign and added a collar and lead to the cartoon

for most of my youth, I thought petting was treating a girl like a dog; putting her on a collar and lead and taking her for a walk.

it was a long time before I found out what petting was, because - even back in the 60's - it was an old fashioned term, almost never used

It's true. I saw a friend reach into a fence to pet a goat. I knew that goat was mean. I stopped her.

:-D

I always prefer to pet people I consider friends.

Hello little doggie, that's a mighty good looking human you have there. May I pet it?

Trust me it never ends well.

My high school was a petting zoo.

Good times, good times.

In my first bishop's interview when I was twelve, I remember my bishop asking me if I did any "heavy petting." I had no idea what he was talking about, but I responded with a "no" because it seemed like the safest way to reply. That was over thirty years ago and that terminology was out of date then.

I am not sure since I don't have any teens any more (even my grandkids are past the teens), but from what I pick up/hear here and there, it seems to me that both necking and petting are lumped together into "making out." If it's what used to be called "going all the way," that's "hooking up." I could be wrong, but that's what I gather from conversations I hear and things I read. If there is something different, I also would like to know!

I have no idea whether this is still accurate or not, but when I was a teenager, "petting" (an already superseded term from the time of our parents' adolescence) was "making out"...

...and "making out" included everything except penetrative sex (usually, but not always, meaning: a penis was involved somehow)...with French-kissing (mouth-to-mouth) being the earliest-encountered exception to the general rule.

(When I was growing up, "kissing games"---Spin the Bottle, Seven Minutes in Heaven, etc.--- began in parties during seventh grade. Our parents---who, without exception, were always on the premises during parties at that point in our very early adolescence---were usually nice enough to stay out of the family room or wherever...and they announced themselves by making a noise, or calling out somehow, before they entered wherever was our party place in that particular house.)

In today's terms, it is usually called a "hand job"

Google it. There are a lot of videos.

growing up I had seen references to petting but I didn't know it was not about being nice to your pets.

I love the fact that they're still using that mysterious word. I had no clue what masturbation, petting, or necking meant when bishops grilled me in my teens. Neither my parents nor my church teachers had informed me, but I was expected to magically understand the terms in bishop's offices. As for necking, I imagined a boy and a girl touching their necks together, sort of like the "pass the orange" game. My husband tells me they delineated everything very specifically in his ward. Maybe they are more specific for boys than girls?

They get worked up dancing the Charleston, and next thing you know they're necking around. Off come the spats and the argyles, and they're playing footsie. First they get hopped up on chocolate at the malt shoppe and make eyes at each other. Then they hold hands, which is a gateway to smooching. These flapper girls with their bare shoulders are walking pornography. You can't blame a young man for feeling up an exposed clavicle. I have seen bare ankles in broad daylight. It's filth. Shall the youth of Zion fondle?

Elder Holland warms to his theme of "Friends don't let friends pet."

"And kiddos, let me tell you this much: Girls, you must be aware of Mashers, of bounders, cads, heels, rotters scoundrels, dastards, Varlets, rapscallions and the like."

Maybe I should have been more clear in my first post: when I was in high school (in the late 1950s), necking meant kissing and "nuzzling" around, which of course meant French kissing, and often giving/receiving a hickey. BUT there was no action going on with the hands. His hands were above the waist and probably on her back. Move on to "petting," which meant his hands came around to the front, and he was fondling her breasts, but only outside the clothing. He might even rub his hands against her groin area, outside clothing, and she might do the same. Next up: "Heavy petting," which meant same as just plain petting, but INSIDE the clothing. Bra might come off, his pants might get unzipped, her panties might come off from under her skirt. But no penetration! Not digital penetration, not penile penetration. There might even be mutual masturbation, but without penetration ("going all the way"). Damn, it was fun. Excuse me--I need to go take a cold shower...

I dated a foreign student in college and as we were leaving the home of his roommate's parents one of them said, "Don't do any necking!". My date didn't know what the word meant and asked me to explain. I told him I would explain after we left the house.

When we got in the car I told him that necking was what we did every night on our dates. I explained that the Mormon church frowned on it. We looked at each other and laughed.

Hmmm, perhaps Elder Holland should talk about ball gags, fisting, dildoes, etc.?

Some accompanying slides on the Church's Facebook page would be helpful.

Our youth need to be studying so we can beat the commies, not necking in dad's DeSoto at the drive-in movie.
