When we visited an uncle (grandson of an apostle) he would ask my Dad, ever so politely: "Would you like some elderberry wine?" My Dad would say, "I think I would!" and the elderberry wine would be poured. (I was too young to be asked, but to this day I'd like to try some elderberry wine.)

I had forgotten about this post, NameSign etc. Thanks for reminding me. I still have moments when the memories slip into my brain. We were able to visit the gravesite a few weeks ago (next to the rest of the family.) I was sad to learn about Salt Lake Cabbie earlier this year. skp, I'd like to repost my story about my son's funeral. I'll see if I can find it.

Just returned from a weekend in SLC and witnessed the new airport for the first time. This is nuts! Surely they aren't finished with this. Aren't they going to build a rail line to whisk those of us who arrive on Southwest to the parking garage in just minutes? When we landed Friday night and had to get to the rental car location (not a lot of signs to help us) I thought we'd never get out

One of my great-grandmother's nephews, a son of Samuel Bateman, didn't give up polygamy and joined this group, so I suppose this guy is a distant relative. Found out about this family group when I read UTBOH. By their fruits shall ye know them . . . Mormonism is evil.

Oh no! I missed this. Cabbie and I had lunch together way back on one of my trips to SLC. We communicated now and then, and saw him at an Exmo conference or two. Just the other day I was thinking about him. Yes, his name was Randy. We had lunch at the Market Street Grill. I don't remember much about what we talked about, except that he had his daughter for the weekend or a few days, and

Billy Barty was in my ward way back. I remember young married's events and talking with him. I worked with his wife, Shirley, in Primary. We had several members of the King family in our stake, some in our ward. Also Shawn Engeman, later known as Shawn King. This was in the early 1970s. Weird to look back at this now. I resigned from being a Primary teacher because the lessons to the 8 year o

I watched both episodes last night. I had weird, troubling dreams. I had debated with myself for several days before deciding to watch it. I read the book shortly after it came out, years after I'd left the church. On page 11 I saw the first mention of one of my family names--and it kept popping up. I did some research and learned that one of my cousins refused to accept the Manifesto. Eventu

I was familiar with it decades ago.Area where I grew up. Where by the time I was 15 I knew I didn't want to live in SLC the rest of my life. Some talk of another high school reunion in Sugarhouse Park. I doubt I'll go.

This rings a bell. I had an aunt who was into this when I was growing up. My parents made fun of her. Once at the dinner table my Mom noted that she herself had droopy eyelids, which according to my aunt, meant Mom was stubborn and difficult to convince of anything. Yep, said Mom. My droopy eyelids mean that Aunt L. will never make me believe in Personology! This was in Salt Lake a lon

No pants in the chapel! That was a rule in my last stake. I remember one woman about to get her Ph.D. came to an RS evening meeting in the chapel in a nice, expensive-looking pantsuit. She was so apologetic. Can't believe nothing has changed since then.

You are talking to someone who, after driving around with friends, took Mom's '59 Fairlane to a gas station and got $2 worth gas. I remember $.29 per gallon gas. And they pumped it for you, cleaned the windshield, and checked the oil and the air in the tires. Remember the gas wars? Got down to less than that. Then came the 1970s.

We are all related, but talking about 3rd cousins, some times removed. When I read Under the Banner of Heaven I was intrigued by the interviews with a Bateman down in Jeffs' area. Yep, one of my great-uncle's sons couldn't accept the Manifesto and eventually joined one of the polygamist groups. Then I read Will Bagley's book on MMM and there is another Bateman--the guy with the white flag--and

Tried to find out if he is or who his parents are. I just wonder if I’m related to him. Dave, not Merrill. I already know about the latter. Seems like all the Utah Batemans belong to the same family. I’m asking the anti-Semitic Bateman who’s been in the news lately.

So sorry about Will. In his book about MMM I learned about how one of my family (1st cousin, 3x removed) was involved. And another ancestor worked on the cover up. I had a chance to hear him speak about Devil's Gate a long time ago. I wish I'd had a chance to get to know him personally. There are a lot of questions I have and would loved to talk about them with him. This is one of the disadva

Real estate prices in the Bay Area have been astounding lately. Houses in my neighborhood sell for $300,000 to $400,000 more than the asking price. These aren't mansions. I've noticed over the years that whenever the real estate prices in CA go up, Mormons sell and move back to Utah. How do I know? These are my relatives or acquaintances. Good riddance.

My nephew and his wife are MDs who have been working with Covid patients since the beginning of the pandemic. They used to post positive, encouraging reports and advice on FB. They rarely do now. They are worn down. They are tired. The ICUs are full. The family worries about them so much. I am so grateful for all the doctors, nurses, and workers who care so much. Who keep showing up. It must

Thank you all for your comments. Loss is inevitable if we live long enough. Greyfort, you are right.Covid has made it worse for many reasons. My parents came of age during the Depression and WWII. They had a much darker view of life than I have had. Right now I think I must have grown up in an age of happy optimism--I believed the world was getting better and better. And then there was the af

An in-law, not a Mormon, said goodbye to her son today. He was already gone. He had a heart attack and could not be revived. He was 44. Bringing me back to my own grief. I don't believe I will see my son again. I don't believe in another life in a future existence. Yet I am back. So how does a former Mormon live with with loss and grief? I want to offer words of comfort, but I cannot say

I thought that name sounded familiar. A relative was selling this stuff a few years ago. She became quite defensive over criticism of the company a while back, She's not a Mormon. It occurs to me that she hasn't been demonstrating/selling her stuff on FB recently. She lives in Texas, but in Austin, which gives you clues as to her politics. My guess is that she's out of it. I hope so. I never l

So a friend is going to turn 99 this week. His wife died 3 years ago and he was lonely so he went to online dating sites. He now has a 55 year-old girlfriend. He's not a Mormon. He's type B though and keeps fit and only drinks one glass of wine a day. He says he's going to live to be 163. His goal. I say, if that's his goal, my goal is to live to be 128. Anyway, congratulations!I've had a

Never happened to me in the 50s or 60s. First time I had anything remotely like this was in late 1962 when the bishop talked to me about going on a mission. There were no personal questions by the bishop, who was a good friend of my parents, or the stake president, also a good friend. Something vague about chastity. I really don't remember. Did I have a boyfriend? Yes, but I'd broken it off with

I loved to watch Charlie play. At times Mick was just too much and it was fun to watch Charlie never change his expression. I'm sad he's gone. Yesterday Don Everly. All morning I had an Everly Brothers ear worm. Now will have to switch to the Stones.
