Yet that song has motivated, and continues to motivate, women all around the U.S., if not the world, to seek ways to make their lives better for themselve

While not answering your post directly, I think that what I am about to say could assist you and others recovering from Mormonism in dealing with the issue of the prophet. The biggest thing to keep in mind when dealing with the prophet issue is: has the prophet predicted anything. If so, what percentages of his (since we're talking Mormonism) predictions have come to pass. The first question b

While it is true that nobody has ever ultimately cheated death, there have been medical cases where people's heartbeats have stopped for a very short time (we're talking less than 30 seconds) and have lived to tell about the experience or lack thereof.

It's interesting that toxic positivity and science denialism are placed together in the same thread--they are two very distinct and separate issues with the only real similarity between them being the role of fundamentalist religion promoting both concepts. While the concept of positive thinking has been around with us for quite some time, the earliest that I know of it being written down was

In this reply, I'm going to use a specific name that I hope is not one of the people you, Tevai, are referring to. Twenty some-odd years ago when I was working in the hotel industry and my father was giving me rides to and from work, he registered a complaint with me about Glen Campbell. Apparently, it had been reported that Mr. Campbell, while leaving some of his money to his kids, was going

Methinks you could write a book about the hidden lives of the male stars you knew who impregnated girls, left them, and then refused to acknowledge their offspring in their own wills. It would probably be a big seller, especially if you used the stars' names (Of course, you would probably need to hire a lawyer in case any of those who actually inherited tried to sue you for libel). But that do

Your post reminds me very much of the Youngbloods' "Darkness Darkness," the B-side of their 1969 hit, "Get Together." The lyrics are as follows: "Darkness darkness, be my pillow Take my head and let me sleep In the coolness of your shadow In the silence of your deep. Darkness darkness, hide my yearning For the things that cannot be. Keep my mind from constant t

Beyond the partisan issues, it sounds like your neighbor is mentally unstable. Unfortunately, there are people and groups who are trying to use that instability to their advantage.

Summer wrote in part: "There is often a level of meanness on social media that is beyond my comprehension." You make a very good point and one that I've read and heard from other commentators on this subject. When we write online, regardless of whether it is email, social media, or even a site such as this, we (or many of us) let our emotions go and write whatever we think, regard

While there is some evidence of increased suicides among some young people because of social media bullying, I must insist on disagreeing with the charge that the use of social media is why many young adults (18-30--and I'm not sure that the quoted 51% is correct) continue to live at home instead of moving out. These people are having a much tougher time finding jobs that pay well enough for them

I was born, and spent the first 8-and-1/2 years of my life in, Tujunga, at the base of the mountains to the east of the San Fernando Valley on the way to Pasadena. Records were broken there as well. And while Phoenix (where I reside now) broke records for September 6, the city's 113 degree reading cannot match the 121 degrees you poor people were suffering in California (and ours didn't come w

While the person you're asking for is correct on issues of feminism and LBGT, she is only partially correct on the slavery question. While the Old Testament specifically supports the concept of slavery with the New Testament being at best, neutral on the subject, it does not support the concept of *racial slavery*. That concept didn't occur until long after the Bible was written and canninized.

Is Buddhism evil? Is Judaism evil? Is atheism evil? Are the sciences evil? If you're going to ask about Christianity (and there are some very legitimate points against it), you must also ask the same question about other beliefs, both religious and nonreligious. And, as Nightingale correctly points out, you have to have a way to both define and measure evil. The Bible itself is very contradict

Beth wrote in part: "The only Constitutional crisis we had was when the SCOTUS inserted itself into a political question by ruling on hanging chads." Not true. Nobody today is around to remember this, but in 1876, the election ended in a virtual tie between Republican Rutherford B. Hayes and Democrat Samuel B. Tilden. The victory went to Rutherford B. Hayes when the Republicans ag

Feeling nasty myself, I think the best hope for Mr. Bundy is that he gets a bad case of COVID-19. That just might (maybe not) teach him a lesson.

Petty those beard and tie regulations may be (and they are), but they let faithful church members (supposedly) know who else is a faithful church member. If memory serves, some conservative Jewish groups require their male members to grow beards. And, again, it's done for the same reason. As humans, we really have a problem with seeing all human beings as our brothers and sisters so we focus o

Roe V. Wade wasn't decided until January 1973 so it wouldn't have affected 1960s-era Mormons. Even after that, as noted above, for several years, it was only Roman Catholics who complained about murdering babies, etc. It wasn't until 1979 and the late Paul Wierich looking for a wedge issue to bring more people to conservative thinking that evangelical Protestants began to protest against abortion

Brother of Jerry wrote in part: "Unconditional love is nowhere in the scriptures, and seems to me to be a rather recent, and by no means universal, addition to the Christian lexicon." If I'm not mistaken, that teaching actually started with the Catholics and possibly with liberation theology--it's what the Jesuits were teaching me in high school during the late 1970s and early 198

There will always be the potential for cheating no matter which way you vote, whether it's at the voting booth, on your computer, or through the postal mails. As a totally blind person, I have definitely experienced what can happen in the voting booth, especially when the voting machines were not accessible to me. I have had poll workers tell me how I should vote, and I've never known if I dis

I did some quick checking, and while I didn't find the subject requirements in any current regulations, I couldn't find when they were taken out, either or why. I do know they were there, and I did find lawsuits against the FCC for not allowing commercial traffic in the amateur radio bands (they were dismissed), but I was unable to find out anything about 4).

It was in his writings. The roll of polygamy in Mormonism and his refusal to allow Emma to behave the same way and his justification of that dismissalin D&C 158 (I think that's right) pretty much sums up Mr. Smith's view of women. In the book of Mormon, the written belief that blacks were the children of Cain very much suggests a hatred of African-americans, if unconsciously. Yes, it is tr

I think the biggest thing that has helped the First World countries (the U.S., Canada, western Europe, Israel, and Australia) control their population rates was the advances in birth control; namely, the development of the birth control pill. By using these pills, a lot of women, especially middle-class women, were able to do a much better job of family planning, since the pill allowed them to ha

Waitangi wrote in part: "The US policy in WW2 was very simple. Let your economic rivals destroy each other, then step in as savior. Make films and books describing how you are that savior, send out missionaries with the same message. Also break up the British Empire and take over its ready made English speaking markets." Wrong on all counts. FDR wanted to get involved in the Europ

I think that Joseph Smith was a self-centered and destructive person. I get the impression that he believed that other people were put in this world to serve himand his needs without him having to reciprocate in kind. He hated women and blacks. The real tragedy is that there are a lot of human beings who will follow thugs such as the late Mr. Smith, thinking that he will lead them to salvation wh

Unless I'm mistaken, the only "vaccine" out there now is one developed by the Russians and hurriedly put on the market by their dictator, Vladamir Putin, who claims it cured one of his daughters (sic). The WHO is reportedly in talks with the Russians to get samples of this vaccine for testing. From all accounts I've read and heard (from NPR and other sources), this vaccine developed by

With the exception of 4), you are quite correct. It was under 4) that the ACLU sued (and I think rightfully so, for while I agree that it is not wise to discuss the topics you mentioned with whom you mentioned, the U.S. government shouldn't be telling licensees that they *can't* discuss these topics). While I don't remember 3) in your list, having bans on that kind of trading over the air make
