So a friend is going to turn 99 this week. His wife died 3 years ago and he was lonely so he went to online dating sites. He now has a 55 year-old girlfriend. He's not a Mormon. He's type B though and keeps fit and only drinks one glass of wine a day. He says he's going to live to be 163. His goal. I say, if that's his goal, my goal is to live to be 128. Anyway, congratulations!I've had a

Never happened to me in the 50s or 60s. First time I had anything remotely like this was in late 1962 when the bishop talked to me about going on a mission. There were no personal questions by the bishop, who was a good friend of my parents, or the stake president, also a good friend. Something vague about chastity. I really don't remember. Did I have a boyfriend? Yes, but I'd broken it off with

I loved to watch Charlie play. At times Mick was just too much and it was fun to watch Charlie never change his expression. I'm sad he's gone. Yesterday Don Everly. All morning I had an Everly Brothers ear worm. Now will have to switch to the Stones.

My great-grandfather was also in the first presidency but in an earlier era. I'm pretty sure he never claimed to have seen Jesus. I have the impression from what I've found out about him and what my Mom told me that he was a pretty down to earth guy.

Appearing in the New York Times: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/08/16/style/beards-brigham-young-university.html?searchResultPosition=1 Professor emeritus is crusader for right to wear beards at BYU. Beards are masculine, right? Mormon men want to appear masculine, right? Prophets had beards, right? One additional fant about Warner--he was student body president of South High School 1

This is a topic that bugs me. During the last drought the nearby Mormon churches acre or so of rolling lawns stayed green. What, do they have their own water supply? Now in another drought and while they have let a little bit of the lawn go brown, there is still at least an acre of green grass. There is a Catholic church next door--in fact they share a driveway with the Mormons, but the Cathol

Thomas Sheehan, author of The First Coming: How the Kingdom of God became Christianity. https://itunes.apple.com/us/itunes-u/historical-jesus/id384233911 This was the first class I took at Stanford's Continuing Studies, "The Historical Jesus," taught by Thomas Sheehan. Years ago. A quick search found the class offered for free on iTunes. Sheehan is a great teacher. As far as I

I don’t remember this one, but back then I paid no attention to GA talks. None of my friends did either. I lived in SLC suffocating in church culture, but they couldn’t make me pay attention to GA talks.

Ah--FKATA! When I was a Jr. Gleaner our leader told us about FKATA. I didn't know it was a real club. She was at the U of U and would tell guys she went out with but didn't particularly want to kiss that she belonged to this club. So fast forward a few years. I'm at the U and I accept a date with a guy who wanted to be seen as a--what did we call them back then? I only agreed because it was g

Sad, but I admire anyone who takes an opportunity to say goodbye. Damn, so many we didn't get a chance to say goodbye to.

My first companion referred to the Argentine pads as 'mattress pads" I had tampons and when I ran out I asked my Mom to send me a big box along along with some root beer mixes, a flavor they didn't have in Argentina in those days. She did and it came right through customs, fortunately. (Other LM's had to go to the adana, customs, to get their packages.) Later I had Argentine companions. One

I've forgotten how awful it was. There were also the wide legged ones, which my Mom wore. Until she and Dad returned to full activity, she hung her garments on the back of the bathroom door every night. I don't know what Dad did with his.

Back in the days of one-piecers, I was a missionary in Argentina. Nylon or cotton were the choices I recall. Both had problems. Then we had to wear nylons over them--no pantyhose yet--but that would have been worse. Lots of curiosity on the part of local female members. Of course, I had grown up in SLC and knew not to complain. And later, being pregnant in those awful one-piecers. Then being a

There was a time when you could buy the underwear at Penney's.I remember going with my girlfriend when I was about 12 to buy underwear for her mom. I imagine ZCMI and other stores also carried it. Hello Ted! I just happened by to see what is going on--nice to see you!

DH and our oldest son were diagnosed with ADHD as adults. We had already left the church, but this helps explain part of the reason we left. They are both very intelligent, which makes it harder to explain why we stayed as long as we did. Life improved for both with medication and counseling by an expert in both. DH later had much more responsibility at work and made a lot more money. Too bad

I didn’t make myself clear enough. I’m looking for the parody version of the door approach. I remember well enough the version I memorized, “Senior Gomez, Somos misioneras de la Iglesia de Jesu. . . En mil ochocientos veinte, Jose Smith fue un joven blah blah. . “ I will probably have nightmares tonight. There was a funny parody that circulated, but I can’t find it and don’t

From the the church of Rattle-Day Snakes. Anyone have the old door approach? It was around in the early 60s but I can’t quite remember it. I was “fired” from my job as seminary newspaper editor for publishing this door approach but I can’t find it now.

Fascinating points, Tevai. My MIL converted to Judaism so she could marry FIL. My DH was 9 or 10 when she met the Mormons and converted with her children. Eventually FIL converted and became a local Mormon celebrity. When I met DH, I knew he was different from most Mo boys I'd dated. For one thing, he said he wanted a smart wife and after his mission was going to date all the BYU girls on the

Glad to hear you're doing well, T-Bone. I pop up here now and then and it's fun to hear from folks who have done well in moving on. Some of my family members and most of my in-laws are still in the midst of Mormonism, so there is always something to deal with.

Wow--this brought back some memories, and not good ones. My mother was very angry with me when I came home. She held it in for a few days and then lambasted me. All my failings, not being sufficiently grateful in public and private, and for writing a letter to my sister encouraging her to stand up to my folks when they were trying to control her life. "The dog found it and chewed it up,&q

How about those sick jokes. 1960s? Earlier? "Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play?" "I don't care who your father is, get down off my telephone pole!" Many more but I can't remember them now.

Yep,this was the routine in my temple experiences, which ended abruptly when I realized we were just a bunch of sheep going through the motions. I managed to get through at least 12 years of being active without attending before I left for good. Nevertheless, I got a polite phone call every month asking about my temple attendance. Helped that there weren't nearly so many temples around in tho
