http://www.lds.org/church/news/new-ldsorg-search-harnesses-power-of-google?cid=HPL2P06W01029&lang=eng

"The new search provides a more safe and Church-specific search experience than Google, said Brother Ward. When you search from Google’s website, the results you get back may or may not be official content, he explained. Some results might be links to members’ personal blogs or even anti-Church sites.

The LDS.org search, however, only returns links to official Church-approved content that is currently available on LDS.org and other Church websites. And even though Google’s technology is used, no user information is provided back to Google. “It provides a safe, private, shock-free environment to search for approved gospel resources,” said Brother Ward."

More Mormon censorship...

Shock-free? What an unusual choice of words. I mean, if the church is completely honest, and the criticisms are all lies, then shouldn't the wording they use be "provides a safe, private, shock-free environment?

The PR guy just admitted there is shocking information out there that can destroy testimonies.

Sounds like what the Scientologists use to keep their members from knowing the truth.

Exactly! I read a book about Scientology awhile back and it talked about how they had software to filter the web from anti-Scientology sources, and I thought, well, at least Mormons don't do that. They're not THAT afraid of criticism that they'll directly filter the Internet. I spoke too soon.

Do they have software that can keep your computer from accessing sites like this one? Seems like some Mormon genius would have thought of a way to do that.

They would need to be an ISP. Maybe that is their next plan. Members use the approved ISP only.

TSCC becomes more like China and North Korea every day. Pretty soon they may as well have just adopted Satan's plan of forcing everyone to comply.

Something the average person doesn't know is that Google sells this capability to corporations.

you pay them a fee and the will do a google search for you that only hits a list of websites you want it to.

"this amazing feat" really is just the church handing google a list of websites and some $$ to make happen.

I was pretty bored during priesthood meeting (yes, I can hear your gasp of surprise) today, so I tried out the new search functionality. If you look up terms such as peep stone and polyandry, the results are pretty anemic. I suppose it supports the ultimate goal of member ignorance, but for those members with a sincere desire to learn the truth who go beyond the tscc search function, it will just highlight the tscc's inability to satisfactorily address controversial topics.

They are attempting to create an intranet vs the internet.

This will be another disaster for them, mostly because they are intentionally being deceptive.

This is a sacrament cup of water being brought to a forest fire.

"It provides a safe, private, shock-free environment "
If I read this anywhere else about an Internet experience, I'd think they were talking about filtering out porn to keep the Internet safe for the kids. Apparently, Mormons now think of criticism in the same category as porn. They can't handle it. They can't trust themselves to say, if something is true, it will stand up to scrutiny, so you don't need to be afraid of reading an opposing view. This is like a kid who suspects Santa isn't real, but wants to believe, not going and checking on Christmas Eve when he hears noises, because he doesn't want to find out for sure that it's only his loving parents ;)

My favorite quote from the article: "First, it would be a waste to spend a lot of time and energy reading it. For one thing, it’s incredibly repetitive. Most of its questions and claims have been brought up—and answered—time and time again for over 100 years."

"That's already been answered."

One of the weakest arguments out there.

".....This latter group is often all too willing to rely on deception and dishonesty to achieve their goals. The literature they produce often uses lies or half-truths; it distorts, sensationalizes, or misinterprets Church teachings and history....."

Er, that's a pretty good description of the TSCC hierarchy.

There are many browsers for Christians that create a closed environment with only approved links appearing in searches.

There are also Christian search engines.
