Our (UU) church cleaning days are a fun activity. We pay for basic weekly janitorial, usually someone who desperately needs a job. They clean the restrooms, run the vacuum, basic surface cleaning. Those who use the kitchen and other areas for activities are expected to clean up after themselves and take out the trash. Then twice a year we have a deep cleaning Saturday. We work hard for about 3 ho

Why would LDS leaders warn people about the flu? Like, what? They have prophets or something? I'll be a prophetess and warn you. If you had a flu shot this year, still stay home if you get sick. When I finally drug my ass into the minor med a couple weeks ago, only because I knew I had to travel the next week and had to kick whatever was sucking the air out of my lungs and giving me the fir

I loved my visiting teacher that I had the last couple years I was a member living in Provo. Although we rarely got to visit outside of our VT appointment, other than passing niceties at church, I truly felt that I had a connection with her and that she was interested in me as a person. It felt like real sisterhood. When she found out I resigned my membership, she came over and knocked on my

Well, anything they can do to make that veil less hideous is progress. The day I got married, I was in the bride's room and put on my dress, then grabbed my veil and my mom was like "what are you doing? Leave that one here until you go outside for pictures, you wear the temple veil to the sealing room." No one had told me. It was back in the day before there was any way to find out a

I clearly remember my favorite sleeveless dress from my BYU days because I made it. We wore a ton of sleeveless things. Couldn’t wear spaghetti straps but things that covered most of your shoulder were fine if you didn’t wear garmies. We didn’t need little capped sleeves. And we never heard of people not letting kids wear sleeveless. A big difference was that in our day, the only single

I know. Don't ya hate it when they turn Blue Boat Home into some kind of sacramental funeral song?

I know people who have been ex’d and have come back. But I know of no one who resigned their membership voluntarily and wanted to rejoin. I’m sure there are a few but it would have to be a very insignificant percentage. And probably even then, it would be for social or family reasons. Once you’ve seen the man behind the curtain, you can’t unsee him. It’s why the cult tries so hard, and

So happy to hear the great ending to your story. There are just so many horror stories about LDS Social Services adoptions. I'm sure they did plenty of illegal things. It was all about getting that baby before the mama changed her mind. One of my close friends found her birth family this past year (through DNA testing). It has also been wonderful for her. I just love these stories.

The older I get, the more I absolutely detest dresses. In fact, can't remember the last time I wore one. Oh wait, it was this summer when I went to chuch with my mom. I'd forgotten to bring a dress so I mentioned to my sister-in-law that I needed to go shopping and find something. She told me not to worry about it, that there were always people in pants (more transient people than in most morm

That guy was a piece of work. But of all the stories I heard about him, I never heard this one. Obviously, no surprise. I just remember being told how lucky we were that we got there after he was gone.

It's been interesting to see the reactions to the hundred billion on the exmo boards. I don't think anything has affected me so hard since I left, or even since I quit believing, long before I resigned my membership. Not even sitting outside during weddings. We find ourselves thinking of the things we gave up to pay, the horrible guilt when we couldn't. Many of us saw our parents struggle, g

It was probably more closely tied to the legal battles Bob Jones University was going through. They were threatened with and eventually lost their tax exempt status while the government was trying to eradicate discrimination in education. They finally allowed Blacks to attend the university, as BYU did, but had bans on interracial dating and Blacks in student government. BYU was fighting to say B

You hit that nail on the head. Yes, I was offended in the church. Many many times. Mormons can be extremely offensive people and the whole Mormon game is just offensive. However I would have left decades before I did if it was just because of being offended. Why didn’t I? I still believed most of the crap. I’d never considered doing any independent research. So belief meant being too scared

Yes, as far as I know, they always settle. I'm sure there are gag orders built into the settlement that even if they'd had to make a financial disclosure, it can't be shared. In fact I really don't know the last time I heard of the church or any higher ups going to a trial. Even with Mark Hoffman, it was common knowledge that the settlement the state made with him was really the settlement the

When someone sues Gawdalmighty’s one and only true church on the face of the Earth (usually because of sexual abuse coverup), is the hundred bil listed in the assets available for settlement? Or because it’s sheltered away in a fiery-day Fund, is it considered money belonging to some other entity?

Do they quote the early apostles who wrote about JS introducing “Celestial Masonry”? That’s why they could accept it. It was familiar to them and it was the secret polygamy club.

I didn’t know that Light The World was a thing you watch. I thought it was just a frame they put on their Facebook profile and some list of things they are supposed to do every day in December or something. What is the 17 min thing you had to watch?

The parts that say to take care of the sick, needy, and poor, the part about how hard it is for a rich man to get into heaven, the parts that say not to judge, and definitely the part where Jeezus turned water into wine. Probably other parts if I thought about it.

The thing about tithing is that it gives awful people a reason to believe that no matter how dishonest, abusive, manipulative, greedy, or whatever they are, they can still get to heaven. I mean, they know that the temple is the closest thing to heaven on Earth, and the most important thing you need to be to get into the temple is not to be honest, not to be nice, just to be a full tithe payer.

The one I grew up with in the 60s and 70s was dark blue. Or not. I guess that's a good sign if I really don't remember.

Depends. If you join a dogmatic church that demands more of your money than you comfortably want to give, it may be stupid. If you join a less dogmatic church because you want a social group that maybe does good things for the community and doesn’t require you to profess belief or loyalty, it may enhance your life. Churches are social clubs. The mormon church is a great social club but too many

Migraines? Back problems? Panic attacks? There are a number of things. Have a slow recovery after you get sent home then get on with your life. No one remembers after a year or so what The early-return mishies were miraculously cured from after they came home. Your parents just need you to go and get an honorable release so they can check it off their celestial to-do list. But you could move you

I’ve never heard of her. Are her books any good or just your typical fare from mormon authors that is written for a middle school mindset?
