Johnny did something bad and teacher wants to thrash him. His buddy, Bobby, jumps in and says "No, thrash me instead." So teacher thrashes Bobby instead.
Where exactly is the justice in that? If Johnny owed teacher money and Bobby paid, then at least there would be financial justice toward the teacher. But instead it makes teacher (the God figure in the allegory) look like a sadistic bastard out to beat somebody, anybody!
The Atonement: a pecuniary solution applied to a moral problem. It's like some cut themselves and is bleeding so you give them a hug. Nice solution, but for a different problem.
