I've started to proof-read everything on this forum

It doesn't look right ... look it up!

When it's right and I'm not at least I learn stuff but

It's driving me barmy!

I looked up "legitimate" as verb in someone's post and I was in cyberspace or 20 minutes

Barmy, here's a piece of advice for you. proof read your own posts first, then proof read the posts of other people. ;o))

I've looked up a lot of stuff from site over the years to find the facts about a claim. I've learned a few new words too!

Sure, there will be typos and mistakes.

Do you want someone proof-reading your work, making corrections, criticizing, nit picking? My guess? Probably not.
It's the Golden Rule: don't do stuff you don't want done to you!:-)
This is the closest to talking in cyberspace we are going to get. Nobody needs to know how to spell or punctuation to talk! :-)

I do it in my head sometimes, but it's kinda silly to let it bug you. Unless you have perfect grammar and spelling, it's probably best to let others' mistakes slide.

I can't help it. Proof reading is part of my day job, but I tend not to correct spelling, etc., on bulletin boards.

1) It's probably rude.
2) I am not paid to do it! ;o)p)

We are supposed to police each other's behavior. So leave the guy alone! Why aren't you reading the scriptures instead of hassling people? I bet you're not going to the temple each weekend, either.

(And BTW, "to police" appears to be a recognized noun-come-verb. And actually, it's "noun-cum-verb," but the middle word is making people more and more nervous to use.)

It just looks childish even on phone text messages.

Barmy, a word from a fellow proofreading fanatic:

When you frequent an online forum, please take your lead from the folks who have preceded you there. RfM is casual but fairly literate, so don't chip it to bits.

On other forums I visit, folks get ridden out of town on a virtual rail for errors in spelling, grammar, punctuation, and capitalization--and God forbid you use common abbreviations like LOL, FWIW, DS, DD, etc.

It's as if you've worn a tux to a backyard barbecue, and are pissed that everyone else is in cut-offs and tee shirts.

I still haven't figured out how to edit in this new format. I'm guessing you have to be officially logged in first.

As a result, I kind of cringe when I see typos in my own posts. OTOH, minor typos in other people's posts don't bother me. It's a bulletin board after all and we shouldn't expect posts to be at the level of a published book or article in terms of being free of typos and other insignificant errors.

That said, I still hope that the lose/loose loser/looser confusion will get straightened out eventually. I've lost track of how many times I've read someone being described as a "looser," causing me to imagine someone unbuckling the belt on their baggy, out-of-control, oversized pants, only to realize later on that the poster meant to say "loser." ;o)

Barmy, the most infamous of these is "Baby's Named a Bad, Bad Thing." Enter at your peril.

I once argued with a young girl missionary and made her cry.
Her companion said not to worry, it'll toughen her up.

Which is what this post did to me. Did I write that right?
