I remember reading somewhere (can't think of where right now) that the Bible has no more historical truth in it than the Quoran or any number of other religious texts. And, if one stops to think about it, the purpose of the Bible is to sell its viewpoint, not give an accurate accounting of anything! So I would have to say "no" to the question of whether or not the Bible can be read as a

I found the below article yesterday but, due to the board's monthly closure, was unable to post it then. http://www.christianity.com/christian-life/political-and-social-issues/it-is-the-price-of-citizenship-an-elegy-for-religious-liberty-america.html?p=0 From the article: "The most amazing language found in the decision of the New Mexico court is not in the main opinion but in the

This really should be no big surprise. A story on one of NPR's newscasts yesterday said that there were women protesting outside of the temple because they couldn't participate in the priesthood sessions (I hope I got the wording right--I was never a Mormon). Those ostriches! I wonder how long it will take for my braille proofreading partner (who is very LDS) to recognize that these idiots who ar

This is in response to Johnstockton12's post at http://exmormon.org/phorum/read.php?2,1014864 After reading "The Science of Why We Don't Believe," which I posted a couple of months back at http://exmormon.org/phorum/read.php?2,931377,931377#msg-931377 I would have to say that poster Nickname is probably the closest to the truth. This is what is wrong with mind-numbing religious cults. http://www.truth-out.org/news/item/17720-former-us-olympian-escapes-christian-sects-ideology-of-fear From the article: "Lyons complained to Mom that she could not speak in tongues, to which Mom replied: “Yabba dabba doo. For the most part, I agree with everything said on this thread. Marrying your cat, dog, canary, dining room table, or vacuum cleaner are certainly not in the works even after today's rulings. The one area that I think might see being liberalized (and I wouldn't agree with it) would be the lifting on the bans on polygamy. While I highly doubt that the current LDS church would seek the ban to be

Actually, SuzieQ#1 is absolutely correct. One need only look at what happened yesterday to the 1965 Voting Rights Act to see why. Nobody on either side of this fight is going to give it up, especially not with the 5-4 decision that came out today.

Please forgive me for pointing this out but your comments about white people no longer needing to feel ashamed to be white are almost word-for-word what (supposedly) former KKK member David Duke said during the 1980s and 1990s.

gfsien: The last time I checked, the best evidence showed that less than 10% of women who have had abortions suffer from the aftereffects that you describe. The whole truth is that the vast majority of women who undergo the procedure are grateful that it was done and available to them--they were unable, for whatever reason, to support the fetus/child inside of them.

This is in response to the thread at http://exmormon.org/phorum/read.php?2,927486 particularly the arguments between poster SNB and others about KSL and the Mormon news media bias in Utah. While I don't live there (I live in Phoenix, Arizona), I have been up there several times. In addition, I very closely follow the radio industry, having once wishing to break into the field myself. The following two paragraphs from the 2010 AP article stick out at me: "The textbook delivers a religious ultimatum to young readers and parents, warning in its History of Life chapter that a "Christian worldview ... is the only correct view of reality; anyone who rejects it will not only fail to reach heaven but also fail to see the world as it truly is." When the AP asked a

Yikes! http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2013/may/08/christian-home-schooling-dark-side While Mormons do not usually home school their children (there are seminaries either next door to, or across the street from, most Utah public schools for indoctrination), I do think that at least a part of this article may hit home with some of you. To wit: "Too frequently, Stollar says, t

I think you are both right and wrong. From what I've read, Dr. King was a religious person who used his position as a black Baptist minister (if memory serves) to gain support for the concept of racial integration. And although we'll never know, I highly doubt that Mr. King would have been nearly as successful with his campaign for racial integration had he not had emotional the zeal provided by

True, but it can be argued very strongly that it was Christianity that destroyed the Roman Empire. Those marauders that sacked the city in 476 A.D. had been converted to Christianity prior to the sacking.

Religion, oh religion! You are such a contrarian. On the one hand, you have given us Mohatma Gandi, Martin Luther King, Jr., Desmond Tutu, and Mother Theresa, all of whom have arguably done their best to make the world a better place for all of us. On the other hand, you have also given us Joseph Smith, Mary Baker Eddy, Jerry Fallwell, Pope Benedict XVI, and many more who have sought to destroy t

I know that during the early 1980s after Pope John Paul II took over the reigns of the Roman Catholic church, he became very involved in talks aimed at reuniting the different Christian faiths. I remember hearing on the radio the question of the willingness of the LDS church to discuss the issues with the Catholic pontiff with the Mormons saying that they would be willing to discuss Christian reu

One of my favorite cousins came to visit me today. She was involved with me in the 1980s in Toastmasters, and she has turned out to be a smart person with a really cool head. She was also very religious at times when I wasn't. So it was a surprise this morning when she stopped by the house and said (among other things) that neither she nor her husband were encouraging their daughter to be more

I agree with you. The focus should be on enjoying life and how to prevent both STDs and pregnancies. Unfortunately, these are not the motives behind the purity movement. As one sex educator (Dr. Marty Klein, if memory serves) pointed out a many years back (and I think you hinted at this in your comment), if you don't teach your children about sex yourself, they will experiment behind your back, a

http://socialistaction.org/2013/01/purity-myth-hurts-young-women/ Do not let where this piece comes from prevent you from reading it. Nearly all of this editorial/book review is right on target. Our obsession with both purity and virginity is really hurting us both in terms of our expectations and how we interpret sexual events. And while the LDS church neither sponsors nor encourages particip
