For what it's worth, I'm familiar with Spokane, and it is NOT a place I would want to waste two years of my life.

Is there a mercy rule for these debates. Tapir Dan is taking a pounding here. Not that I'm implying Jeremy should let up.

And an eraser. Seems like God could have done a better job getting the bom and d&c revelations right the first time.

Why does God need a survey department? Can't he just tell the prophet what to do instead of wasting member's time and the church's money with all the surveys they send out.

I wish I had run into you on my mission. It would have made the last 20 years of my life a lot better.

Fair enough, but just to be clear, I'm referring to internal feelings of respect, not outward appearance. I am still (generally) respectful towards people I don't respect.

That's a good insight. If tbms can at least recognize there are legitimate issues that could cause someone to doubt the church, I could respect that. It's the fingers in the ears that drives me nuts.

Yes, it's a good point. I still remember the visceral reaction I had when I first started reading material on mormonthink - not a pleasant experience realizing everything I had based my life on was a fraud. I do have to allow people time to digest the information in the ces letter, particularly when it is new to them.

Okay. So it appears that at one extreme, we agree that NMBLA gets no respect. Let's suppose, for the sake of argument, that at the other extreme are individuals such as George Washington Carver who work tirelessly and selflessly for the betterment of mankind and for whom I have the utmost respect. Between these two extremes of respect is a continuum. My concern is that in my mind, I would i

I realize this is taking out to the extreme, but your statement would appear to condone members of the national man boy love association. Personally, I do think there are beliefs that merit no respect.

I'm trying to keep an open mind on this, particularly since I have never had strong "spiritual" experiences, and therefore I cannot relate well to those who have. However, I am concerned that I would inadvertently or subconsciously lose respect for a tbm who continued to believe unquestioningly after reading the letter to a CES director. Personally, I find the letter to be very pers

I'm glad tscc hasn't been a bad experience for you. However, my guess is that you haven't broken your spouse's heart by sharing your disbelief and then watched your marriage fall apart, nor have you watched your kids cry because they think they won't have an eternal family because of you. For me, the biggest impact of tscc has been the deterioration of relationships with loved ones due to my di

In the stakes where I have lived, they have always enlisted member policeman to keep the order when general authorities visit. On the off chance there was any doubt, no, the policemen were not compensated for their services.

I'm considering a job in California north of Oakland. The job would pay $120k, which seemed pretty decent until I saw the cost of the homes. It would cost at least $600k to buy a mediocre home in the area, something that just wouldn't be possible on the salary I would earn. I was particularly surprised at the home prices given that the median household income in the area is less than $50k. Fo

I thought 3 wards per building was the norm. It is in my area, which is outside of Utah. However, at least in our area they have adequate parking.

You bring up a good point. There's been a couple times I've posted here and the responses were way more judgmental than anything I'd experienced at church. Ultimately, I'm not too concerned about a few ignorant comments from anonymous individuals who made incorrect assumptions, but still, it was disappointing.

I served in Cordoba during my mission. It was an awesome place, and I loved it there. However, I'm pretty confident that of the 95,000 members the church claims the temple will serve, the vast majority are inactive.

And I just wanted to share with everyone what an uplifting experience it was. It is a privilege to clean the Lord's house, and I'm so grateful that instead of having competent professionals clean the church at very low cost, tscc gives members the opportunity to be edified by scraping unknown substances off the floor and wiping down sacred toilet seats. The spirit was SOOOOO strong today! I

At the time of Lincoln, all whites were racist, at least by today's standards. Lincoln reflected the views of the time, but in spite of those biases was able to see that slavery was repugnant. Although I don't agree with Lincoln's racist statements, I'm willing to view Lincoln tolerantly since he was a man who was consistently trying to do the right thing. I'm less tolerant of by's statements

Brother Jake saved my testimony. I had a lot of doubts about the church, but brother Jake's clear and concise explanations took care of them. For those with concerns about topics such as polygamy, tithing, and church discipline, I would highly recommend watching brother Jake's YouTube videos so he can help you understand that tscc is a good, wholesome, and completely logical organization.

I assume your post title is a play on words from Les Miserables. Unfortunately, I don't think our revolution would be any more successful than the revolution in the play, and the next song we would sing would be Empty Chairs at Empty Tables. However, I share your frustration.

I still attend every week. My wife is still very tbm, so it's what I do on my part to help keep the peace. Sacrament meeting isn't too bad since I can interact (reverently) with my wife and kids. The last two hours can be painfully boring. I usually read journal of discourses during Sunday school and priesthood. Overall it's not too interesting, but every now and then I find a real gem which rein

Thanks all for the feedback. I had the conversation with my wife last night regarding the harmful impact of the church on our kids. Not surprisingly, it didn't go very well, at least in the sense that she got upset with me. However, she did agree to read the letter to a CES director. I'm pretty thrilled about that. It would be great if she could at least understand why I have doubts about th

My wife is upset with some changes the school district is making, and I agree with her that the changes are definitely bad for the kids and puts them at a significant disadvantage in getting in to college. However, I think that what tscc is doing to kids is far worse than what the school district is proposing, and I plan on having that conversation with my wife tonight. In your opinion, what a
