I just read Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. I had heard some vague references to Ghost Dancers before, but I knew nothing about Wovoka, the Piute Messiah. In reading about him, there were some references to beliefs that he held that sounded like he might have been influenced in some way by Mormonism. Being the good ex-Mormon that I am I googled, Mormons and Ghost Dancers and got a reference to a bo

I should probably add that I had read the quote by B H Roberts from October 1907 where he states that 50+ died during the Missouri persecutions. I just think it's odd that a church that claims that they were severely persecuted doesn't have a list of those who died for the faith. Where is the list of martyrs? I'm surprised that none of the historians have compiled a list of the fallen. I have

Yesterday I got into another argument about Mountain Meadows. Even when I was a believing Mormon, I did not believe that past persecution of Mormons was justification for the slaughter at Mountain Meadows. I have relatives who disagree and just keep harping about the persecution and Hauns Mill and the thousands of men, women and children who died because they were persecuted by mobs. The early

I said I'd return and report, so here is my report. Let me just say before I begin that I can tell that most of you don't live in Utah. You were all so kind and helpful and even concerned about my health that I know you would have warned me about shopping at the liquor store the day before New Years Eve, if you had known what I was about to encounter. Most of you probably have a favorite shop whe

I think you should leave all references to religion out of the conversation. You should tell your sister-in-law that you are raising your daughter to be a strong, independant woman and the fairytale imagery isn't helpful.

Thank you for all of your suggestions. I'm off to the liquor store to purchase my first bottle or box of wine. I purchased a bottle of vodka last Christmas. I still have most of the bottle, does vodka have a shelf life? It was my first time in a liquor store. It was pretty amazing. DSW with booze instead of shoes. I will return and report.

I won't be sipping red wine and watching that movie. I love Jack Nicholson, but The Shining freaks me out.

I think they're terrified. Even the elect shall fall and they are the elect and many of them can't help but think that the new policy is cruel to little children, so they are at risk. They have felt doubt and are doubling down to counteract the doubt. When I was in their shoes, first I found historical problems and I told myself, but the church does so much good. Then I found doctrinal problem

I love the Neil Diamond song and the UB40 cover, but they don't help with the problem I have. I'm sixty eight years old and I didn't leave the church until I was sixty five. It seemed a little old to start changing my lifestyle, so I haven't done much drinking. This year, I was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes. I have it under control, have lost about thirty five pounds and I feel fine. I've been

I threw my Triple away and kept my Bible. I was trying to hold on the Jesus at the time. I actually wish that I had kept the Triple. Sometimes I ask myself, how I believed certain things, and I wish I could see my notes and markings. It might give me insight into my old self. Then again, maybe it doesn't matter what I thought back then, I don't believe it now. I had a problem with the idea of

Apparently ridicule is not allowed even if no names or political affiliations are mentioned. In some states (which will also remain nameless) there is a very fine line between politics and religion. Good luck with your new law. I wonder, will it apply to Ex-Mormons.

Some of the memories are so vivid you can almost smell and taste them. I remember cooking breakfast in the tiny kitchen of my newlywed apartment. I was frying bacon and eggs, and had poured the orange juice from the carton into the yellow juice pitcher. The juice pitcher had matching glasses. The plates were white Melmac with pink and yellow flowers. It's 6:30 A.M., my ride to work will pick m

Oh and by the way, don't expect us to tell you in advance when we plan to discriminate. We will do so on a case by case basis. When we do, we'll try to keep it quiet. The Salt Lake Tribune might spill the beans (unless we can shut them down) and of course Huff Post and the NYT might carry a story or two, what else can you expect from the liberal media.

Why such anger after all these years. Vietnam was an ugly scar on the lives of most of us 60s kids. I didn't know anyone who burned their draft card, but I knew three guys who came home wounded and three more who didn't come home alive. Then there were the guys who didn't come home at all. I worked with a bunch of hawks who had done military service during the lull between Korea and Vietnam and d

I don't think they disagree on this issue. Today Oakes said that parents shouldn't kick their kids out because they come out of the closet. Then he went on to say that parents shouldn't accept everything that their kids do. In other words, Hate the sin but love the sinner. They all consider gay sex a sin. I think they would all counsel parents that to allow a gay couple to share the same room

They were asked a similar question and Oakes refused to answer the question. It was about a Bed and Breakfast owner, but the scenario is very similar.

Which is why TSCC wants wording in the law that specifically allows exceptions based on religious beliefs. They do not want member of the LGBT community to be given the same rights as other classes.

I was part of that survey as well. My opinion must not have mattered much, because they didn't choose the style I chose. I'm short, so I didn't mind the bottoms (if you have to wear Gs) but the top was sweaty and gross. I wore cotton tops and spandex bottoms. I was sixty five years old before I owned a colored bra. That's just sad.

My stake usually schedules Stake Conference on Super Bowl Sunday. That way everyone can be home in time for kick off. I don't know if that's the case this year, because I'm no longer a member.

The shirt of shame is a T shirt that is kept in the office for modesty offenders to wear over their own shirt. At my granddaughters high school it's just a shirt with the school name and mascot. The shame comes from the fact that nobody wears that shirt to school on a regular school day, and it probably doesn't match the rest of your outfit. In other words, everyone knows why you're wearing the s

Did you notice that the actions that he did not request an apology for were a direct result of the church's involvement in prop eight? I think he's still a little angry about it. He didn't want an apology, because then he would have to forgive.

I spent the weekend posting about this on Facebook. My friends, even the ones who are TBM, liked my post. I dug out my old yearbooks 1963, 1964, 1965. About one third of the girls in the dance pictures would not have passed the three finger rule. In the 1965 year book the Junior Prom picture only had one girl who would have passed. I attended a high school in the Salt Lake Valley. The dresses we

The fact that there is no evidence of legislators being punished by the church because they voted wrong is only true because the legislators cave to the threat that they will be punished and therefore always vote the way they're told to vote.
