Note to all religious types: "shattering physics" does not mean "proving the Bible is right after all". It is a misleading headline. It should say, "may lead to a better understanding of the physical universe".
BTW, I know what's going on. Decepticons are real. All those movies were based on leaked secrets that the Government is trying to hide.
Because, "Hey, we found something interesting we want to study, which might increase our understanding!" doesn't make for nearly as attention-grabbing of a headline.
Scientific American notoriously engages in sensationalizing or overstating the significance of its stories, and placing the selling of magazines [and its survival] ahead of scientific credibility. This problem is compounded by scientists who themselves are motivated to advance their status in the scientific community.
Note the following statement in the article:
"All the explanations were intriguing, and suggested that ANITA might have detected a particle not accounted for in the Standard Model. But none of the explanations demonstrated conclusively that something more ordinary couldn’t have caused the signal at ANITA."
Right. And it is highly likely that this will turn out to be a mundane rather than stupendous event. But, who cares, the story will have accomplished its purpose.
They have been working on the problem for over two years, but when the new evidence surfaced, it has seemed to prove the old theories wrong. If true, then the next step is to figure out what is coming out of the earth and why. If true, then this is a remarkable discovery.
Ah, flying out of Antarctica because they went all the way through the planet from the north pole and they don't understand how the particles didn't hit anything along the way. I get that now, but why are they only coming out that way? Is there a reason they are traveling perpendicular to the plane of the solar system? Or are they coming out every which way but it's just that they're easier to measure in Antarctica?
This sounds like yet another item to put on my physics testimony shelf.
Some of you folks think you had it rough buying into a cult religion and finding out it was fake. I also bought into physics (I have a PhD in Physics) and now I'm finding out it is fake too!
I'm now out on 2 things I chose to follow in my life. :o(

COMMENT: Serious? Comparing your Mormon shelf with a scientific shelf? Please tell me you are being sarcastic. Now, I will readily admit that my scientific shelf is far from empty and it occasionally wobbles, sometimes quite violently, with the weight. But, my religious shelf collapsed and tumbled to the ground long ago.
My faith is religion has taken a total beating, my faith in Physics is now under threat because of this 'Scientific' American article, but my faith in Sarcasm reaches new highs daily.
Keep editing because my skills in typing are reaching new lows daily.

Only thing I don't get is, like, you know, why they stick that useless "c" in the middle of Antarctica. I don't like it. Nobody ever really wanted it there. Earthbutt would be a better name anyway.
