I attended DLI-Monterey in the mid 80's and graduated from their 47 week Basic Russian course. I thought I was pretty smart until I found myself there with people that were truly gifted in language. It was harder than any other college classes I've taken, and I have a MA. There was no power of the priesthood. The power of beer, maybe. There was a little bar/tavern across the street, and som

Been a tough year for my girls. Last May, my middle daughter, a high school senior, lost her boyfriend (in a ped/car accident that she witnessed). Yesterday my youngest, now a senior, lost a very good friend. He was a musical prodigy, had won national awards, and had nothing but bright lights in his future. Kids and booze. Drowned in his own vomit, at least that's the story. A sad day for

Well, it wasn't really a bad experience, just eye-opening. My wife is a Protestant christian, and I do attend church with her occasionally. We agree to disagree. The people and neighbors I see at her church are pretty well-balanced, and not over-bearing with the Jesus stuff. Good people, trying to live a good life. Those people last night, though. That was a whole new level of Jesus-freak f

Attended a "born-again", devout christian, wedding ceremony last night. Cute couple. But... OMG, it's not just the Mormons who are crazy. In Mormonland, it's "the Gospel", "the Bretheren", "the Church". In born-again land, it's "Jesus", and "Lord", and "Savior". It dominates their thinking, philosophies, family life

It's interesting that your mom was concerned if he would have a "medical discharge". I didn't know that there were classifications for discharges (like the military). But it makes perfect sense that a TBM would worry about appearances, rather than the real issue.

There was no one "tipping point" for me; rather, it was the many ridiculous beliefs - patriarchal blessings, 3 nephites, cursed races, Jaredite submarines, etc. As a teenager, attending regularly (forced to), I was really thinking, "This is crazy." But I didn't have balls enough to say that. The above, added to the fact that mormonism made me miserable, made it easy to just

My mom was on a senior mission stateside when her father passed away. All the family was at the funeral except her. Family church my ass. And she wonders why her own kids don't have much to do with her.

Do yourself a favor: go online to Father Michael's coffee roastery and buy some Eastern Queen. Without a doubt, the best coffee I have ever had. Not much more expensive than others, but worth every penny.

A death by drowning would be my nightmare. Hell no. If I could choose how to go, it would be a massive heart attack in my sleep. Being dead doesn't scare me, it intrigues me. Dying, on the other hand, I'm not so excited about.

Go to ND. The Williston area is booming. Housing is a problem though. Oil field jobs. One giant man camp. Lots of money to be made. Being able to pass a drug test greatly increases your odds.

I sure don't know how you were able to determine that "most" of my kids were held back emotionally... I see this in one or two kids a year, and my colleagues have run across it as well. I don't believe that a 30 yr elementary teacher never experienced this. What is normal development? Most of the world still believes in a Sky Daddy. Does that mean they are not fully developed?

It really is interesting to watch someone defend something that we know is false. It's really not their fault - they've been lied to, read picture books, know the songs by heart, etc. But when someone finally tells them the truth, even if it's their best friend, well, you can see the cog-dis on their face. I teach 5th graders, and it happens every year about this time......sorry Virginia

I agree with this. Have seen how effective it is when an attorney threatens the school district (about my autistic nephew being bullied). Watch them pull out all the stops, immediately. There is a huge spotlight on bullying in schools right now.

I always buy a ticket when the prize gets huge. I live in a very little town, and 2 years ago a local man won the big one. Huge, huge mega-millions pot. Split it two ways. You should have seen the circus. I've never seen a media frenzy like that, before or since. Wouldn't want to be a part of that.

A gun is no good unless the person using it is trained. Most people can't hit the broad side of a barn with a pistol. And probably the biggest issue is that most people aren't mentally or morally ready to kill someone. They will hesitate, and lose. Don't even hold a gun on another person unless your're trained and ready to use it.

Just saw a really stupid movie, The Watch. Aliens were on earth, planning to attack. The only way to kill one was to shoot it in the crotch. Their brains were in their dicks. I hope yours isn't.

My sister, a wild child, got knocked up at age 18 or 19, lost the baby, got married anyway (in the stakehouse), and it lasted all of a year and a half or so. Ended in divorce. At about age 21, she turned over a new leaf, got religious, and put in paperwork to go on a mission. She had to travel to Salt Lake to meet with a GA. They approved. She was doing her paperwork, and during a a physica

"I have too many female friends who don't even know how to be without a man to "take care of them." It bothers me." AMEN! and it doesn't get better with age. After the death of first husband, and a relatively quick mourning time, TBM mother in her 60's got engaged after 3 dates/3 days - to a nice mormon man! and married like a month later. When he died, after an even qui

I am ex-mormon and consider myself agnostic. Wife is and always has been Protestant. Which used to really mess with my head cause she would jump around from Lutheran to Episcopal to Presbyterian depending on the congregation/pastor. Still don't get it, but it is what it is.

I am pretty sure he is not LDS. I live and work in the Moses Lake/Ephrata area. Ephrata is the county seat. I had not heard of Mr. Lee going by his first initial, like so many mormon royalty. Everyone around here refers to him as Mr. Lee, or Angus. When he moved here to this little town, he and his wife instantly became somewhat well-known, as they were both military officers off active
