Everyone loves to rant about things that bothers them. Often it drowns out what people LIKE. So, here is a quick start to some non-Mormon things in Utah that should be considered when "generalizing" about the state:

Sun Dance Film Festival
Salt Lake City Undie run.
Salt Lake City Zombie walk
Second largest parade in the state is the Gay Pride in Salt Lake
Cyber slut bingo

Feel free to add your own.

It is one of the most un-mormon things to do in Utah! Lots of straight people go and have a great time.

Go with a group of people that are open minded about gays, sex, camp, trailer trash....

Be sure to visit the "meet the sluts" page

Get some friends together that can have some fun with irreverent and sexual humor (yes, it can be politically incorrect) and have some fun. There is a full bar available.

MUSIC!

Mormon churches have only music that is written by Mormons. Their musical group is the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Gladys Knight, and some dweeb BYU and Osmondesque groups.

Therefore...
Any glorious, fantastical, wild music of your choice is Non Mormon!

We get major concerts of all kinds of performers that tour the bigger cities. We get broadway musicals.

--The Utah Symphony, and Opera, and also the ballet.
--The Gina Bachauer piano competition is international.
--The U of Utah music department performances.
--The Shakespeare Festival in Cedar City
--Octoberfest at Snowbird and at Park City
--Ski competitions, ice skating at the oval
--Pac-10 football at the U of Utah
--The Jazz
--Professional soccer
--We accidentally ran into a St. Bernard dog show at The Homestead in Midway. There is also a dogsled competition in Midway. (Mormons are not into pets, as a rule)
--Skiing on Sunday
--Anything you do in Utah on Sunday is a non Mormon thing.

For the people stuck in Happy Valley:

The Holi Festival
Johnson's Bowl
Karaoke at City Limits (so bad, it's awesome)
Yamato
The off-beat music scene

Yamato is tremendous.

The Holi festival is getting a bit out of hand now that the BYU students mob the thing. The temple people have pretty much given up on keeping them out of the flowerbeds.

20-30 minutes from most anywhere and you can be in the wilderness
Dimple Dell on Horses
Little Sahara sand dunes
Cascade Springs with kids
Sundays free of mormons at most stores & cool places >> probably the winner for me :)

Brewvies
Radio from Hell
Cotton Bottom
Lucky 13
Busy Bee
Most sexual positions are against the law and that makes them hotter!

I know that many states have weird sex laws, but I'm proud of our own as well. :)

My BF and I broke the law every time we stayed overnight in Utah?

Yep!
Fornication, a class B misdemeanor, in violation of Title 76, Chapter 7, Section 104, Utah Code Annotated 1953, as amended, in that the defendant, a party to the offense, as an unmarried person, did voluntarily engage in sexual inercourse.

In my 12 years in the DA's office I have never seen it actually charged though...

This is making me jealous. Northwest Florida doesn't have near this level of culture or things to do. Then again, we don't have much population density, and that population we do have is either too poor or too uneducated to pursue fun and leisure outside of the simpler things. They're not bad folks, they just don't have a lot of opportunity to become more then who they are.

At least we have the beach, and very few Mormons.

Don't be jealous
I'd pick Florida any day over Ut. Actually planning on moving there sometime next year!

Don't get me wrong, South and central Florida have the kind of cultural stuff that would blow Utah away. Miami can even hold its own against New York, though they don't have Broadway. I just wish Northwest Florida had a little bit more to offer. Our leaders are taking bold steps to get us there, but we still have a ways to go.

What we really need is a Pride Week, this time every year. The weather is still beautiful, but there are no tourist because school is back in session. It would be the perfect time of year to reach out to a community that traditionally does not have a lot of kids, and turn the city over to them for a few days of fun. I even suggested this to several local business owners. Most think it would be a wonderful idea, but there is no way the community would ever go for it, while a few looked like they wanted to shoot me just for bringing it up.

BTW, I'm straight and a bit of a dork, but even I know you can't have culture without reaching out to all groups.

I didn't realize Utah had an inferiority complex.

Usually the perception of visitors is great scenery and great skiing, but avoid the wacky mormons.

that make Utah great and I haven't been able to think of anything. I like living in Utah--have no problem with it. Is it just because I've been out so long?

I agree--avoid the wacky mormons--otherwise, Utah isn't such a bad place to live.

It isn't that Utah has an inferiority complex, it is that there are a lot of people who dislike the state based on irrational premises. Arguing against them is like shooting fish in a barrel.

That is really what all of these threads are about.
