Don't bother fact-checking. You won't find anything about the above historical facts in any official history. The Books of Nitrous Oxide and Helium are safely tucked away in a vault. But their effects are still felt.
The only explanation given for the funniness in official histories will refer you to conventional theories about the goofy temple handshakes, the absurdly obvious horniness of the prophet Joseph Smith and some silly story about translating ancient records using a brown turd-shaped stone that would glow with words. All very funny, no doubt. But not the complete explanation.
If was all fun and games until someone found the Book of SF6 and starting talking like God. The voice turned out to be very handy for influencing church leaders going through the temple.

I didn't want to be guilty of loud laughter. I just wouldn't do it, no matter how hard Satan tempted me. No loud laughter for me. Maybe a loud guffaw now and again, but no loud laughter.
Now I'm trying to think how funny would it be to see a Comedy Central Roast of Russ as the guest of honor with Oaks as the Master of Ceremonies and all the apostles and Wendy ready to take their turn at the podium to crack everyone up with their clever put-downs.
I will believe Mormons are funny people when Lisa Lampanelli plays the Celestial Room.
Everyone else might think they look silly but mormons assume they look Godly and reverent. They strut about and talk in a self important tone even though they're not all that impressive because it's all show.
