Having grown up around farm animals, my grand dad always said, "only part of the pig that's not used is the squeal."

The eyesore of neighborhood temples. The sage continues with the church suing the city. https://cowboystatedaily.com/2023/07/19/mormon-church-sues-cody-over-planning-and-zoning-boards-denial-of-temple-plan/

Growing up at my house we'd always just have a light snack for Saturday dinner. Then we'd skip breakfast, go to meetings then have to wait for dad to get home from all his Sunday leadership meetings before we could eat. Sometimes it would be afternoonish, sometimes later to end the fast. One good thing about COVID, the deacons finally quit coming door to door collecting.(or maybe coincidentall

Publicity nightmare for the church. They can't say much because they teach the Holy Ghost and personal revelation BS that all those podcasters were promoting. I am left wondering where all that discernment from the leaders was too. The whole cast of misfits-save Alex, were regularly attending temple sessions. Seems the defense is trying to push everything off on Chad and Alex and that Lori was l

The local Fox news in SLC talked with a lady that recorded said occurrence. Yep, yep, yep, the persecution complex is alive and well. Not verbatim but she said something like, 'No one makes these remarks towards any other persons or religion but Mormons are always free game. And it needs to stop.' Can't say as I agree with the vulgar chant, but **** her.

I agree with your sentiment, Lot's Wife. I feel nothing negative towards the Groberg family. I knew of some of their struggles before and the memorial service was difficult to watch. It did however give me a little more empathy. Wasn't it Dallin Oaks that said recently the church doesn't apologize. Like you botchan, I never had much to do with adults after my first area. My first area had

Enoshima is a great area. Glad you were able to go there the first time at least. Did the members just take you there and your Sr didn't worry about it? No harm no foul? Easier to get forgiveness than permission? Always hated having to get permission to go anywhere. I tried to have the least amount of contact with him and the mission home as possible. It was a bummer that we lived among some

Feels good to talk about it doesn't it asherah? Nagoya is a nice place BTW. Thanks for giving your perspective. Your story fits right in with the overall picture. Provide a place that the investigator feels warm and welcome. Keep the new members close together. (the reason we held church in our apartments) Have them bring their friends. Referrals. Wouldn't surprise me if pizza or other perk

You read on a lot of mission blogs/sites about planting seeds. Treating people nicely and leaving a favorable impression. Not so in the Tokyo South Mission. We were told the field was ripe for harvest and we had to thrust in our sickle. "You aren't here to plant seeds elder. Your here to baptize!" Those that didn't were very much looked down on.

My first month was the only time I ever rode a bike and knocked on doors. Invited into several homes to sit under the kotatsu and feast on azuki beans and mochi while my companion gave the first discussion. Friendly, accommodating, interested Japanese families listening to the foreigners preach Christianity to them. After that it was 2 fanatic foreigners accosting naive students and busy salar

Reading Numano's paper and some other things in this thread reminded me of the "dendo-shos" that we started at that time. Basically the mission and missionaries told the older members and the current ward/branch to get lost. "If your not going to help us we'll do it without you." Established congregations weren't fellowshipping and very welcoming the new members. It was though

Yes, thank you for posting Numano's research. I had seen bits and pieces quoted before but never the whole paper with footnotes. Very informative. I'm thinking that we were about 5-8mo apart in Japan, botchan. Groberg was there when I arrived and still there when I left. I was pretty much squarely in the middle of his term.

For Lot's Wife, where do I send remittance for your counseling services? Your insight has been beneficial to me. I only wish that I could tell more of the story as eloquently as you do. My wife(RIP)was the English major not me. The elder that sobbed his whole flight home...I understand. I can't remember the flight at all. I remember a few hours layover in SF before connecting to SLC and the

Don't know how to start this story and I can see it 2 different ways now. I went on a split once with an elder that I got along with. He wasn't a VIP member in Grobergs club but probably had more connection with him than I did. He was from Idaho so that probably pulled some weight. Anyway, we did something that wasn't kosher with being a missionary. I won't say what, but it wasn't really that

I can relate to the network of missionaries that just tried to stay busy and not be among the Groberg minions. No doubt that we would know each other. We probably even had lunch together on conference days if we were ever in the same zone. Can relate to not talking about my mission too. I never tell anyone. IRL, I think I've only talked about it seriously to my sister. She was talking about he

Snow Country? By Kawabata? The train station where this novel unfolded has a display of the main love interest. Also inside the station is a nice place to sample sake from the region. 500 yen and you get 5 tokens that you can use in the vending machines. Around 100 different types to sample. Get a hotel close to the station. Ahaha https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NxNRvfMihI0

For botchan and Lot's Wife Undoubtedly we know some of the same people. Birds of a feather flock together or something like that. You learned quickly which elders you had to watch your words or actions around and were the ladder climbers. We had so many conferences, pass off conferences, special conferences, mission conferences, zone conferences, batsu conferences, that we for sure crossed p

Nice little article that sums up a lot of people's experiences. They lady went through more than most but still like many has found happiness after she left the church. Was wondering if anyone has read her book, Loose Cannons? https://www.today.com/today/amp/rcna31702

Yes. That's where I did my sentence. Groberg was the only Prez that I knew. Worst 2yrs of my life. (Guess I can't say that. I enjoy Japan) One of his daughters mentioned in her tribute speech that Dee had spent the last 15yrs living in Cambodia. She was thankful that he returned to the states to face some of his "demons" before he died but she never felt that he was remorseful or made

Well, curiosity got me and I had to check the service out. You can watch a recording of it if your curious too. The service wasn't at an LDS chapel. Seems there have been some very tough times in the family relationships. My heart goes out to them. The children all tried to say something positive but they all also mentioned a lot of shortcomings that he has to answer for. Half of them didn't end

Time...... Time wasted not being a normal, healthy, developing person. Time wasted at the prime of life not being able to experience normal sexual relationships. 2years of being told to not even think of the opposite sex when your hormones are flowing at their prime. I can make more money as I go, but I can never turn back time and recover my youth. George Bernard Shaw, "Youth is wa

Couldn't help but see the parallel of Hoffman and ol' Joe at the start a episode 3. He learned that deceptive behavior and how to use it to his advantage at an early age. Fooling people was an ego builder for him. Treasure hunting with his neighborhood friends when he was a kid and digging up a jar of coins he previously placed. He loved to trick people just like Joe. I imagine tbm's won't se
