Will you be the in-house sub, covering all grades, or do you have a long-term position, covering one teacher for however long he or she is out?
In-house sub is a pretty sweet job (I've done it.) Daily subbing is basically glorified babysitting. You give the students the work that the teacher has provided for you. Most teachers will provide work that is review work and that the students can do on their own. If the teacher comes to know you and trust you, s/he may provide opportunities for you to teach as opposed to babysit. But even that is dicey as students will generally not behave as well for you as they will for a regular teacher. The best asset to bring to this job is flexibility, because you will be asked to wear a lot of different hats, often at a moment's notice.
Long-term subbing for one particular teacher is a totally different animal. You get most of the work of the regular classroom teacher at a fraction of the pay. Principals generally give this job to someone that they think highly of. It's good experience if you are seeking a full time teaching job or want to try out a different grade level and/or subject. It pays somewhat better than daily subbing. But it will be demanding.
Good luck. Give me or my fellow teachers on this board a shout-out if you need any help.
I've done subbing too, Cant say I enjoyed day labor. What gets me is the not having a set schedule. If I'm not contracted to be at work then I'm most likely not going to be looking each day at my messages to go in to work for who knows what grade and what subject for what class.
But some do well with the chaos? Let us know how it goes...
The bishop said that was the highest rank I achieved in moronism. He read from a piece of paper 30 years old. That's as far a I slipped (climbed?) as a moron.
Congratulations on your new job! The fact that you had the enthusiasm and cared to announce it on this board shows you will make a great teacher. Good for you! I know teachers are badly needed and under appreciated, and underpaid. How do I know this? 6 months ago I retired after 40 years as a special Ed teacher. God bless!
