I suspect I'm related to Mo leaders now in office, but I don't have time/energy to check it out. My Mormon ancestors had so many kids! Lots of 2nd and now 3rd cousins out there.

Sad to learn of this. He was a decent person who made a great contribution to Mormonism, even though the church didn't want it. I have most of his books. Some day I'll get around to reading Quinn's biography of J. R. Clark--a hateful human being.

For someone who is older, Google is great. My friend and I were Skyping and neither of us could remember the name of the great newscaster we loved so. A quick Google--it was Walter Cronkite. And that movie star from that movie we talked about? Oh yeah, Tom Cruise. Now, if Google will be able to help us find our car keys. . .

Not so old. I was 28 when I got my BA--interrupted by mission, marriage and 2 kids. Then I pursued my age 20 goal and went to law school--graduated at 35 while STILL an active Mormon. I had a great RS VT who helped to protect me--her husband went to night law school and she knew the difficulties. Eventually the bishop told me I couldn't be an active member without a church job. But he took ou

By age 16 I wanted out of Utah. I would go to NYC and become a journalist. But I would return to settle down. Then on my mission I met a guy from California. (Long story skipped over.) I married him and moved to CA. (Another long story.) At one time I said I'd move back to Utah for a million dollars--this was when a million meant something. Then we left the church. Funny thing, most of my

Ha! Good question. Still remember the shock when the temple workers in the Bride's room wouldn't let me put on my own arm coverings. Fake sleeves? and the top of the neck covering. Of course, nobody could see the dress anyway what with the robe etc.

I feel sad about the mural announcement. December 1964. SLC temple was closed for remodeling. I had a mission call. One Saturday morning my parents, along with a close friend who was a member of the bishopric and his wife, and I drove drove south from SLC on a cold, foggy, dark morning to Manti for my endowments. We had to be there by a certain time, but my Dad couldn't drive fast through the

They must have been with Sam Brannan, California's first millionaire. Love Brannan stories. Did your ancestors stay in California or did they make their way to Utah?

I read Ben's book a few months ago. I enjoyed it a lot--it's a step forward in Mormon studies. It's written to appeal to nonMormons as well as members, and sets the story more within the broad area of early American History, which I believe is Ben's specialty. I follow Ben on Twitter--he's still a Mormon and goes to church when it's not a pandemic and he's on the board of the Mormon History Assoc

My DH has photos of cousins from the 1930s. No one knew what happened to them until the researcher at Yad Vashem found them. In the early 20th century his ancestors, who were poor, came to the US for a new life. The better-off ones stayed in Eastern Europe. They died in the Holocaust.

Thanks for the music. Expresses some of how I feel. This week: new president! Rain expected in California! DH and I got our first Covid vaccines today! It took about 10 frustrating days dealing with online crashes and overall mess, but we found a place to make an appointment about an hour from us. Just finished reading a book I found on my shelf--Amazon tells me I bought it in 2012, and I thi

Just found out Biggs of AZ is a Mormon. He's one of those accused of showing the rioters around the Capitol the day before the riots. Another reason to resign--if I already hadn't done it and have at least 1,000 other reasons.

Several times today I've thought about the rallies Cleon and the Birchers held at the U of U back in the 60s. And probably Reed Benson, ETB's son, was there as well. McKay was too old and not strong enough to rein in his unruly apostle--at least he sent him to Europe for a while. Wasn't enough.

I've had anxiety dreams for weeks--I feared this could happen. I was a college student in So Cal in the late 1960s. I've been trying to remember if I ever felt like I do now. I don't think so. Thanks for the condolences, Tom and all of you who've watched the disintegration of our constitutional norms. And what did you think of that Captain Moroni guy in DC? Kind of embarrassing for church

My DH had a bris. His Dad was Jewish, his Mom converted so she could marry him. She wasn’t really converted though, and when she found the Mormons she converted and pulled DH out of Hebrew school and had him baptized. Later his Dad also converted and became somewhat of a local celebrity. Years later when we left Mormonism, DH spent some time with a local Conservative rabbi. He was willing t

DH noted that this was the first Christmas since we were marred 50+ years ago that we were alone, just the two of us. Family Zoom later, but not the same. We got through it, but I have to say, if we lived in Utah it would have been tough. Lots of memories this year. I do get a bit down when days are short. I don’t have SAD, but I’m not good with cold dreary weather. While not a cheery sea

There are a lot of reports on Twitter of members unhappy with the church’s statements. They come from folks in SE Idaho and Utah Valley. Well, follow the prophet folks. I was surprised to learn this, but then, I’ve been away from Utah a long time.

I arrived shortly after the mission was divided between Argentine and North Argentine. I remember that Quilmes seemed like an outpost. I do drive by here now and then just to find out how people are doing. I found rfm in 2002 looking for information about Tom Murphy. A few months later we resigned. Didn’t know we could do that. DH is writing a memoir of his mission—he took a class on

55 years for me. Argentina. The church had changed the age for women to go to 21 from 23 a few months earlier. Shocked when the bishop asked me to go. One day on the pampas, outside of Pergamino, walking down a dirt road I asked myself: "What are you, Sister Phantom Shadow, doing walking down a dirt road in Argentina when you should be at home registering for fall quarter of your senior y

I don't remember the war, but I do remember that we had a Victory Garden which later became our back lawn. I have photos of me as a toddler in that garden. (In SLC.) And I do remember when my uncle came home from the war--a big day. He was my Dad's younger brother who I'm told, was drafted in 1940. My folks talked about The War when I was older, so I knew about food shortages.

Yep, we were coming to the end in the '50s, and more so in the '60s. Remember Cleon Skousen and Duane Crowther? And here I am 50 years later and none of those predicted things happened. But wait, is it happening now? I do remember in Skousen's book that he predicted that at the final judgment (I think) our entire lives would be projected onto a large screen and every little secret would be sh

Hi Tyson. I'm not around here much anymore but tonight I saw your post and wanted to say hello. I've enjoyed your thoughtful posts over the years. I wish you the best. I just had a birthday that tells me I can no longer identify myself other than elderly, even though I am healthy and in good shape. In my life I've never before seen what is going on currently in the USA. I've lived through lot
