In the latest edition of the scriptures it seems they have changed references from, "History of the Church," into, "according to Joseph Smith's History." Anyone have any ideas why they may be stepping away from that work of crap? Sounds like we might be at war with EastAsia again.

Thanks to bubbleboy in another thread for bringing this to our attention.

It's probably psychological. Putting the terms "Joseph Smith" and "history" in one sentence has a soothing effect on the morgbots. History, bad, Joseph Smith good.

"History of the Church" might prompt them to look it up on the internet and we all know that nothing good can come of that!

I don't see it that way.

I think they are phasing out Joseph Smith. A smart way to dump the History of the Church as a "church-approved" doctrine is to call Joseph Smith a partly-failed prophet (thank God you can know that your failings are also acceptable enough for God to forgive your worthless a**)

Several posters over the last few months have shared details of this phasing out process.

The bible is being sent out free instead of the Book of Mormon, according to the TV ads. The BOM is "just a supplement containing a lot of the same information, since the source is the same"-they mean God as the source.

Big switch from the BOM being the most perfect book by a flawed uneducated farmboy and the bible being incorrectly translated.

This turning away from Joseph Smith started when they stopped using his Inspired JS Version of the Bible. It doesn't sell and you know, it's all about what will sell.

In Mormonism, there is only one non-slippery truth. Money. The temple is what keeps people paying and people paying tithing is the cornerstone of Mormonism.

Not the Book of Mormon, not Joseph Smith. They are all expendable just like every Mormon doctrine is. Just look at how the unchanging garment has changed and how the unchangeable temple ceremony has changed.

The very reason for the Restoration was to restore what was changed and they changed it--again and again.

Mark my words - Joseph SMith will end up just a photo of the first prophet in a lineup with other church presidents. They will claim it's because they didn't want him "worshipped."

Yeah, right. He's just a product line that has fallen out of popularity, so we have another correlated product to offer...

You may be unto something, hence their move away from the traditional missionary discussions, into a less formal scripture study with missionaries.

The new, pretty, Christian church. Never mind the black hole of filth swirling underneath you.

Going back into a ward building now is interesting because they all look so utilitarian and corporate.

They feel as if you could easily put up some cubicles and not disturb the ambiance in the slightest.

So, the church can jettison all of its history and you'd end up with what the church truly is now - corporate.

Wow that is plausible.

It gets rid of all the problems that Joseph Smith brings. They're going to go through his history and sort it out into two piles. A keep pile (inspired prophet) and a toss pile(corrupted man). The way they've been doing this with their current batch of clowns for that last couple of decades.

What's been called the martyrdom for 170 years will be rewritten as God removing a corrupted prophet before he leads the church astray.

I guess that's the nice thing about a lie, there's no reason to be faithful to it.

We'll see, I won't get my hopes up just now. Phasing out the weirdness of Mormonism means less distinctive capability means less members. I wouldn't rule out the possibility of further retrenchement. Mainstreaming clearly hasn't worked.

I've said this before and I'll say it again. Yes! They are not saying "I know JS is a prophet" in the recent testies I've heard on F&T day. And at a funeral I recently went to they talked about Jesus and JS was never mentioned (of course maybe that is how it has always been). I have DEFINITELY noticed a huge change. I took note that there is 1 pic of Mormon praying over the stone box before burying it(you know the one). The rest are Jesus pictures. Didn't see Joseph anywhere.

Our ward building is filled with pictures of the Savior. Almost every painting is of the Savior. Do you know how many lessons have been on Jesus Christ? 0. Even Easter, the sacrament meeting talks were talks on abuse.

"Our ward building", you are still in the cult?

Yes, I am unfortunately. For family reasons, I cannot put in my resignation yet. Notice I said yet, I'm working on it. But when I do go, My entire family will be going with me.

And of course being Mormons, instead of dealing with the serious issue of abuse, they got distracted by a desire to try and shoe horn things like watching porn, having unclean thoughts, not reading scriptures, having a strong enough testimony, or being a worthy priesthood holder as being the primary modes of "abusing" your family, while ignoring people who actually beat their relatives or rape children.

I think we're not hearing as much from the apologists lately. DCP seems to have lost favor, and the old FARMS/Maxwell organization seems to be re-defining itself.

The Church may be realizing that they've got a battle on their hands that they are destined to lose.

I think the LDS Church will continue the path of talking less and less about JS to the point eventually of almost making him irrelevant, but I doubt the Church will ever get to the point of calling him a fallen prophet or any such thing any more than the Church has ever admitted that the Book of Abraham is a fraud or ever even responded to all the overwhelming proof that it is such.

I agree. Their own credibility is too tied in with Joe Smiths. The best thing they can do, for themselves, is to shift the focus more and more away from him. Now that I think about it, I bet this was a major reason for the teachings of the Prophets manuals in Priesthood and Relief Society. Now all they have to do is come up with some catchy inspiring hymns based on the story of Heber J. Grant or Harold B. Lee that they can sing on Sunday.

They realize that "History of the Church" is filled with embarrassing facts that lead people (just like me) to realize that the church isn't true. They are avoiding referencing it so no one goes to HC looking for more information on it, only to find a very different history than the one contained in "History of the Church in the Fullness of Times."

I think they take their lead from this board and other areas of criticism. How many times have posters on here commented that the church is all about Joseph Smith (e.g. Merry Smithmas) and not JC. Hey presto, it's being fixed.

They have figured out the secret to maintaining a healthy business is change and adaptability.

Yeah, I often said that you can have more influence on the church as an exmember then as a regular one.

The Church will be forced to admit Smith was a fallen prophet, but state that the Book of Mormon was divinely inspired..

Why does the LDS Church run a billion dollar mall? The LDS Church has billions invested which will keep the church corporation protected under laws for religions, and also insure certain families still have money and power for several decades after the current Profit dies...

The Shakers were an upstate NY Cult that eventually disolved due to their prohibition of sex, even in procreation.

However the last remaining Shaker members, did have a few kids on the side, and established a successful kitchen and dinner-ware business corporaton called Oneida, in that way they took care of themselve's and their offspring when they church folded.

Is this about the BoM, too?

I kind of think a "fallen prophet" may appeal to them. Creates more empathy and iconism.

Check out the discussion on the blog By Common Consent. Much credit belongs to the historians who work on the Smith Papers Project who found B. H. Roberts had modified language in earlier documents "to make them seem more authentic and written in Joseph Smith's own voice." As more of the original sources have become available, Roberts' work has come under increasing scrutiny.

I need to do more research on B.H. Roberts. I always thought of him as one of the "good guys..."
