It is obvious to anyone who has done the research that the Book of Mormon is not an original document. My question is: Why didn't people see that when it first came out? They certainly would have been aware of VH, LW etc.

Many of the ideas found in View of the Hebrews were "common knowledge" when the BoM was published. Many early Mormon converts accepted the BoM *because* of this--it conformed to what they already believed.

As far as The Late War? It was written in the style of the King James Bible, which many readers of the BoM obviously found comforting. Other similarities may simply not have been immediately apparent or widely known at the time.

"Mormonism Unvailed" was published in 1834 by Eber D. Howe. TSCC worked hard to smear Howe and Hurlbut, which apologists do to this day. As if a bruised ego could explain a man's dogged pursuit of uncovering a massive fraud.
