A book that once upon a time got a lot of mention here at RfM is Carl Sagan's Demon Haunted World. Though not about Mormonism it is about critical thinking - or rather the lack of - that has caused much of the superstition and ignorance in the world.

This book is easily one of the most influential books i've ever read. It was a big eye opener. I never realized just how UNCRITICAL of a thinker I had been my whole life.

Anyway, thought i'd pass this recommendation along to the new and younger folks who haven't heard of it.

It follows humanity from hunter gatherer to the present day and makes an excellent case for why humans sometimes invent gods and religions.

I agree. It is a must read (at least the first half). The bologna detection discussion and dragon in the garage are classics.
