Do computers make the mission calls now instead of the Prophet and authorities or whomever going to one of the upper rooms in the temple & making the mission calls ? (If this a dead subject & I'm just beating the dead horse , I'm sorry. But anyone pleazzz answer for me.)
I remember in 1976 when I went into the old Mission Home there in SLC , Pres. J. Martell Bird was the Mission Home Pres at the time & he or one of the apostles talked about being in an upper room of the temple & their experiences with Pres. Kimball & the mission calls. It was really cool. But I have a Great Niece & Nephew in Utah who are waiting for mission calls now. When I asked their Mom if their calls had come , she said that they told her that they were waiting on the computers to spit out their mission calls , & then their calls would be mailed to'em. I was like : "WHAT the F#^K ".....So..........does anyone else have any more info on this ??? Thanx.

Just joking. I gather it's mostly computer for the ordinary schmucks, with tweaking and overrides for people with family pull. I'll let more informed posters answer your question.

The word on the street is that the GA share a rotating 'mission call' duty where they sit and, at a minimum, look at photographs in order to be inspired on whom to call as Temple Grounds missionaries, meaning the hot sisters who wander around Temple Square. Gospel eye candy.

Someone here remarked the other day that a bunch of new elders in a mission were sitting around talking and one of them pointed out that their last names, all of them, began with the letters M, N & O...

As exmos, we've all taken the oath, and signed the petition, to not consider either ghawd the father, his son, or the holy ghost as being part of anything the mormon church does. Everything los mormones say or preach is made up by men, some of whom are stupid and venal.

This was recently explained by the church.

Actually computerized calls and auto pen signatures have been the norm for decades.

They call 800 to 900 missionaries per week. No way do they pray over each one in the temple. A computer matches staffing requests from missions with applicant list. A few applicants may get "friends and family" special handling.

Pretty mundane, as is most of life.

The Mormon church is a business posing as an "inspired religion", nothing more.

When I was called in the early 1960's and there were few missionaries, we were individually interviewed by top level GA's. We could have been easily been called by personal inspiration, but were not. Our assignments were already determined PRIOR to our personal interview.

Those having had second language exposure were sent to those missions speaking that language and those having lived in other parts of the U. S. (most of us back then grew up in Mormon country) were sent to those locations. The rest were assigned by the "luck of the draw".

I had previously served in the Air Force in Mississippi so I was naturally called to serve in the Gulf States Mission. Nothing magical about it.

I used to have Mississippi in my territory in the 80's & 90's. Spent a lot of time in Gulfport, Biloxi, Ocean Springs Pascagoula & Bay St. Louis. Before the Casino invasion. Typical Southern Good Ole Boy network. But, great shrimp Po'Boys & Cajun Food. Mary Mahoney's was awesome.

I was there in the late 1950's and the "guf" coast was pretty dead at that time. I usually spent the weekends in New Orleans where there was much more to do - and, of course, the beautiful coeds from Tulane University!

Oh, what great memories.

I used to spend a lot of time in 'Nawlins too. Had season tix to the Saints. Jazz Fest, great dining, etc. My Gulfport customer (5th generation Long Beach, MS) also had percentage ownership in a few Hwy 90 Strip Clubs. Oh boy- free beer & er, perks!

Eyring gave a talk a few years ago about it (can't find the link?) He said something like missionaries names and faces appear up on a screen and the GA moves them around to the places that need a mishi. If they can't seem to decide where to place one they set that mishi aside for a while (a week, a month?) that's why some calls come soon others later.

The Spirit tells the computer where to send them.

to use of computers by Missionary Department. Due to massive
increase of missionaries, computers have assigned Mormons to
their full-time missions since church-wide computerization in
1970. First Presidency has neither oversight nor review of
mission calls. Special committee (LDS bureaucrats and one or
two general authorities) reviews computer print-outs of proposed
missionary calls and occasionally changes some mission
assignments. Signature machine signs church president's name to
letter informing LDS missionaries of their assignments.
Management Systems Corporation is dissolved in 1979, its
functions absorbed by Information Systems Department.
