Mormons and Gays
By Doug Fabrizio
Last week, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints launched a website that explores its position on "same-sex attraction." Some in the LGBT community see it as a baby step in the right direction: it calls for love and compassion, it asks Mormon families to support their LGBT sons and daughters and it invites gays and lesbians to remain in the church as long as they're not "yielding" to their sexuality. Monday, we invite you to react to the website and share what you think it means for Mormons and the LGBT community.

It would appear the LDS Church has come a long ways from the 1970’s and 80’s when shock and vomit therapy was used at BYU to change sexual orientation.

Could the Church see the writing on the wall with the two court cases before the US Supreme Court? If the court rules all states must allow gay marriage, the Churches bigotry brand will shine even more. The profit will be under pressure for a new revelation to change its “Prophetic document” That “Gender is an essential characteristic of individual premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose.”

Thanks for the heads up.
I'll be very curious to see the discussion.

IMHO, the church is just yielding to the ever growing population of tolerant younger mormons. Among people under 35, acceptance of LGBT is incredibly high, and is a huge concern about the church among TBMs. So it's just a race to see if the church changes fast enough, or loses the vast majority of its young blood.

On the program, John Charles Duffy just made an excellent point.

He stated it subtly, so let me state bluntly.

The church has co-opted, for their own purposes, the language gay people use when coming out.

Often coming out is an expression of affirmation for themselves as well as a commitment to furthering the cause of equality for others.

Now, the church allows coming out but now with a commitment to the corporation, not to equality.

Tricky bastards. "See everyone, we're not bigots! Join us (and pay your tithing)."

The conversation has been careful and measured. Certainly critical of the church but handled with kid gloves all the way around. Maybe I'm just too hardcore in my views.

She just told the story of getting married without knowing her husband was gay. He was promised that serving his mission and getting married would cure him. 6 kids later she is telling the church it didn't work. Disservice is the word she used but it sounded like she was saying FU Mormon church.
