Helena Mars Kimball and the 2nd Article of Faith

2nd AoF: "We believe that man will be punished for his own sins and not for Adam's transgression."

Does the converse not apply as well?

"We believe that man will be blessed for his own good deeds and not for Adam's good deeds."

Joseph Smith explained to Helena Mars Kimball that by marrying him it would ensure her eternal salvation along with that of her family.

Just doesn't make sense. Well...not much does in that system.

This is one incident that has always really bothered me. Besides the theological problems with this, that doing something can ensure Exaltation for someone else, what really bothers me is the emotional manipulation of a young 14 year old girl. How could she say no and deny this reward for her parents? If you read her story you see that she was originally disgusted at the thought.
