I dunno about the Mormons, but the JWs are backing away from the cross. IN FACT, they maintain that JC, was NOT crucified on a cross, he was tortured to death on a torture stick, aka a wooden pole, NOT a cross. So why wasn't he crucified on a cross? Because a CROSS is a PAGAN symbol, and why would Christ allow himself to die on a PAGAN symbol? Anyway, the JWs do not believe Christ died

I like Kurt Vonnegut's explanation best. "The meaning of life is to get each other through "all this," whatever "all this" turns out to be. So let's do it. Lois

Where I live they have yoga classes specially tailored for older people. They even have "chair yoga" where you never get out of your chair. Mostly it is glorified stretching exercises, but definitely mostly women.

This sounds like excellent advice. My two cents worth is this: Make as many female FrieNDS as you can. Let them know you are interested in nothing but FRIENDSHIP. You can ask them for romantic advice, but show no romantic interest in them. Your goal is friendship and friendship only. That, is until one of them shows romantic interest in you. Let Her lead the way. Don't even hold her

Okay. I will try to share a memory of Randy. The memory is clear, but I am not real organized, so what follows may be a bit scattered. I contacted SL Cabbee, because I knew he was a cab driver in SLC with an interest in Mormonism and there were a few places I wanted him to drive me to, and maybe we could visit with each other along the way. Among other things, I wanted him to drive me t

I think AA was his religion. He was a devout follower and I respected him for it.

The older I get, the more I get hit on, so go figured. Only be warned: If in you elder years, you find yourself attracting people of the male persuasion just like you did in high school, they are probably not all that interested in romance or even sex. They are almost certainly looking for a purse or a nurse. I'm not endowed with either of these things, so with no hard feelings, and lot

I won't have a drink with you. We will not drink together. How fitting. I met up with him in SLC. I wanted him to take me on a tour of where some obscure Mormon happenings happened. Instead, we ended up at the Lighthouse bookstore, where they seemed to know him well. In my opinion, he was a tortured soul, with a lot of conflicts. He liked to talk about his association with various au

I have a unique reaction to John Dehlin simply because he bears such a strong resemblance to Paul K. Dehlin, JD's great uncle and my next store neighbor, a hardworking store keeper who was a devout Mormon, but did not have much time for philosophical discussions. He believed what he believed and that was it. Paul Dehlin was a very good man, who made a huge difference in my life, not so much b

I don't know if "Latter-day saints" get excited about tragic world events, but end-of-the-worlders of any religious persuasion glory in such things. I grew up listening to such bloody drivel again and again and again on a daily basis. People came to our house at least three times a week to hear my father tell it again and again and again. My father gloried in seeing the distress

I am reading Tara Westover's book "Educated" and her mother, LaRee Westover's book "Educating" at the same time. I found LaRee's book very enlightening, and I was convinced that Tara got a splendid education from being homeschooled by her mother in a home that contained a mountain of books, and a computer that gave access to the internet, once the internet was a thing. LaR

Lead up to it gently, and be ready to take no for an answer. Like say, "Sometimes I wish we could be more than just friends." If she says, "Maybe we could try being enemies," then you have your answer and it is time to back off.

Yes, I looked at photos of the temple, and it would fit right in on the Dream Mine mountain.

Of course getting your picture taken back in the day was a grueling experience for any child. But these children had another reason to be dour. They were ridiculed and made fun of throughout their childhoods because their father's Dream Mine, just wouldn't come through. Emma, Bishop Koyle's wife often said she wished she had never heard of the Dream Mine, because it had brought the family

Please stay with me, sunstoned, as I pursue this thread. I am sure you know more about the actual mine itself than I do. I know about "The Dream Mine Story" and the effect it had on so many people. But I am learning more, as I carry on with my Deep Dive. When I come up for air, I will post again. Lois

Good point, Mrs. Lot. There is a sameness to all end-of-the-world cults, whether they are LDS based or not. And there is a sameness to all their leaders. Claiming to know the details about the endtimes will get you a lot of followers and a sense of your own importance that nothing else can equal. One end-of-the-world guru known as Mother God, whose unburied corpse was draped in Christma

My interest in the Dream Mine (if "interest" is the right word) was reawakened by the Chad Daybell matter. Chad Daybell was raised in Springville, Utah. He married and put down roots in the Springville area. He worked at the Evergreen Cematery in Springville, Utah, where my father NCP is buried. There is NO WAY, simply NO WAY that Chad Daybell did not know about the Dream Mine.

I thought it was Robert Burns who said that. It must've have been someone before John Steinbeck, because Steinbeck named one of hit novels "Of mice and men."

Thank you, Tom, I love that song. It speaks out my sentiments and makes it all so poetic. For some reason, it reminds me of a tour I took of an old house in Florida, whose original owner was richrichrich. He lived in the gilded age when there was no income tax, and rich people were a different breed. Vanderbilts! Andrew Carnegie! I forget the other rich families -- J.P. Morgan. All t

Okay. New year's day. What better time for me to tell my very own Dream Mine Story. I am not a very organized person, so this thread is going to wander all over the place. I am very verbose. You might say you will have to mine this thread, sift through a lot of ore in order to get to the gold. The Dream Mine wasn't supposed to turn out like that. The mine would be richrichrich. There

You are the teacher's pet. When I first heard the story of Jesse Knight's Humbug mine, I thought Bishop Koyle was copying Jesse. Only Jesse had his dream two years after Bishop Koyle had his. So there's thaat. Even Jesse didn't believe in his dream. That's why he called his mine the Humbug Mine. But the Humbug turned out to be real. There were several mining activities at the time th

Ahh, shucks. The Dream Mine story, I think might shed light on the Joseph Smith story. A lot of the same themes. Hidden treasure guarded by dead people! Strange visitors from another planet! Great riches guaranteed to those who are worthy! God's one true prophet telling you the way it was, the way it is, and the way it's gonna be! I haven't thought about it much in years. But now it's

The first wife would also very likely be the only legally recognized wife. This would give her a certain extra status. On the other hand, the first wife wouldn't necessarily be the favorite wife, so there's that.

It's something I feel I must do, and now I have found the right forum to do it. I am in my 60s now, but I feel like I'm living my childhood all over. The feelings that I had at that time are still there, more vivid than anything that is happening to me now. The Dream Mine dominated my childhood, and not in a good way. It was all wrapped up in the end of the world, which would be gruesome be

Samuel W. Taylor, bar none, my favorite Mormon historian, wrote about his father's, John W. Taylor's, excommunication for engaging in post-manifesto polygamy. John W. was one of the Twelve. The apostles were deeply divided over this issue -- the issue of polygamy. Some thought that we MUST carry on with polygamy no matter what, because polygamy was the centerpiece of Mormonism. You couldn't

Bishop Koyle, of The Dream Mine claimed that two of the three Nephites visited him in a dream. Later a third Nephite joined The Work at the mine. His name was Al Sinclair. Everybody knew that Al Sinclair was really one of the Three Nephites. Al denied this vigorously, but everyone knew that that is who he was. "Al" was surely short for Alma, and Sinclair was really St. Clair, w
