What legitimate interest does the LDS Church, or any church have in people's private intimate lives? What is the moral rationale for churches to concern themselves with sexual behavior?

Absistence for teenagers might be a good idea, (I don't know!) But what business is it of the Church?

I'm guessing that the original intrusion into that aspect of people's lives might have been a concern for fatherless children whose single mothers were dependent on the church for assistance. But beyond that, what?

What is the church's responsibility and/or business to decide and provide the moral framework of sexual mores.

I think there was a time when birth control was not very reliable, and it was in society's best interest to encourage marriage before sex. But nowadays, while we've retained our puritanical attitudes, it's not like the desire for young people to have sex has magically gone away. I wish that we (meaning the U.S.,) would do a much better job of educating about and providing birth control, but here we are.

It's not about responsibility, it's about control. Abstinence for teenagers, that shipped sailed a long time ago. How about education and not making non-martial sex a reason to judge (usually woman).

We focus about avoiding pregnancy, but nothing mentioned about STDs & the emotional consequences of people not mature enough to act responsibly; those can be harmful too...

Now we know the source of your challenges, EB.

I don't believe that sex Ed prepares children (how young) for emotions until about (varies) 17 18 19 years.

Wise parents can gauge what their children can process maturly & they have more ar stake than teachers.

>> Wise parents can gauge what their children can process maturly & they have more ar stake than teachers.

First, I would like to point out that "teachers" do not make major decisions about what is taught in schools, and *certainly* not for sensitive topics such as sex ed. That is the function of each district's school board and often the state board as well. Any teacher who handles sex ed is going to be highly trusted by administrators, and will have the common sense to stick very closely to the curriculum. And in the school districts which I've attended and taught in, parents need to sign off on their children having access to sex ed. It's all very tightly controlled.

A good sex ed program will cover STDs and the emotional aspect as well.

If I didn't have a very good sex ed program in high school, I wouldn't have had sex ed at all until I got to college. I think that is true for a lot of kids. Many families don't feel comfortable discussing topics like that. IMO ignoring a problem doesn't make it go away. A number of teens are going to have sex no matter what their parents think about it (i.e. the recent Utah court case,) and it's best that they have some knowledge of how to prevent pregnancy and STDs. The knowledge comes in handy even if they decide to wait for marriage.

It's easy for adults to make stupid decisions about sex too. Or alcohol or drugs...

So how much easier is it for youth to be stupid about it? I don't think it's the sex per se but the follow on effects and risks that are potentially life altering. Those risks are different now true.

Has anybody mentioned blackmail?

If you confess to your bishop, he has leverage against you. You don't dare not pay a full tithe, and you don't dare disagree with the old guy because he has secrets about you.

Syphilis was brought to Europe from the New World shortly after Columbus and his crew discovered Lamanites.

The natives traded sex for nails, which became a problem for the integrity of the ship as the crew pulled out the nails.

So much for Lamanites not being enticing.

destructive in my life. I consider what they did emotional rape from age 12 to when I finally got married to get the leaders out of my life as they were destroying me.

I told the story about my older sister telling me that the year she took off from going to church, the bishop called her in and asked her if she had a big sin she needed to repent of and then he brought up porn. If you knew my sister. She's not quite as naive and sheltered as I was, but porn??? She won't even have the internet in her house so her husband and sons wouldn't look at porn. Not like they had either. She still doesn't have it.

She didn't finally leave until this past year or so. Reading Educated was the REAL last straw. She said she saw some of the things they did to me in that book and she was sick.

And again, it is still my fault my gay husband cheated on me to this day. Someone just told me that again very, very recently. Not like we haven't been separated since I was 37 and I'm 66 now.

How on earth is it anybody's business?

I don't recall ever even thinking of discussing another person's sex life with them unless it was relevant in a medical conversation, maybe about birth control methods, but even there I stayed in my own lane.

And who, how, why would anybody even dream about judging you for something deeply personal about which they have no clue?

It's appalling.

Judge not - even the Mormon Bible says that.

ETA: It does, doesn't it? BoM, KJV...

It's 2023, and there are people who still think that you can do something about being gay. Unreal.

Back at the start of the 1960s,
sex was a very, very big deal,
but dry humping wasn't.

Weird, huh?

Now sex and shaking hands are
getting pretty darn close to
having the same weight and
occupying the same space...

"Did you shake his hand?" and
"Did you bump uglies?" carry
close to the same weight in
'modern' America.

How did sex become the business of the Church?

I believe that stable families are crucial- critical aspects of a well-functioning, society and morality is an integral part bc it gives generational continuity.

Continuity is important for individual & social responsibility.

Try listening to criminals attempt to excuse or explain their actions bc of adverse childhoods...Uncaring parents / caregivers, etc.

Why are labor & delivery docs & nurses always checking for drug/alcohol effects of newborns? Because it has become so frequently seen even in the delivery room!

Consenting adults engaging in adultery, that's what the cool kids are into.

Life will find a way and we are examples of the way of life even if the pairing, number of people involved, varieties of so called degradation are not to the goal of procreation.

I've read about how people from more primitive societies account for what American society calls adultery. It's not that they are better just more inn tune I believe with the human condition.

Just thinkING about it.

It's an open door, an invitation to your bedroom, your PERSONAL life, your PRIVACY, your sacred intimacy.

It's a way to PRY, to LEVERAGE, to SPY

Think priesthood, home teaching/ ministering...
Think reports, tithing, bisho prick "interviews"...
Think callings, backbiting, backstabbing, under bussing...

It's simply a way to get into your pants.
Into your head! Into your bed. It's perverted!

It's immoral!

Indeed!

The Church knows/controls your finances, your sexual behavior, your oral consumption, your media usage, your friendship and associations, and your clothing.

Is there anything at all left private?
