Mexico at one time was a beacon of growth for Mormonism.  The country was the first outside of the U.S. to have 100 stakes (1983) and then 2,000 congregations (2009).

But ever since Mexico was hailed for having 2,000 congregations, growth as been lackluster.  In fact, growth was negative for three years in a row.

Now Cumorah.com reports that currently there are about 1,987 congregations.  This means that in 2017, the number of congregations declined by 1.4%.

Cumorah.com says the lack of growth is due to "inactivity and local leadership challenges."

Incidentally, Mexico is one of the nations where the census contradicts church membership statistics.  In the year 2000, the church claimed 884,00 members, while the census recorded slightly more than 200,000 people who identified themselves as Mormons.

Gee, internet availability in Mexico has also soared since about 2008.
Coincidence?
I think not. :)

Many Mexicans used to be considered Lamanites. I wonder if loss of status has something to do with loss of interest in TSCC?

I thought they once claimed 1 million members in Mexico.

I guess building more temples there didn't help.

Imagine if ChurchCo could convert all the major cartels - the most opulent temples ever would spring up all over MX!
