Being in charge of the voluntary cleaning crew for one month, I was to pretty much make sure it was done and ended up doing whatever was not done myself. This was a December, when nobody wanted to sign up, the most TBMs had done their duty for the year more than once, the jackmos just ignored the sign up sheet and the rest were busy Christmas shopping. I had to clean the chapel on a few December days and I resented it. I was so mad I turned to google for answers. I wanted to find others out there who were as mad as I was. I was tired of hearing the 'we all use the bathrooms', 'it is a privilege to clean', 'if we all pitch in we only have to do it once a year', 'the funds are sacred'. Yeah right, the building was filthy and those of us who cared were putting several hours to clean it. That is on top of all the cleaning up we did after activities, which again was the same people.

Thank you lds cheapos, I would have never found the things I did about the church, had I not been looking for sympathetic ears to my resentment to clean the building and see the custodians retire or let go (I knew two of them personally). Thank you for letting me clean that December, as I did I kept on thinking why would the church be so cheap to let go of the custodians. That thinking led me to google which led me to so much information I never knew existed. This all let me out. Maybe they were the best invested two or three hours of my life. =)

Congratulations on figuring it out and getting out. I share the same belief that this single thing is going to be a straw that breaks the camels back for so many people, because it's beyond the pale.

Happy for you - and glad you had the courage to research and take a stand. Too many lesser people would have just stood there and taken it. Ditto on that Bravo! comment.

If Steve Benson is reading this, I want to know how the Tabernacle cleaning schedule works. How often do the apostles take turns cleaning the chapel floors? We all know Uchtdorf, being one of those weird Germans, probably happily scrubs the toilets. Wait, does the tabernacle have toilets? Anyways, how many times a year do the big 15 have to clean the tabernacle, or that new meeting hall across the street?

Uchtdorf would not be caught dead scrubbing toilets or emptying trash cans.

In fact, i ignored the whole 'clean the church' thing as i felt that tithing money covered cleaning. No way was i going to clean (except after an activity, that makes sense) AND pay money. I had enuf of my brains left intact to see the disgustingness of that idea.

We got out before the cleaning duties began. My ex worked his way through college cleaning an lds church in Rexburg, Idaho, then his dad took over (or they wouldn't have been able to survive).

My TBM daughter has never been asked to clean, for which she is grateful.

My late 70s, early 80s aunt and uncle clean the conference center, the Jordan River temple.

TBM Mormons don't understand, don't appreciate the Irony of their situation.

Actually, no one can "make" anyone clean the chapel.

People just need to learn to say NO loud and clear, without further explanations.

The same goes for working in that godawful church nursery.

If church leaders insist that such work needs to be done by members, they can do it themselves.
Let them come in each week with their own families and jump to it - no one will stop them, lol.

According to my apostate mother, the Nursery was the best calling she ever had in the church. None of the babies ever gave her a guilt trip about what she wore, or insisted that their views on birth control were the only possible right views.

The room did not stink. The children were not running free. I had a program, schedule and happy children (except when a new baby was introduced to nursery)

I could leave the door open and none of the kids would run out.

The kids didn't care what i wore, how 'happy' i looked that day, how high my standing in the ward wasn't.

All they cared about was to play, sing and be cared about.

You will find in any large organization that uses voluntary labor to due any task you will suffer S.T.P. SAME TEN PEOPLE.

We took $150 out of our tithing to pay a lady in our neighborhood, who needed the work, to take our cleaning assignment. It didn't go over well. I'll spare y'all the details but apparently my family's cleaning assignment was intended to "sanctify" us. Thus, we were "encouraged" to take another week. I guess sacrament just isn't enough. Nothing is ever enough. I'm so done...

Are you f-ing kidding me? They were upset because you

a. Helped ease someones burden by offering a hand up, not a hand out

b. respected the church enough to hire a professional, who is probably more knowledgeable about proper cleaning procedures for public restrooms than the average joe mormon.

I was having lots of doubts when this happened, perhaps subconsciously this was an experiment. What I learned is that the cleaning assignment was more about control than about cleaning. My husband and I are absurdly over-educated and they clearly felt the need to "humble" us. Finally I was humbled enough to leave.

"Humble" and "sanctify" in Mormonspeak apparently have come to mean "Bend over and take it and don't you dare ask questions."

And silly, silly me. I even kind of thought it would give our nomo neighbor an opportunity to have non-threatening contact with the church. Her reaction: the building clearly hadn't been cleaned in months, it's too big of a job for a family on the weekend, and her church is never that dirty. I was so embarrassed. Oh well, lessons learned.
