Who is monitoring this board? When I make a comment about why I oppose the words, "dummies" and "dummoids" when referring to school children, my post is immediately removed. I don't understand???

Wow. You defend Catnip for using "dummies" and "dummoids" to describe students in her class who she decided were not as bright as she was but call me on using "slow learners." I was actually trying to use an unoffensive term. It seems there are posters who will stick together and defend each other no matter what. If you're not one of them, look out.

congratulations! You just made your point without calling the slower learners in your class "dummies" and "dummoids." It wasn't that difficult, was it?

Yes, you have every right to be frustrated, although it sounds like it happened many years ago... I still don't understand why you had to label the students you perceived to be not as bright as you as "dummies and dummoids." You're right, there is a lot of back and forth on this topic. I hope it will help posters think before describing groups of people using labels that might be hu

Really? So is it okay to refer to African Americans, the LGBT community and others using derogatory words from the past that are now considered inappropriate and offensive? Referring to slow learners or others who don't do well in school as "dummies," even though that word, along with "retard," is no longer acceptable, is not okay and should not be accepted on this forum.

Why vent at all on a forum about recovering from Mormonism about being frustrated in school because some of the students were "dummies" and "dummoids." Why is this forum the only place a person feels comfortable to vent about such a thing? A question for you, Amyjo, if your child was doing poorly in school, would you be OK with your teacher labeling him/her a dummy or a du

Amyjo, there were some who took offense but for some reason, some of those posts were removed. Here is the sentence where Catnip used the word "dummoid": "I can remember getting in trouble for telling the teacher, "You already talked about that, last Thursday." And other kids would chime in, "Yeah, you did. Let's move along." And of course, the poor teache

Would you call a child to his/her face a "dummie" or "dummoid" if they had low grades on their report card? There are many reasons that some students do not do as well as others. Calling them "dummies" will not help them but will most certainly hurt.

Catnip just posted the topic: "Did you hate school as a kid?" She then proceeded to describe how "dummies" and "dummoids" held up the her class and it was frustrating for her. I understand that sometimes posters become overly passionate and emotional when describing their experiences in the Mormon church and aren't always careful with the adjectives they use. This

I think JS just wanted to distinguish his church from other churches by inventing the Native American/Jesus in America angle. People who settled on the east coast of North America in the early 1800s, or who had parents who settled in the 1700s, heard stories about and also encountered the indigenous peoples who populated the area. I think people were very intrigued with the origins of the indigen

Exactly! "The church" takes credit for everything good. I haven't attended general conference in a long time, but I don't recall one of the 15 big wigs ever thanking the members for their tithing donations or hours of service that make the church corporation possible. Even the 15 talk about "the church" like it's something the members need to send money to. Crazy.

Interesting observation. I wonder why the members feel a need to disconnect from their church. Doesn't say much about a church when its members feel disconnected from it.

Correlation was church headquarters way of being completely in control and happened partly because of the free-thinking University ward I belonged to in California. Sunday school teachers were professors and others who were very educated. Lessons were creative and lively, and I frequently heard members joking that church headquarters wasn't pleased with the free thinking and fun we had. They were

To those of you blaming correlation: I can tell you that the brainwashing definitely existed before correlation. Maybe it's more apparent to me because I am not BIC and remember my brain before I joined the church (before correlation) and my brain shortly after I was baptized as a child. When you're BIC you grew up being brainwashed and didn't notice it. I joined the Mormon church in the 70s (

Why do LDS church members refer to "the church" like it is an entity that is separate from them? My FB friend just posted one of those promotional ads from LDS Inc. with a picture of boxes of food being shipped to hurricane victims in Texas. My friend commented about how generous "the church" was. I wanted to scream: "YOUR tithing money made it possible, not "the

I was raised in the Catholic church but my family only went to church on Christmas and Easter. I was forced by my grandmother to go to confession once but it wasn't that bad because the confession booth was dark and I didn't have to look at the priest's face. I don't remember the Priest or Father calling my home and setting up an interview with my parents. I do remember my mom and dad trying to f

I've read many of your posts about your marriage. I'm glad you wrote a letter to your bishop, letting him know the harm his meddling and poor advise caused in your life. I hope you get a response.

I think you are right. The Mormon church preaches "free agency," but they're all about control and dependence. They want the members to become attached and needy which is why the interviews start when they are young and can be conditioned to think that the only way to be forgiven is to confess all to the bishop. The more they meet with the bishop the more dependent they become.

Why is the Mormon church so keen on interviewing its members? Is it just a control tactic like everything else? I was a convert at the age of 12 and had my first "birthday" interview with the bishop when I was 13. My parents never sat down with me and asked me personal questions, especially about morality - if I had clean thoughts, etc. They pretty much just ignored me. So when the b

Unbelievable that his parents would ditch him in the desert like that. The mom is truly evil! I think the dad is puss_ whipped. Years ago, when I was a terrible brat on a road trip, crammed in a small two door car with my mom and five siblings and fighting with my sister, my mom pulled over and told me to GET OUT! She was just trying to scare me, but I was a headstrong eight year old child an

Lying to Nazis to protect the Jews, which was punishable by death, is hardly akin to lying for a temple recommend, where there are no consequences except for having to sit through a temple session and live with yourself for being a lying coward who can't be honest with your children.

What makes you so sure that no one in your family knows you've resigned? Don't you think your bishop might have tipped them off? Isn't it likely that your parents suspect you've resigned if you're married to a nevermo and your kids aren't Mormon? If your kids are grown and not Mormon, why on earth would you lie to get a temple recommend? It doesn't add up. Also, If your inactive parents told y

Years ago, when I was still active in the LDS church, I "repented" of very silly and embarrassing things that I thought deemed me unworthy for a temple recommend. I was so TBM that even a stray thought made me feel unworthy. I basically humiliated myself to support my brother on his special day. Although I love my brother, I very much regret what I put myself through for him. The Mo

LOL! I'm going through a very difficult time right now and my TBM brother told me that he'll put my name on the temple prayer roll. Yea - that'll be a big help. Scary thing is that if my life does turn around, he'll stand up in testimony meeting and tell everyone that his sister was struggling, but after putting her name on the temple prayer roll, Heavenly Father blessed her with a good job. The

I don't begrudge anyone wealth and prosperity as long as it is acquired honestly, and I actually enjoy seeing posts of splendid vacations. What irks me is people trying to be humble by attributing their good fortune to blessings as it implies that God favors them - that's what bugs me. They must be super good and righteous for God to shower them with blessings. For some reason God chose not to bl

"We're so blessed." Is anyone else bothered by this remark? It makes my blood boil whenever I hear it or read it in a social media post. Mormons say it a lot. A blessing, according to the dictionary is a favor or gift bestowed by God. So when people say they are "blessed" they're implying that God favors them. I have a TBM Facebook friend who is incredibly fortunate. He

Why should we speak out? Maybe he loved being a missionary. Maybe he didn't. Who knows. I served a mission in Europe that was very difficult and very damaging to my mental health. During the endless days of tracting from morning till night (often past 9 PM) I thought I was serving the Lord. I went willingly, worked very hard, and my friends and family were very proud of me. When I returned ho

It is curious and incredible that matter floating around in space eventually came together to produce an enormous explosion (big bang) and eventually a life sustaining planet that was at one time mostly composed of molten rock, somehow producing single celled life that eventually evolved into humans who marvel at the whole process and question the existence of God. It is truly remarkable, whether
