To quote Billy Joel: "I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints; the sinners are much more fun, only the good die young."

Good suggestion! Here's one from Wikipedia, always a pretty good place to start. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxytocin

My wife and I were talking about our "wonderful" temple wedding recently: Her sister and husband were in attendance and they pulled another witness out of the hall. No family members could come since they didn't have recommends. And being excluded alienated them even more. "Doing it right" didn't have any positive affects on anyone who couldn't come. We've been talking about

I believe the only true religion can be defined as: you and your relationship with God, the Savior and the Holy Spirit.

When you give someone a heartfelt hug, both of your bodies release a little bit of the "feel good" hormone Oxytocin. When a mother nurses her baby, this intimate contact causes both of them to release this hormone and helps them bond to each other. When two people without garments hug, there is a lot of skin to skin contact. This releases a lot of oxytocin and promotes closeness with th

They want to instill fear in your mind. Are you sure you really want to leave the church? A couple weeks ago a woman from my old ward informed me that a mutual acquaintance had passed away. He was 94. She said: "We're all getting older, you know." Translation (without benefit of urim and thummim): "So you better quit goofing off and get back to church..."

I was a bishop for six years and I think it is abominable what bishops ask people. I would not do it. I didn't like being a Judge in Israel. It's just plain wrong for anyone to do that! I've already apologized to some people for assuming that role. Wish I could have a do over. ugh.

I used to work with an LDS guy who said his mother got out of school, fell in love and got married in the temple. Within a few months her husband tragically died. They had no kids and she was not pregnant when he died. A couple years later she met a great nonmember guy and got married. After awhile he became interested in the church but was bothered by the bizarre doctrine that any children they

When I was a kid my mom was cooking something and using unsweetened chocolate. "I want some!" I said. "Ah, no you don't," she answered. "Sure I do, it's chocolate!" "Okay," she smiled, dipped in a teaspoon and spooned it into my mouth. Nastiest tasting stuff in the world. But that's the only kind of chocolate I would recommend staying away from. But

This is the default reply when you ask a doctrinal question in the church that has no convenient cut and paste answer. "It will all get figured out during the millennium." "Yeah, sure it will..." What questions did YOU have that were answered in this way?

Tithing is part of the Old Testament. Christ fulfilled the old law. He mentions tithing 3 times in the NT, always in association with the hypocrites. If tithing really was important I think he would have said something positive about it. The book of Malachi is a gold mine for the church and any other church that wants to make money. "You wouldn't want to be burned as stubble would you?&quo

Several years ago my daughter was going to give a talk on modesty. I decided to go to the New Testament for references. Guess what, there are none. That surprised me. There are also references to the apostles out fishing and it sounds like they didn't take any great pains to cover up on warm days. Well, what about "virtue" someone might say? Except the word didn't have the same meani

I believe that Christ is our Savior, the only begotten Son of God. He atoned for our sins. He loves us. He is I AM. I believe Jehovah is a cruel, heartless demiurge - a fallen angel, also known as Moloch, who hijacked Israel. There are many reasons I believe this. Here is just one. I AM gave Israel the Ten Commandments. Under Jehovah's tutelage, those simple 10 commandments grew into the Tal

Except much of the work is just busy work. Home teaching and visiting teaching alone must take millions of hours a year and yields very little in the way of tangible results. I did home teaching for 38 years and did not bring anyone back into activity. Must not have had enough faith, I guess; except I only know 1 person who was brought back into activity by home teaching. This is extremely ineffi

I've seen Mormons wear white T shirts over the top of garments and then another shirt over the top of that. Too many layers...ridiculous!

142. Re: Give
They have it totally backwards. God doesn't need anything from you. It's not about how much you are willing to give or sacrifice. It's about how much love you are willing to receive from God.

Spirituality is about your relationship with God. Religion is about control. People who profess to speak for God use religion to control you. A prophet is one who speaks to God for another. You don't need anyone to stand between you and God.

My belief is probably considered weird by Mormons and non-Mormons. I believe we have a Heavenly Mother (Just one). I also believe she is the Holy Spirit. Why? Well, a lot of reasons, but in the Apocrypha there is a book called the Book of the Wisdom of Solomon. In chapter 7 of that book it says, it part: [22] for wisdom, the fashioner of all things, taught me. For in her there is a spirit that i

Well, consider: If you believe in God (and I do), and that he created everything in the universe, put order in everything from the motions of atoms to the motions of galaxies, and everything besides that...isn't it kind of crazy that he would care what kind of underwear you have on?

I'm being somewhat of a subversive trouble maker, making comments on LDS blogs. Sometimes the comments get posted, sometimes I get a perpetual "Your comment is awaiting moderation." I figure at some point the Strengthening the Members Committee will get a complaint or two and call my Stake President. He will want me to come and talk to him, which I will gladly do. When I refuse to recan

Many people are guilty of what is known as "confirmation bias." They start to read something and if it doesn't agree with what they already believe, they toss it aside. If it does agree with what they believe, they read the article and think it's great. People need to realize "Hey, maybe I should read the other side. Maybe I'm wrong. Critical thinking skills - the best thing I lea

I agree. Unless the family sacrifices, God is not going to do his will? That doesn't even make sense (for those of us on the outside). Whose will is he going to do? I know a lot of people who left the church have become fed up with God too. I don't blame them. I still believe in God, just not the critical Mormon God. I believe in a God who gives unconditional love. Pleading with God do
