When I was a missionary in Taiwan (late 90s), the name translated (from Mandarin Chinese) to "Jesus Christ Apocalypse Saints Church". What's more, the Book of Mormon was a homophone with "Script of the Demon Gate" with "Demon Gate Church" as the nickname (Mormon Church). I worked in the mission office and saw a survey the area presidency had sent the mission presi

Most people in Indiana don't know any Mormons. Plus it has low cost of living and good schools.

Dunno if there's something particularly egregious about the people in question that wasn't mentioned in the OP, but if it was me, I'd be nice and test the waters to see if it's time to rebuild a relationship with extended family.

You're unlikely to be excommunicated. That's a tool usually reserved for people who fear the institution's authority or to discredit popular people who don't tow the party line.

It's worse than that. True that they pay big money to PR firms to generate Holy Ghost feelings. But TCoJCoLDS is the one that sells HeartSell(TM). It's a trademark of Bonneville, which is wholly owned by LDS Inc.

I disagree about what you assert are the messages of Dehlin and NOMs. Dehlin supports doing whatever works for you, whether that be in LDS Inc or out. Sounds much more live and let live than what I hear from your message. But maybe I'm also one of those dimwits who lacks reading comprehension. As for NOMs, you might have a change of perspective from reading some of the posts on the NOM forum.

Interesting. If I lived closer to a temple I'd drop by. My recommend expires in February next year and I won't be renewing it. (If anyone needs to borrow it to attend an important wedding or something, give me a holler.)

When my dad was stake president, he receive counsel from the esteemed brethren to do this. Thankfully, Dad stopped short of directly asking, but he conducted monthly interviews as instructed and explained the evils of masturbation.

The bishop of one Fishers (Indy suburb) ward last spring encouraged members to fast and pray for new move-ins. They had a few over the summer - a festivus miracle! - but it indicates to me that there is a problem. (At least one of those new move-ins were from the other Fishers ward. Tug-o-war of piety.)

That's awesome. I'd feign a stink over it being undone because the you had felt the connection to your new spouse and knew that the sealing had been sealed by the holy spirit of promise.

Fascinating insights and questions raised here. The two arguments for ethical behavior that most resonate with me currently are, first, behave in ways that benefit society in general because that benefits me, too. The second is closely related and perhaps fundamentally the same: there are some behaviors (cheating on my wife, for example) that, for some reason I don't fully understand, would not s

Thank you for sharing such a personal matter, Perky. It conjures up tender feelings, for sure. I'm glad the funeral went well. Good of you to let slide the preachy bishop for your mom's sake; surely it was helpful to her to have that Mormon element present in the service. Warm regards.

Barring some forbidding circumstance, I think talking about it, especially before it's imminent, is helpful. My father-in-law has three daughters who have three different religions (born-again evangelical, Mormon, and Taoist). He's non-religious and his wife was Buddhist. I wish they would work out with their dad now while he's healthy how to handle his funeral. Instead, it's treated as taboo and

When I expressed my disaffection from LDS Inc to my parents, my mom promised to fast every Sunday until I found my way back to the one true church. From my viewpoint, it's a sad thing to see. I don't know if she's still doing that or not, but it wouldn't surprise me. I wouldn't say anything about it besides thanking her for her concern. In her mind, she is showing that she loves and cares abou

Original Sin - like jbstyle said - is very good. A lot of ciders in America have sweeteners such as apple juice and flavors added to it. Orignial Sin is real cider without the added stuff. It's 6% alcohol and goes down real smooth. It's hard to find good ciders in Merh'ca. I also want to try perry, but that's even more rare. Usually liquor shop workers don't even know what I'm talking about wh

Good suggestion. I posted episode one of that on facebook with the declaration that if any of my kids thought they wanted to serve missions, this would be required viewing.

Fuck! Wife is spending my money to make my kids watch an infomercial for a cult I hate. She told me last night they were going with some friends. She was surprised to find out not only that I already knew about the movie, but that it was made by LDS Inc. She only knew that church leaders had been encouraging people to go. She didn't know it was because they need ticket sales to recoup produ

Interesting. The LDS churchgoers where I live continue to be friendly, if sometimes awkward. I've even ran into some a couple times when I had a case of beer in hand - no big deal to either party.

My grandma coerced my mom to promise to burn her journals after she died. Mom complied. I wish she hadn't. I wouldn't have judged grandma. I sure would like some answers, though. I have some material in my journal that is very embarrassing. Some of it is in the vein of a young LDS warrior set on becoming a GA. Some of it is a complete ignoramus griping about his wife. I'll leave em. If my gran

Two or three new versions of the video. They still show the old ones, too. I think the idea is to mix it up to try and keep people awake. Good luck. I watched the first of the recent new versions. It had some great scenery shots of southern Utah. The over-the-top acting and HeartSell music score was obnoxious. Here's my review from a different forum several months ago: "Corbin Allre

Good advice here. I have nothing new, but in my own words, not being local does indeed put you at a disadvantage. On the other hand, it can still be done. All of my job changes, and I've had plenty, have involved a move - California to Indiana to Colorado to Tennessee to Utah to Indiana. In two of those, I moved before I landed a job. With the other four, I was hired first. My gaps between emp

When I was seventeen, me and another buddy went through a phase of visiting other churches. We weren't wavering in our commitment to LDS Inc; we were just interested in learning what others believed. We still attended some or all of the LDS meetings. My parents were and are strictly orthodox LDS. Dad was stake el presidente at the time. I sensed a little bit of concern from them, but they didn

That's both sad and funny. I posted the OP in a drunken display of how I really felt. If you wanna re-use it, feel free. I'm a fan of the idea that creativity is not originality. Rather, creativity is re-use of unoriginal material in interesting ways. (For example, when Jehovah used rocks that had dinosaur fossils in them to create earth six thousand years ago.) I intended it as a mock pray
