In my hometown! The girls were going around the neighborhood leaving thank you notes, and were on the sheriff's front porch.

Mormonism in action!

This story is big on the local news on TV where I am in Pocatello.

Geez that guy is a tool.

The sheriff deserves to be in deep doo doo. However, sneaking around somebody's yard in the dark, and running away after ringing the doorbell is not the brightest move in the world either.

What if the resident sees you sneaking around the yard, especially a resident who has received threats of violence, which was the case in this situation? Oh, fer dumb.

“I have had drunk Indians drive down my cul-de-sac. I’ve had drunk Indians come to my door."

Dude, they are Lamanites.

Yeah, but if they weren't criminal Lamanites, they'd be White!

I can understand the confusion in the dark, what with the long hair and talking in a falsetto voice.

Seriously unbelievable that public officials still don't get that they need to learn and move on from racist language and slurs.

Every single time you have to say what the hell is the matter with these people? Clueless, and worse. Much worse.

It's been over a month and the church hasn't been able to bury this yet?

Church must be losing its mormon mojo.

As others have said, I would be jumpy also if strangers were invading my home turf in the middle of the night. The leaders (if any were involved) should learn a lesson from this.

It is probably his doubled authority, MormonØžism gave him the enforcer power of the priesthood, and then his big headed trip got iced like a cake by becoming the county sherrif!

"Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint communication officials Dan Cravens and Ray Matsuura, who said this situation was 'most likely a misunderstanding.'”

Mormon wimps.

I know this incident is so, so serious.

But this comment in the OP's linked article hit my funny bone:

"Around 8 p.m., Rowland [the sheriff] told investigators, he went to let his Yorkie out to use the bathroom."

His doggie needed a bathroom! LOLOLOLOLOLOL

What is totally absolutely nearly completely unbelievable is the sheriff's behaviour: Dragging a woman out of her car and holding a gun to her head, in front of a group of children? His excuse was that he was being harassed lately and he was worried about his safety. An unarmed female and a bunch of kids posed that much of a perceived threat that he reacted so violently? And potentially dangerously? Ripping out her hair, maybe gun going off accidentally? Kids traumatized?

The other distasteful part of the sheriff's overwrought handling of a low-level incident, and surprising, with him being a Mormon, is his repetitive use of foul language, especially in front of kids. How come the Mormon spokesperson quoted in the article said the whole thing was "a misunderstanding"? Minimizing the sheriff's reaction is offensive in and of itself.

From the article: "He continued yelling profanities at the woman and girls and pointed his weapon at the woman."

Too, he said, in his defence, that he thought someone was trying to break into his home which his why he grabbed his gun. But the article states that he heard a knock at the door. Would that be threatening? That's not a break-in attempt on its face. He could always look out and see who was there before opening the door. Kind of a questionable justification.

Too, besides that, at some early point in the proceedings, surely it would have become evident that the kids and their chaperone weren't posing any physical danger to him.

I won't dwell on the fact of him being in his longjohns. I guess he was in a hurry. I don't really get why he was in his underwear if he was just on the point of taking his Yorkie out to the toilet. Surely he'd put on his trousers for that? (I know - that's not the crucial part of the story but my brain went there). I wish it hadn't - really, I do.

He's not a very good mormon anyway. From the charging documents linked above (13j, page7) "Sheriff Rowland told me he had one "alcoholic beverage" at dinner at 5:30pm..."
So much for the WOW.

>I won't dwell on the fact of him being in his longjohns

I wonder... longjohns or garments?

Not to minimize his conduct, but the YW activity was making turkey pictures by tracing their hands and coloring them, and writing thank you on them. That sounds like an activity for first or second graders, not teenagers. More silly activities from mormon leaders.

Re alcohol. Oh, I didn't even think of that. Oops, swearing, drinking. Yikes. Bad example to the kids.

PS: He apparently said longjohns. Would a Mormon go outside in g's?

A Mo wouldn’t normally go outside in garmies, but this is hardly a normal situation. Guys wandering around the house in garmies is not that out of the ordinary, and with a sudden reason to run outside, sure, a resident outside their home in garmies could happen.

"Rowland told investigators he pointed the gun at the woman's head. The woman later identified herself as a neighbor and family friend for over three decades."

Her family should re-evaluate their friend zone. Good thing she didn't reach for her waistband when he pulled her out of the car by her hair.

"Rowland told investigators that he had had a single alcoholic drink that night, but he was clear-headed."

Looks like *someone* has a Word of Wisdom problem! Still, I have to wonder what he's like when he's not "clear-headed"…

I still stick to my original suspicion that this sheriff had his porn session interrupted. Normal folks don't go wandering around the front yard in underwear.

I don’t know where this so called sheriff got his firearms training at but it wasn’t from any of the lawyers and instructors I got mine from.

I don't condone what the sheriff did, but sneaking around in someone's yard, in the middle of the night is not a brilliant idea; especially these days.

One fine summer's evening at 11pm, we heard some strange noises coming from our driveway. Our vehicle was parked outside the garage, the garage being full with our kids' cars.

We peered outside, and there was a truck, an open bed trailer attached to the truck and 2 people outside. They were in the process of trying to steal our car.

We yelled some awe-inspiring threats to them, which served to light some fireworks in their places where the sun don't shine.
They sped out of there, never to be seen again.

Robert Kirby told the story of his friend who was living in Utah county. His friend was up late and also heard some noises out to the side of his house where his brand new truck was parked.
He snuck out and saw 2 men crouched down behind his new truck.
He picked up some good size rocks and proceeded to pelt them in their heads with the rocks. They ran, hollering and yelling down the road.

Satisfied that they were gone, he went and inspected his truck.
The truck was fine. He looked down on the ground. There was a mashed fruit cake with a note attached to it. The note read:"Merry Christmas, from your home teachers".

Anyone delivering a fruitcake deserves to be pelted with stones.

out. When my husband would go to seminars, I'd have night terrors and so when he left, I was a mess. I'd read until I fell asleep. Luckily he had had back surgery not long before he left and left pain pills. Hate to admit it but I took one a night to put me to sleep. There was enough to last a month or 2. I had 3 teenage boys living next door. They made a lot of noise in the middle of the night. I would stay awake all night and sleep when my kids were at school.

I still really LOCK DOWN the house if my "husband" is gone somewhere. He lives downstairs, but it makes me feel more secure. My 36-year-old son lives here and he gets irritated that I am afraid and I said, "I'm still that single mom taking care of her 2 kids." We had some things happen that scared us all pretty bad.

Last night I was working and I could hear knocking on the door and the dogs were barking. I was HOPING they'd leave. I was in my pjs and had washed my hair and it was sticking up all over, but the knocking continued. It was after 8:30. It was JUST a neighbor and she brought treats. Glad to get the treats. Another neighbor brought something at 3 p.m. I think that is the time people should be coming to leave something.

I don't have my doorbell on as I had a dog with a heart condition that died 6-1/2 years ago and I choose not to turn the doorbell back on.

Obviously this sheriff is unhinged, but I wouldn't like it, either. I don't want anyone knocking on my door after dark unless I am expecting them, or there is some sort of emergency. Many times I've already changed into my nightclothes by 7:30 or 8:00 p.m.

I don't get why they felt compelled to knock on his door, or anyone's door, anyway. Weren't they taping the notes to the doors? He would have seen it in due course. Why disturb the peace of his home?
