Did any of you guys live with your parents even when you were an adult and started working and wanted to buy your own stuff like a laptop?? I want to get a laptop, but my parents would just end up putting restrictions on it again!! And on a side note-as exmormons, do you guys think porn is horrible to watch whenever you had a long day? because I watch it whenever I had a long day and all it does is relieve alot of tension. This is one reason they would be restricting it, but honest to god, I am not addicted to it!!, plus I would be paying for my own netflix account, but they would probably make sure to know my password so that they can log in for me every time I watched something and I would be paying the bill with my own god damn money!!!! why do mormon's think it "ruins lives"? and can they really restrict something that I worked for with my own money? I am still trying to move out, but it honestly boggles my mind that they would do that!!

I agree that your parents actions are not reasonable. But the solution is to move out. As my undergraduate child psychology professor once said, "This is nature's mechanism to get kids out of the house and functioning on their own."

Having (non-Mormon or exmo) roommates is an economical way to live that would give you your freedom. Look into a shared living situation.

Do you pay them any rent while living with them? They might reason that if you can afford a laptop, you can arguably afford some rent as well; and as long as you're living there for free, yes they can restrict you.

Can you possibly strike a deal? You can try to negotiate with them. Agree to pay XXX per month; in return, they keep their hands off your laptop. Paying them money can get you some legal renter's rights, plus they may see you more of an adult (by paying your own way) and less like their child. The bargaining is a useful life skill too.

Once you're out from under their roof, you can poke them in the eye to your heart's content, and let them know how much you like watching "Naughty Asian MILFs #72" or whatever your taste runs to.

If you are:

-Paying rent (fair market value) & other utilities
-paying for your own internet connection
-have your own computer equipment
-the computer is in a room that you pay rent for.
-you never leave the computer unattended without locking the screen or logging off.

Then you should be able to say to your parents that you have the right to maintain your own computer with no intervention.

If they are giving you a break on anything, or if the computer is in a common area then your parents have legitimate reasons to set the rules.
