I briefly talked with Hans at the conference. I also wanted to know his status, and I wanted to know in a completely unambiguous manner. So, I began by defining a rigorous definition of "Mormon". I said... "My definition of 'Mormon' is someone who is listed as a member in the records of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, AND ALSO believes that Thomas Monson is a

Tom As you know, there is a "preponderance of evidence" suggesting that resignation does not remove a person from their count of 15+ million members-- it merely moves them to an "unknown address" ward, but with an additional annotation on the record that does not effect their overall count of 15+ million. This "preponderance of evidence" has been discussed in thi

What I don't understand is... ...how an SP in any old obscure stake can make a decision (such as an excommunication decision) that is binding on all other bishops, SP's, and even AA's in all other parts of the organization, instead of their decisions being limited to only the portion they reside over. And in the case of women, a lone bishop can bind the entire church via these proceedings.

Since you are posting at this site, I will consider that you are of LDS background, but currently having a faith crisis of some sort. There is a logical progression in Mormon theology that I believe suggests a safe course of action for folks such as yourself. I will begin with the premise that two foundational LDS teachings are true, and then logically proceed to a surprising conclusion of

Very few people have sufficient critical thinking skills to be willing to examine the "reality" evidence to that extent. There are, obviously, exceptions to the generalizations I posted on. But they are fairly rare, in my opinion. Nevin Pratt

I have concluded that for all beliefs that are not scientifically established, emotion forms the initial belief patterns. Then once the belief is formed, the person will look for evidence to support their belief that they have already established. And with, for example, a TBM, their single greatest "evidence" is often seen as the emotion (believed to be the "Holy Ghost") that

Remember, according to published statistics (by the Pew Research Center, and others), atheism and agnosticism are the fastest growing segment of the population of the Unites States (as well as the world). And if that trend continues, it is likely only a matter of time before that group of people have dominant control of the majority of legislative matters. And if that happens, I believe it

In the mid to late 1800's, there was a distinct difference understood within the church between the "Kingdom of God" and the "Church of God". Today (as well as at the inception of the church, during early to mid 1800's) they are/were considered to be synonyms (two different names for the same thing), but during the mid to late 1800's (from the period just before Joseph Smith'

Help me to understand. Wikipedia tells me: ***** Sacrament Meeting lasts 70 minutes-- I presume this is the meeting that everyone attends (all ages, men and women). So this meeting takes one large room-- the chapel (with a possible overflow area). Then, Sunday School is split by age, each going into their own smaller classroom for their age, and lasting 40 minutes (according to Wikipedia

As one example (of many) on lds.org, I notice the following: Meetinghouse: 3599 Orchard Drive, Bountiful, UT Wards and Meeting Time: Orchard 7th - 1:00 PM Orchard 5th - 11:00 AM Orchard 6th - 11:00 AM In this example, are the Orchard 5th and 6th wards really being combined into (effectively) one ward? Or how is it handled logistically (two different wards meeting in the same building a

Hi sb: I live in Davis County-- on the south end. The church next door contains two wards: (1) Orchard 1st, and (2) Orchard 2nd. At least I think that is true-- I'm not really sure. Nor am I really sure where the ward boundaries are. I'm also pretty sure that there used to be three wards here, that there's now a missing "Orchard 12th" ward. I don't know if you would be willing

OP quoted Matt Riggs with "Each mission is shrinking and all missions are closing areas. It is a natural result of the “wave” having crested and settling back in at a “new normal”.". Then, Outsider said: "Instead, the peak was 88,000 and it's down to 84,000 now. TSCC knew it wasn't going to last, so they didn't create that many new missions." OK, my wife made the

Just curious-- anyone know of any specific and concrete prophecies made by any of the "Big 15" during the last 100 years that the LDS church themselves now consider to be completely fulfilled?

The 6% temple divorce rate often quoted by the church is based on old 1981 research data and was published as “Religion and Family Formation” in Review of Religious Research June 1985, Vol. 26:4 by authors Tim Heaton and Kristen Goodman. Heaton’s co-author was from the Church Correlation Department, hardly an unbiased source. Furthermore, as has been aptly demonstrated by Steve Benson an

The following are my own definitions of all of the following. I could potentially be swayed to change one or some of these definitions at some point in the future, but they are my own definitions at this time, and represent what I mean when I use the following words and phrases. I don't really care if somebody else has a different definition for any of these words, but if they *do* have a diffe

When I was in high-school, I knew a girl whose boyfriend asked her to marry him. She didn't know what to do, and she asked me what I thought. I said, "It's simple. You either want to marry him, or you don't want to marry him, or you are not sure if you do or not". "If you WANT to marry him", I continued, "then marry him". "If you do NOT want to marry

I don't think your thought experiments are going to do anything. From a TBM perspective, here are answers to your thought experiments: 1. TBM's are not JW's. TBM's are widely taught to first "study it out in your mind", and go as far as you can with the knowledge you've already been given, and then go to the Lord if needed. Thus, the obvious choice is to go with the antibiotic, be
