The thread about the Second Coming being postponed to 2050 (https://www.exmormon.org/phorum/read.php?2,2484376) reminded me of story from my youth. I posted it here a few years ago, but at my age, I tend to repeat myself. It was during Ward Conference. A Stake leader (I believe he was a member of the Stake presidency) taught our Sunday school class that day. He began the class by walking up to

Those of us who are of a certain age (I’m in my 60s) grew up in a Mormon church where we were constantly reminded that the Savior’s return was nigh, even at the door. Every significant event in world or church history was a “sign” of Jesus’ return. I personally think that Y2K was the point where church leaders realized that they had cried wolf too many times.

Some memories have the potential to be vivid, even after decades. Like you, I appreciate the fact that I never had to participate in war (like my father and brother who were both combat veterans), but my mission is a profound memory. Fortunately, I haven’t had a dream about it for many years, but I regret giving up two years of my youth, and experiencing physical, mental, and emotional damage,

The only people less likely than the sheriff to do anything are Bundy’s Mormon leaders. 12th Article of Faith? Never heard of it.

It’s truly a rare occurrence that anyone asks my religious orientation. Once or twice, I referred to myself as a “born again agnostic.”

I’m retired now, but I was a software engineer for 30+ years. I can attest to the fact that computers are, indeed, of the devil. But Satan paid well, so I have no complaints.

Stan Marsh: “Wait. Mormons actually know this story, and they still believe that Joseph Smith was a prophet?!” https://youtu.be/W4NemVO4JL0 Stan’s quote is at about 3:15.

Isaiah 4 1 In that day seven women will take hold of one man and say, "We will eat our own food and provide our own clothes; only let us be called by your name. Take away our disgrace!"

Religions were born from an attempt to explain things that seemed to be inexplainable. For example: why does the sun appear to rise in the east and set in the west? Ra takes it across the sky in his canoe. Scientific discovery has often been resisted (or worse) by religious leaders (Galileo certainly comes to mind). There is a common mindset that faith in things that can’t be proven is morally

Fireworks are traumatizing to some combat veterans. It’s a sad irony that a celebration of this nation’s independence can cause such distress to some of those who defended it.

I’d choose the story of Job. God put his faithful servant through unspeakable horrors just to win a bet with Satan.

I’m old enough to remember when official LDS advice was to never go into debt except for a house, and (in some cases) education. I live in a fairly affluent area. A year or so before the 2008 crash, I remember chatting with my bishop. He said that he was very concerned with the fact that so many of the ward members were living so close to the edge financially. There had been a lot of mcmansi

“I see a train wreck forming.” I agree. Rusty just seems determined to outdo (in temples) or undo (“I’m a Mormon” and “Meet the Mormons”) his two predecessors (Gordo and Tommy). Maybe he’s just trying to settle old grudges. Mormons used to take some pride in being a “peculiar” people, but now so many aspects of mormonism have been watered down or removed. Temples are eve

“Sadly other organizations have taken up that position in their lives.” If you think it’s sad that other organizations are influencing Mormon youth, you must think that those organizations are worse than the Mormon Church itself. What are some of the organizations to which you are referring?

In generations past, for much of the world, going to the temple once a year could have been considered regular attendance. If you only attended a few times in a lifetime, a long session probably felt appropriate. Now that temples are as rare as Starbucks, more people can attend regularly. The old marathon sessions would be a hard sell now.

I think your concerns for this boy are valid. On my mission, I saw the effects on a few of the “Elders” who had grown up somewhat isolated in small towns, and we started our missions at the ripe old age of 19. I only know of one who gave up and was sent home, but I witnessed several people struggle. I knew one guy from Idaho who told me that he had only seen one black person in his life be

And no, I don’t mean the scripture. The restoration of the Casa Bonita restaurant cost $40 million. There’s no way that Trey Parker and Matt Stone could have bankrolled that project without the truckloads of money they got from the Book of Mormon.

Sacrificing their firstborn would prove to god that they’re serious, but it would also reduce the “children of record” on the ward’s rolls. I wonder if it would result in a net gain.
