I thought it was funny how they tried to claim it was the gardeners bed, and only a handful of really devout Jeff followers believed it. The rest of the story was just creepy. I wonder if there was anything like this in the old LDS temples back in the day.

The original Nauvoo Temple featured a basement, divided into "hotel-room sized" apartments.
They must have been rather dark, creepy sleeping rooms -- with no windows, and the damp, hot air of western Illinois summers settling in, with no decent ventilation.
I can just imagine "Patriarch" William Smith, leading his newly-married child-bride into one of these "comfort stalls."
Whether the Nauvoo Temple design was copied at Manti, Logan and St. George, I know not. But perhaps the original plan of the Salt Lake Endowment House also included such a basement.
When they spoke about finding the suspicious mattresses in the news, I always imagined old stained mattresses inside a janitorial closet, or a scene that looked like a cheep Mexican brothel (not that I have ever seen one in real life) but this was way more creepy.
Imagine what those poor girls suffered there. I mean, were people watching? Even if it was private, can you imagine getting dressed up to go to the temple to be sealed and walking into that room and seeing that bed?
Remember, FDLS still uses the old school anointings, where women had to be naked in front of men who touched them. They are not only still doing these washings, but they are sending fourteen year old brides through them. That is before the girl goes to this room, for the ceremonial rape.
