I was reading Steve Benson's post on the Star Palace in Provo during the late 1970s, and it brought back a memory to me of a post I had sent several years ago. It was about a link to a website that showcases surveys from top-40 stations. Below is the link for Utah: http://www.las-solanas.com/arsa/stations.php?vqry=utah&lidx=0&srt1=tsc_prs+DESC Click on any of the stations to see the

Actually, the Internet is widely available in the Muscle Shoals area, and several of the market's radio stations are streaming their signals online (Keeping track of the radio and Internet radio industries is another one of my pastimes). That said, those who don't listen to Internet radio still outnumber those who do, and traditional radio still holds sway, especially among elderly and rural pers

From time to time, I read on this board and other ex-Mormon sites comments like "I can't believe that I fell for this," or questions like "How could I have fallen for this?" and "How could the people in Joseph Smith's time have been so naïve as to fall for this." These questions often come from people who often don't recognize how much in need of both personal and s

Leonard Nimoy (as Mr. Spock): "Visit to a Sad Planet," https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWIJEUm_Jl0&feature=youtube_gdata_player Even though this never made top-40, the song's message is still timely, especially on hearing the news of the narrator's death.

Thanks for sharing this piece. As a practicing atheist/agnostic myself, I think it is important to parse outthe the two very different questions of whether such a person actually existed (it seems most likely he did) and whether such a person was the son of a god and the creator of miracles (most likely not).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fF9yNuMhkgQ&feature=youtube_gdata_player I personally know the creator of this video though I won't divulge his name here. He has prepared quite a few videos along this line of thought, and they tend to be somewhat formulaic. Some may also consider them to be offensive. What I especially like about this one is the list of known human behaviors he presents ne

R.Packham makes a good point that I totally missed. Who needs explicit details when all you have to do to ruin one's sexual possibilities is limit them by suggesting that anything outside of the perceived norm is deviant. And the LDS church is very good at this because all of us (or nearly all of us) are highly open to suggestion--we all want to be part of the group.

I was thinking of when I wrote my original post. That said, I believe this Nigerian pastor goes beyond the Mormons in two additional ways: 1) He is more explicit. He not only defines the woman sleeping on top as being wrong but lists mastaurbation as being evil by name. For all of the talk about "little factories," that Boyd K. Packer places in his pamphlet, I don't think that either

Hi to all. I wish I had found this on Valentine's Day. http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2015/02/sex-tips-from-an-end-time-pastor-demons-will-torture-married-couples-who-practice-woman-on-top/#.VOVRsqRbOUA.facebook I know from past posts by Steve Benson, Bob McCue, and others that Mormonism got into the marriage bed. But I don't think that Mormonism ever went this far.

I have been reading these threads off and on now. And while the below is not directly on the original topic, I think it may shed some light in a couple of areas. Does a Marxist have to be an atheist? Karl Marx thought so. My view is maybe--I keep thinking about the known beliefs of Dorothy Day. Does an atheist have to be a Marxist? No, definitely not. My best friend is an atheist; he also h

The word "implodes" means from the inside in a relatively quick fashion. That said, my guess is that the end of the LDS church will probably come from inside with heavy pressure placed by outside forces.

http://www.forwardprogressives.com/georgia-children-humiliated-not-participating-school-prayer/ Whenever I read stories like this, I think of some of the things I've read about with non-Mormons in public schools in Utah. I know that some non-Mormon parents, backed by the ACLU, sued the public school system in Utah for allowing Mormon "tutors" to try to convert the non-Mormon kids to

The below comes from today's Morning Edition. http://www.npr.org/2015/01/30/382374060/from-laundering-to-profiteering-a-multitude-of-sins-at-the-vatican-bank While it concerns the Roman Catholic church and its bank, what strikes me from the story are the similarities between how both the Mormon and Catholic churches viewed Adolf Hitler and Naziism. Neither entity foresaw Mr. Hitler's behavi

Finally Free: As a nevermo, I find myself agreeing with Mr. Bachman. One of the things I've had to learn as I have matured is that not all victims are equal and that blaming the victim is not always a bad idea. It's really a case-by-case thing. It may sound crappy, but that is the world in which we live, be we Mormon, ex-Mormon, or non-Mormon. I was struck by your choices of giving priestho

There is another similarity between the article and the inspiring thread I forgot to mention: the role of the cops. Quoting from the thread that gave me the inspiration to post: "So, a couple of nights ago I got a phone call from a highway patrolman informing me that my daughter was caught performing oral sex on a guy in a public place. (We are talking up a canyon in the dark) Anyway, we

One of the nicer things about human beings' short-term mindset is that we tend to forget things over time. Since your daughter is not willing to listen to anything you say now, just tell her you love her and that you will support her with whatever decision(s) she decides to make. As she becomes older and gains new experiences, it is most likely she will come to accept the rashness of her behavior

To be honest, I don't think that ex-Mormons are being targeted here. The target audience is teenagers and young adults who are currently in the church but who would like more freedom to indulge in adult activity than the church allows. The story is also aimed at older Mormons who are doubting but who are too fearful or lazy to do the research.

I think that both the recent incident in France and the pope's latest statement are part of a much larger problem: our growing inability to laugh at ourselves and our own foibles. Think about it. Dr. Demento is no longer heard on the radio, and parody recordings can now only be created with the written consent of the author of the original recording, meaning that a lot fewer are being recorded

Back in October, the below thread appeared on this forum. http://exmormon.org/phorum/read.php?2,1397288,1397288 The below article from the Tampa Bay Times made me think of this thread. http://www.tampabay.com/news/specials/tampa-homeless-program-uses-unpaid-destitute-residents-as-steady-labor/2208350 It appears that Mr. Atchison is trying to carry out the will of the Old Testament.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TW2y0MiH1hE While this was a minor hit for Jose Feliciano in the fall of 1968, it was Joe Cocker's version, that was never released as a single, that was my favorite. "I'm gonna ride for love and freedom," he sings during the song's closing. And you better believe that I am riding on that train!

I can't. Perhaps the ex-Mormon community can give some helpful advice in this regard like: Elder Packer is spending too much time worrying abou

To be honest, I'm not so sure that the LDS church craves mainstream public acceptance as much as it craves acceptance by mainstream fundamentalist religions. And those fundamentalist churches the LDS church wants to ally itself with are just as deadset against homosexual marriage as the LDS church is, if not more so.

Looking at the transcript provided (Thanks, Stumbling), I don't really think that the Roman church will have a lot of problems with it. Most of what Mr. Eyring says here is part of both Roman Catholic and Protestant theology (though I don't necessarily think it reflects modern realities and perspectives, particularly in western industrialized countries). It was probably very smart for Mr. Eyring

People tend to compartmentalize beliefs that may be opposite those their religion may teach--it helps them keep their friendships and families together. With the possible exception of the current pope, the heads of most mainstream religions with large U.S. populations are conservative. I suspect that a lot of that conservativism has to do with the wishes of these leaders to gain wealth and inf

Most of the moral values held by Christians today either come from the rules set forth in the Old Testament or the statements set out by Paul in the New Testament. Outside of divorce and adultery and (possibly) mastaurbation, Jesus did not communicate anything about what Christian moral values should be. From what I've read elsewhere, the strict moral codes used by many Christians today go bac
