I was satisfied to just be a non-attending member until the thing with kids of gay parents. When that happened, I just thought it was so mean that I didn’t want my name on their membership roles anymore. I must say that it felt fantastic to finally make a clean and complete break. And they have totally respected my request to not be proselyted officially or unofficially. The people in the Wa

Whoa! I’ve been out of the LDS church for decades, but it just now occurred to me that I COULD have simply not paid tithing, and I COULD have just said “no thank you” to a tithing settlement meeting. What a thought! What would have happened? I have no idea. But at the time, I thought they were the boss. I did what I was told. Appears they’ve managed quite well without my financial

I read all that LW wrote above, pondered it a moment, then wondered, “Why do my legs literally feel warm even though it’s only a fake fireplace on my TV?” Merry Christmas All! Or a Belated Bah Humbug Day, whichever!

I'm so sorry for your troubles. I can not answer as to exmo support groups. I'm sure others can help with that. But perhaps in addition to that, maybe some sort of body or spirit-lifting activity might help too. A yoga class, art class, something that brings health or beauty into your life. Many communities offer low cost or free classes.

I don't EVER think of it as having "lost faith" in the Mormon religion, although I guess that is NOT technically incorrect. But I guess I just always think of it as something FOUND rather than something LOST. When I finally allowed myself to study and look around outside of the Mormon bubble, I FOUND my own real self. I found faith in MYSELF and my ability to choose and discer

Well, well, I bet they look extremely respectable when they come to church dressed in their designer Sunday best. Probably earns them the top power positions in their wards too.

Wow! I had NO idea! Even demanding payment for the month not served. Geeeez. I guess if the widow doesn't pay that mite, they'll come after her for it.

And don't they tell penniless members that they are supposed to try to get money from their relatives before appealing to the church? I could be remembering wrong but thought I remembered something to that effect.

I love the part near the end where they say "Yes, the church saves and invests its surplus pennies..." surplus PENNIES!??? Guess they've got about 10 Trillion surplus pennies now, just in that one entity. But how cheesy and misleading!

I fear you may be right to not get too excited. I know I read somewhere that the IRS supposedly didn't have enough budget to go after wealthy people. And it's very risky for politicians to go after churches. So will anything actually be done? Still, it would be nice to see TSCC have to be ACCOUNTABLE for once.

One thing I never hear talked about is what was in Jesus's portfolio when he died. As a perfect being, he must have been excellent at saving up tithes and investing well, thus ensuring the financial well being of his family and followers upon his death.

Thank you! Well, well. We were TOTALLY taught that we'd become Gods and create our own worlds when I was in the LDS Church. I feel like *I* AM A TIME CAPSULE.

Wait! I just got back to RFM, so I've been REALLY out of touch with what's going on in Mormonism - and are you saying they are no longer teaching that you can become gods and create worlds?

I sooo relate to this. Much prayer, and I was as sincere as I could be and didn't ask for any great revelation or anything. But I got nothing. Nothing. Not even a lukewarm spark. Just a girl and her thoughts. That was at the end of my college years, and was the beginning of me starting to think on my OWN about what I actually did and did not believe.

Our matter and energy belonged to other animals, people, veggies before us and will belong to something else after us. So I don't see our existence as a benevolent gift but just part of an ever-morphing diverse flow of energy and matter. errrr, something like that.

My thinking is that maybe it's all about creation and diversity. That there's a driving need for new creations and new experiences. Okay, and then I really go off from there. And it's just musings, not a firm belief. But I'm thinking maybe we are all just extensions of a single entity that hungers for diverse experiences, feelings, sensations. Like endless nerve endings all sending in sensati

Being the only church with a living mouthpiece of God probably worked better when they all lived out in the desert separately and remotely. You need to be able to control the message totally so you don't have to contend with conflicting messages coming in and messin' with "God's word" all the time.

I think it was politically expedient to NOT be the last church standing against the LGBT community. Mormons and homophobia were being linked together too often. So they ditched the name and the policy (well, a little of it) and will try to repair the damage. and of course . . . tithing is always at risk if you leave anybody out. I don't know HOW members can continue to believe they hav

The substance abuse is an issue. She is not coping with life, even her very safe one. Perhaps counseling could be a condition for being able to stay home a bit longer.

I saw that happen once. The girl was of legal age, so of course nobody could stop her. But the guy basically did all kinds of things to divide her from her very loving and caring family. None of them were religious, so that wasn't a factor. Fortunately, she wasn't a total wimp and she divorced him eventually. He was having an affair, and there didn't appear to be the danger so much of him w

Well GOOD! I say. If a man doesn't want to see women, then he should be the one to take preventative steps. Although it seems really dark glasses would be better. But why should women be the ones who are inconvenienced?
