To echo what others have said, this sort of casual racism can't be ascribed to just one area of the country. It's everywhere. I went to high school in a suburb of Tacoma, WA, where multiple cars in the student lot proudly wore confederate flags. And my grandparents lived a mile down the road from the Aryan Nations compound before they were booted from Idaho.

Seminaries & Institutes is a division under CES, like the universities and colleges. (My dad was an S&I administrator). One of the seventies gave a talk at Education Week this year calling S&I the "spiritual anchor" of CES.

Attila the Hun, Genghis Khan--they're the same guy, right? Right? Notice the divine fallacy in there as well: our inner sense of right and wrong can only have come from a god. Followed immediately by an argument that "atheists think their values just magically appeared." I couldn't make this stuff up if I was deliberately writing a caricature.

Yes, there have always been problems. No, they are not the same as problems today and just because we have solved problems in the past doesn't mean we can/will solve problems today. Two reasons for this: one, because

I remember Sunday School teachers waxing on about the imminent trek to Missouri all the time. Maybe the leaders wised up that they can't keep harping on it because when Jesus doesn't show up year after year it loses any sense of immediacy. I, for one, would love to see ChurchCo announce in General Conference that everyone needs to pack up, buy a handcart, and head out with their 6 months of wh

After the "big" announcement this week, I stand by this even more. AP blows open the church's covering up child sex abuse, and the leaders' immediate response to members is, "Make sure you keep giving us money!"

I found one true passage! Here, I *asterisked* the true parts: Alma 36:5-8 5 Now, behold, I say unto you, if I had not been born of God *I* should not have known these things; but God has, by the mouth of his holy angel, *MADE* these things known unto me, not of any worthiness of myself; 6 For I went about with the sons of Mosiah, seeking to destroy the church of God; but behold, God sent

My great-great-grandfather claimed to have had a dream wherein Jesus came to him to ask him where all his brothers were. After he answered, he claimed, Jesus said, "I want all of you, but especially your brother Brigham." The rest is history, as they say.

They aren't going to come out and be honest; they aren't going to give a crap about anything except protecting the reputation of the church (and their reputation will continue to suffer because of it); they aren't going to stop preaching tithing and the "truth" of the church and slavish obedience to them as the only path to heaven. It isn't because they actually believe these things.

"We have been mischaracterized since 1830, when the church was established." This really stands out as emblematic of the Mormon mindset. This person believes fully in the sanitized version of history they have been sold their whole life (probably) by the church. They simply cannot grasp that the rest of the world might see the church and its history MORE accurately than Gospel Doctri

I have some other questions that are just as--if not more--pressing and historically informed: According to the Old Testament, Eglon was so fat that a knife plunged into his stomach was buried completely. Is it possible that God invented Twix so that Eglon could get so large and then took them from the Earth because of Israel's wickedness? According to the Old Testament, Eve was seduced by

When I was growing up, the argument among Mormon cognoscenti like my father (a Nibley devotee) was that the Earth was "reorganized" not "created." Dinosaurs et al roamed planets somewhere out there in the vastness of space before that matter was used to put together our Earth. (This argument was based on something JS or BY said at some point IIRC). Thus it all becomes just

It might be a generational thing. My grandparents always had Pepsi and playing cards at home. My parents were strictly anti-caffeine and anti-card games.

Haha, my username is what was printed on my nametag (Italy Milan Mission--"anziano" is "elder"). I sometimes called myself "Anziano Giovane." Growing up, there was another family in our ward named Young, but their history was German. "Jung" became "Young" when their great-grandparents emigrated to the US.

I'm so sorry, Tyson. I lost my mom just over a year ago; like you, I wasn't there when she died. I had been there a few days earlier with the rest of my siblings--the last time we were all together as a family--and I had purchased a ticket to fly back April 5. She left the day before, Easter Sunday, April 4. I was a day too late. I've experienced some of the same things you mentioned: inabilit
