"Each man is afraid of his neighbor’s disapproval — a thing which, to the general run of the human race, is more dreaded than wolves or death."

Yup, it's one of the fears that keeps Mormonism running.

Mormonism and humanistic thought: never the Twain shall meet.

My motto is, if at first you don't succeed. . .

She struggles, what with the law of averages fighting the law of diminishing returns.

But bless her little pea-picking heart, anyway!

True in Samuel Clemens time but not true today. No one knows or cares about their neighbors much including the ones people know.

And Mormons love to gossip like most insulated excusive groups of humans. If disapproval is even part of being neighbors in beliefs it is more about keeping that to one's self nowadays. Just keep the backbiting and scintillating information flowing.

Yes, true today. People care what other people think: houses, cars, yards, vacations, clothes, suicidal media, (spell check called it that, and I'll just leave it at that), democrats-rebublucans, the Mormon 'church'...

People care, but to different degrees

Images are JUST as important to people now as then. It's just displayed differently. Put simply, people want to be viewed one way, and live how they want. They still want to 'look good'.

The difference is EVERYBODY is your neighbor now. People can experience one another from afar, as if they were close, like neighbors.

And that is so many people spend 15 hours a day on social media seeking validation from others.

On the other hand, there's always Vladimir Putin's way of getting approval if that doesn't work for you.

We’re like lab rats who can’t stop pressing the bar for more shots of dopamine.

And it doesn’t matter that I turn off my phone when I play golf, because a good golf shot does the same thing!

We all love to get high!

I see. Here's hoping your dopamine drought ends soon, then.

I always like that he referred to the BoM as "chloroform in print!"

Often misattributed to George Carlin, but it's really Twain's.
