Getting this information is difficult.

There is this study from 10 years ago

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/274333450_Mormon_Missionary_Experiences_and_Subsequent_Religiosity_among_Returned_Missionaries_in_Utah

Unfortunately, to see the results you have to request a copy from the author.

It is quoted in this article

https://www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2014/08/young-restless-and-preaching-mormon/378760/

According to this, 40% become inactive while 2% formally resign or are exed.

Certainly, some of the inactive ones return to activity, but some just as certainly will not. More people in general leave LDS, Inc. by just walking away and becoming permanently inactive. I see no reason to believe that would be different for returned missionaries.

According to this, one estimate is 50%

Also see posts by Richard Packham and justarelative in same thread.

From BYU

https://byustudies.byu.edu/article/latter-day-saint-returned-missionaries-in-the-united-states-a-survey-on-religious-activity-and-postmission-adjustment/

"As for public religiosity, 86 percent of the returned missionaries we studied attended sacrament meeting on a weekly basis (see table 6). This is higher than the 78 percent reported by returned missionaries thirty years ago. Both groups of returned missionaries ranged between 74 and 79 percent weekly attendance at Sunday School and priesthood/Relief Society."

So while the exact number is hard to pin down, I would bet that it is much higher than 1% as stated by "John"

“John” is insufferable. He is so quick to invalidate people’s experiences.
