Stayed with TBMs over xmas and went to church with them. I 'like' going to church every few years, just to be reminded why I left (not that I need to be reminded).

Anyhow, a reasonably attractive man approached me:

Him - are you here with your husband?
Me - no, I'm staying with friends for xmas
Him - are you single?
Me - yes
Him - how come someone as good looking as you is single?
Me - it's a mystery many have pondered
Him - which ward are you from?
Me - I'm not from a ward, I'm an evil apostate
(At which point my TBM friend, who was finding the conversation highly amusing, interjects with "she's not evil)
Him - no, really, which ward are you from?
Me - yes, really, I'm an apostate. I don't attend any ward
Him - can I have your number
Me - yes, if you want it
Him - what would it take for you to return to church?
Me - well, what would it take for you to leave the church?
Him - I never would
Me (laughing) - funny you should say that, I'd never go back to church
Him - I'm sorry you feel like that about the church
Me - I'm sorry YOU feel like that about the church
Him (patronisingly) - so, you're defensive
Me - that's interesting. I haven't said anything you didn't already say
Him - it's just that i don't think anyone should say anything disrespectful about anyones religion
Me - so, it was ok for you to ask if I'd go back to church, and then say you felt sorry for me about how I felt about the church. But when I reflected the very same things back to you I was being defensive? And not showing respect to your religion?
Him - no reply, just a confused look on his, no longer so smug, face
Me - so, it's ok for you as a mormon, to say what you like? But I can't? You might want to give that some thought before you call
Him - so, someone offended you, that's why you left
Me - no one offended me. I have many mormon friends that I love dearly. Doctrinal issues are why I left.

The conversation ended there. I don't think I'll be hearing from him. Smug git.

Love it! Keep up the great work! It's cool when their superiority complex gets knocked down to size. The question remains though, if he did call would you go on a date with him??!

you rock!!! taking his shit and spitting it back at him. thats the first thing mormons classify someone single or married, member or not. how rude of him to assume something and then ask for your number. Like you would give your number to a stranger. mormons have no boundries!!!!

I love his comment that he does not think people should say disrespectful about anyone's religion. But yet he is disrespectful of apostates and their lack of religion. It has been my experience that people who say such things mean that no one should disrespect their religion. Yet they are generally the first in line to disrespect other people's beliefs. For example, the missionary program is nothing more than giving the big middle finger to every other belief system on the planet.

I worked with a guy several years ago who demanded respect for his particular flavor of myth. When it came to other people's beliefs he was the most condescending, sacrilegious clown ever.

I personally do not think that religions should get any kind of free pass. ALL beliefs and claims should be wide open for discussion and criticism.

Wow. Just Wow.

I am one of those people who always thinks of a fantastic reply or put-down....... 5 minutes after everyone else has moved on and forgotten about it, So I am just in awe of the way you handled that.

I'll second that "Wow!"

I can't believe that you can actually repeat back to him what he's saying, and he doesn't even see that this is what's happening. Instead, he's confused.

That's just amazing, and really rather shocking.

It would not be a surprise to me that you'd be single as a Mormon.

Pretty girl + prettier brain + sharp wit = unnatractive.

Mormonism is bizarro world in many ways.

I hope you find the hot droids you are looking for being an apostate.

"Are you here with your husband?"

Wow... just wow.

I agree with Raptor. You don't fit the breeding cow mold very well. I'm surprised he didn't dust off his shoes in front of you after the beat-down you served him with in his own chapel...

This guys got game!!!! hahahahahahahahah! Move this from church to a bar, and he is one pair of platform shoes, a greasy mustache, and 8 gold chains short of 1970's pickup artist. What a tool.

If he has any redeeming qualities at all, he walked away feeling like a total idiot. If not, he's probably the only one who doesn't know he's an idiot.

Good for you!!!

Props to "the pawn"...for spelling "sacrilegious" correctly! Drives me nuts to always see (and hear) "sacreligious" all the time.

very telling that he was spring loaded to say "you were offended". TBMs can't imagine any other reason (other than sin).

I really think that if we all just used on Mormons the phrases Mormons use on us, we'd have a lot of frustrated, confused members running around the planet. Because Mormons don't tolerate being treated the way they treat others. And yet, when others get mad at members for the way they behave, it's the victims fault for taking offense. They need to be able to see themselves more clearly. Thanks for illustrating that phenomenon so clearly!

I would never be able to think so quickly and cleverly on my feet! That was amazing clairefergie :D
I have zero tolerance for those kinds of games anymore. If that ass-clown had started in with me, I would've skipped the social niceties and without a quick, clever wit at my disposal would most likely have gone straight for the jugular. I guarantee that would've been my last visit at that particular chapel ;)

That was a great read and I admire your quick thinking.

But every time I read this, my brain reads, "Chained up by TBM at church"...

Next time my girlfriend drags me to the mall I'll perform a social experiment in which I walk up to random women and ask them if they're here with their husbands...

Knowing if someone is an active member is way more important as a first step than getting to know them as a person!
