I don't know if I have a motto now, but I'm trying to think of the perfect words to show my free thinking. I like:

"Intolerance of your present creates your future"

or:

"Sometimes the hardest thing and the right thing are the same"

What are some other life mottos?

Live every day as if you will die tomorrow.
Learn every day as if you will live forever.

Always, always, always question authority. (I must give Ben Franklin credit for this but I may have added a couple of extra always) I learned this lesson a bit late in life.

Given that escaping Monmonism becomes less of a big deal as one recovers, and that tattoos are nearly permanent, I have avoided exmo-ish tattoos. I have others, though.

"Do what is right, let the consequence follow"

Yeah, I know that a mormonism, but I have taken it and given it my own meaning now.

Not all those who wander are lost ...

I seriously have considered having that tattooed on my foot. I did get a very small cross on my wrist because being raised Episcopalian, before converting in middle school, I had a number of beautiful cross necklaces my mom forbid me to ever wear again. I saved them and now wear them all the time but getting a tattoo of a cross seemed like giving two middle fingers to silly Mormon rules instead of one.

I love this, and have thought about getting it myself.

I did get a quote by St Augustine in Latin, which translates roughly to "Make me chaste and pure, but not yet."

It means "They sing for joy," and were said to me by an adorable little old guy in Venice.

It was noon on a Sunday, and Mass was just getting out in churches all over the place, and church bells were pealing like I have never heard before, or since. I was overwhelmed in that moment - by the fact that I was actually in Venice (long-time dream), right near the ocean (Californian by birth but landlocked for decades), listening to the scree, scree of the gulls - it was amazing.

This little old guy was looking at me as I marveled, and I could tell that he understood just how awed I felt. I stammered out in Italian, "The bells here - they don't ring, they sing!" He broke into a sunny (and nearly toothless) smile, and said, "Si, signora - cantano per la gioia!"

I loved those words so much that nine years later, I had them tattooed on the inside of my left arm, in UCLA blue. It's not terribly conspicuous, but I don't go to any particular lengths to hide it, either.

I am considering getting a tiny set of one red and one green chile peppers, but TBM DH feels that I ought to be happy with my Italian one, and let it go. After all, at the age of 70, how outrageous does one need to be? The red and green chiles are the emblem of New Mexico, my adopted home for the last three decades or so.
