Jesus washed the disciples’ feet, and the members get to scrub toilets. It’s spiritually very similar.

And no, I don’t mean the scripture. The restoration of the Casa Bonita restaurant cost $40 million. There’s no way that Trey Parker and Matt Stone could have bankrolled that project without the truckloads of money they got from the Book of Mormon.

Sacrificing their firstborn would prove to god that they’re serious, but it would also reduce the “children of record” on the ward’s rolls. I wonder if it would result in a net gain.

I actually wasn’t aware of most of the historical and doctrinal issues when I left. I gave up on religion because I could no longer accept the concept of god that is found in abrahamic religions, nor could I accept the idea of eternal punishment or eternal reward. Learning about the history of TSCC certainly reinforced my decision to leave.

From my perspective, the sacrament is a farce, the priesthood is a farce, and there is nothing sacred about sacrament meeting, but if you do consider it sacred, you’re cheating yourself by engaging in behavior that is completely distracting. I assume the young men on their phones would have rather have been somewhere else doing something else, but if they truly believe, they’re really miss

Counting “members” until they are 110 years old (if the church loses track of them) is not just a rumor, it has been confirmed a few times, including once by Merrill J. Bateman.

If I were to guess, of the 17 million, At least a million (probably more) are dead. If they lose track of you, you’re still considered a member until you’re 110 years old. Probably a couple of hundred thousand have actually gone through the effort to officially resign (including me). I’m sure a couple of million have joined another church or actively participate in another faith tr

I have long suspected that moderate drinkers had better health not due to their moderate drinking per se, but because they did other things (eating, for example) in moderation. Avoiding excess in many things can be physically and emotionally healthy.

When I was eight years old my family was living in Tulsa, OK. One day, my dad was told that the company he was working for was going to close their Tulsa office, so he’d be transferred to another city. We were told that we’d soon be moving to Albany, Chicago, Denver, Houston, or Los Angeles. Eventually, they asked him to take a position in Denver. My dad worked in the Denver office until he

It seems (at least anecdotally) that many of the people eager to move to Idaho might as well be Mormon.

The BoM is full of white people, just check out Arnold Friberg’s illustrations. And Jesus was definitely white, you can tell by seeing his portrait in any Mormon meeting house.

I noticed the brethren backing away from the “Christ’s return is neigh” narrative as the 1990s progressed. In the 60s, 70s, and 80s, it was a constant scare tactic, but I think that some of the leaders realized that it was turning into a “boy who cried wolf” situation.

Missionaries, and mission presidents, learn early to inflate numbers. Too bad they can’t inflate the one number that could actually help them: $$

So…he knows of a couple who did OK after marrying at age 12. Well, I know of people who made it home safe when driving while intoxicated-I guess we should oppose DUI laws.

“If the JoD wasn’t accurate, why did ChurchCo publish it???” When I was a teen (in the 70s) it was a status symbol among Mormons to have the JoD. When I visited the home of a stake leader or bishop, it was common to see it on the bookshelf.

I have seen similar examples, and I’m sure many people here have. Sometimes, kind, sincere people rise in the ranks of TSCC, but so often it’s the people who seem nice, but have become experts in justifying their questionable (at best) actions, that become leaders.

They did that BS maneuver with me, but it’s meaningless. Once they receive your email, you’re legally no longer a member. No matter what they say, it’s not a “local ecclesiastical matter.” Once I received the BS email from SLC, I responded, and I didn’t pull any punches. I called them out on their dishonesty (they knew I was no longer a member). I also scolded them for the lack of

There is probably no way to have records removed. I resigned my membership via email, so I am legally not a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but I suspect that they still have records for me.
