Luckily my folks were inactive until I was about 12. Then conference played on the radio for days at a time. Easy to ignore. Go to my room and read science fiction. I did attend a session once with my older sister. I preferred to go to the Tabernacle for Youth Symphonies with Maurice Abravanel. He was great, and far more spiritual. Then one day I was an adult and conference meant a weekend

One of them is a student at BYU but at this point I don't know how it started. Other family members are quarantining. They are a nice LDS group, and as far as I know, the BYU student wasn't out partying. So far as I know, none of them are seriously ill. And I see that today, Sept 17, Utah has over 1100 new cases. Oh, and they aren't talking about it on FB so far. They are good, well-ed

One of my regrets in this life is that did not go visit her and talk to her when I was a student at UCLA in the late '60s. It didn't occur to me at the time. I just never thought about going and talking to a controversial person. Yes, I'd read her NMKMH by then. I do wish I had. My Jr. Gleaner teacher had told our class that if we wanted to know if we had a testimony, we should read NMKMH. I w

We lived in Northridge for 5 years in the mid-70s--we bought our first house there. I don't remember it being so warm. Before that we lived in Studio City almost 3 years after graduating from college. It was in Northridge that I realized I wouldn't be able to stay in the church much longer. In January we were in LA and did a drive around the valley, including Porter Ranch. Wow so sad. Afte

Dark orange skies here in SF Bay Area. Our nearby fires are nearly contained, but new fires are sending smoke our way, mixed with fog it makes for a weird atmosphere. Labor Day, 2 days ago, it was 105° and today it's 68. The colder air should tamp down the fires. My 11-yr-old grandnephew has learned a new word: "Apocalypse." (G-son of ex-mo relative.)

Read Mary Trump’s book, Bolton’s memoir, (tedious) Silva’s, which was fun but not his best. Also finished The Devil: A New Biography. It is a history of what people thought about the devil through the ages. I’ve got some history and political books to read, but I think I’ll download some mysteries next.

There was a Stanford professor--at least a teacher--who taught a class DH took about the Mayans. This was about 15 years ago. The prof had translated the Popol Vuh. After the last class DH went and talked to him about the BoM. The prof said the Mayans were not the BoM people. Yes, the prof admitted he was a Mormon. I don't remember his name, but he wasn't famous, especially not as a Mormon

I've heard stories where it's the guy who's had a revelation he was supposed to marry a certain young woman, but this is the first time I've heard that the girl had the voice in her head. Even when I was an active Mormon I would have run like hell from someone like this.

Back to Argentina--there were several missionaries who married locals. They got much better-looking,talented wives than they could have attracted back home. And the girls got to go live in the U.S. In one of the branches there was (allegedly) a club of girls and their mothers who had the object of marrying off the girls to North Americans. The MP warned the elders about getting caught. I was i

The Argentine North mission was formed just before I was called. Our Language Training group was mostly bound for the Northern Mission. LM was the common designation back them, at least when we weren't las hermanas. On Monday mornings we had a District meeting at one of the branches. I only remember the ones where most of us were called out for our sins. After the meeting--recreation. Often

DH & I met on our mission. We were friends at first then realized we had similar outlooks and goals, and yeah, we liked each other. Agreed to meet up after returning home. Married 55 years, left church 38 years ago. Frequently life was a real challenge, but here we are now. He’s writing his mission memoirs. He was a counselor in the mission presidency. We’ve been back to Argentina 4 or 5

Five years ago I got a message from Linked In that they had been hacked. Accordingly, I changed my password. I don't spend much time at Linked In. Last week I got a message from "Audry"somebody announcing my old LI password and that "Audry" had taken over my computer, blah blah. Control of camera, blah blah. Videoed me doing embarrassing things while at porn sites. The thin

Whoops, you're right. Should have looked at the graph before I posted. It was 6 million at the time I left, but just 2 million around the time I went on my mission. So 2 million to 16 million in 60 years. Still not very impressive.

What happened? Growing up in late 50s and early 60s the church had 6 million members. One of the language instructors at the LTM at BYU said back then that soon we'd be going out, watching people, and we would recognize people with that special inspiration we had and know right then to teach that person the gospel and they would accept it right on the spot. What happed to Alvin Dyer's THE CHAL

Boo Dr. Spock, who said that I should hand the spoon, biscuit, chicken stick, whatever to the right hand of my baby. At 10 months my son was already transferring it to his left to use it. He was always a strong lefty. He used to complain that there were no left handed screwdrivers. Then a left-handed store opened on Pier 39 in San Francisco. He loved to go there. He was also ADD, as

Crashed: How a Decade of Financial Crises Changed the World, by Adam Tooze. This was a NYT book of the year for 2018. I bought it a year ago and read 100 pages and put it down. I started over this year and have less than 100 pages to go. Unlike most books on the 2008 crisis, Tooze talks about what happened to Europe and brings it up to Trump and 2018. Endless miseries in Greece and just u

Sorry to hear this, but others have said, medication alone won't help much with marital issue. DH diagnosed in mid-50s, Adderall didn't work, but good old dexedrine does. Didn't solve the rest of his problems though. He's been in therapy for several years--marriage continuing depended on it.I see some progress. If he doesn't have therapy, wife #4 will be out the door soon.

Eager Mormon historians, growing in number, are eagerly seeking out the facts about the lives and doctrines of past Mormon heroes. George Q. Cannon's journals, long kept hidden from most of us, are now online (slightly redacted the names of folks exes or disciplined for adultery.) It's all there online, the visits to his several wives, the children born almost simultaneously to his several wives.

I had return to mission dreams for decades. Sometimes I returned and had to be the 3rd missionary in a former two companionship. Finally in my '60s they stopped. Or else I just returned and had to go back to college and couldn't find the books or the classroom. Now I dream I can't find a bathroom when I really need it. And if I find one, there is a really long line, or else the toilet is missi

I remember some of these songs from school and from what? Ukulele lessons. Battle Hymn more from regular sacrament meetings. My parents attended MIA in 1928, but no idea what songs they sang. My Dad and Mom met at MIA. He was 16 and she was 14. That would have been in 1923. They got married in 1935 after a long on and off relationship. Neither one was much of a singer. The "old 17

They were on the Utah State JC championship basketball team together in the late 1920s.My Dad had some stories about George & Lenore, but at the time I wasn't interested enough to remember them. The citizenship question wasn't settled because Romney's campaign lost traction after his brainwashing comment. Someone else who went t
