I like this quote: "this book offers a valuable behind-the-scenes look at the faith, as told by Mormons themselves" In other words, you'll get the white washed history and outright lies that every investigator and member gets. That sounds valuable to me.

When I first got back from my mission I was applying for sales jobs. I listed my mission as sales experience. The woman I interviewed with and who hired me, said it was the mission experience that got me the job. She said if I could sell religion that I could sell anything. I also had it backfire on me when another interviewer said he would never hire a Mormon because they think they're bet

If you really want to learn about it, you should watch the documentary titled "8: The Mormon Proposition". It does a great job of explaining the whole thing.

Statements like that have CULT written all over them. That along with "when the prophet speaks, the thinking has been done"

Mark Twain read it. This is his review: The book seems to be merely a prosy detail of imaginary history, with the Old Testament for a model; followed by a tedious plagiarism of the New Testament. The author labored to give his words and phrases the quaint, old-fashioned sound and structure of our King James’s translation of the Scriptures; and the result is a mongrel—half modern glibness,

This is news to me. I've been out of TSCC for a long time but back in the day women were told having kids and keeping the husband happy were her primary goals in life.

I was in Korea in the early 80's. The apartments we had in Seoul were decent. Nothing fancy, but livable. I spent half my mission out in the more remote parts of the country and that was a different story. The toilets were outhouses and in winter it was miserable. The bathroom had no hot water so for showering it meant heating water on a stove and pouring it over you. In winter the ba

I was a deacon and we were never told who gets to take the sacrament and who doesn't. It was up the person to decide if they were worthy to take it. That was a long time ago but I can't imagine that the bishop is now telling 12 year old kids who gets to take the sacrament.

In Hinkleys now infamous interview with Larry King, he admitted that he had never seen or actually heard Jesus. But that he had inspiration that he attributed to a special relationship with Jesus. Guess he wasn't that special of a witness.

TSCC has always said that polygamy is an "eternal principle" and will be practiced in the CK. So yes, if a man is sealed to more than one woman, he will have multiple wives in the CK. I think he can also marry additional wives as well. What the women want doesn't matter. Even in the CK it's a mans world.

Mormons think they're the only ones who really "feel the spirit". You can tune to any of the religious channels on TV and see the exact same thing happen. The TV preacher will call the emotional person to repentance and in the end the person accepts Jesus as their savior and supposedly that persons life is changed. What these missionaries experienced happens 1000 times a day i

These are the characteristics of cult. See how many apply to TSCC: The group displays excessively zealous and unquestioning commitment to its leader and (whether he is alive or dead) regards his belief system, ideology, and practices as the Truth, as law. ‪ Questioning, doubt, and dissent are discouraged or even punished. ‪ Mind-altering practices (such as meditation, chanting, s

This reminds me of the senior quotes in our high school yearbook. Under the picture of each member of the senior class, that person could have a quote. Most were a line from a popular song, or from a poem etc. But there were some ultra TBM's in that class and of course they had to quote the BOM or the "Prophet". One in particular was the bishops daughter and her quote was "Wh

Home Teaching / Visiting Teaching was the worst. Nobody wanted to do it, and nobody wanted to be visited. Every month it was a mad scramble at the end of the month to arrange appointments and accept appointments. That should have been a sign that no one wanted to participate in that program.

There's also a T shirt that I've seen a lot of missionaries and members wearing in their blog posts. It says something like: "I'm a Mormon. Know it, Live it, Love it"

I'm not sure you'd describe it as freaky, but more of the normal Mormon BS. My aunt died, she was very TBM. Of course the funeral was at the ward. At one point, the service was opened up to allow anyone who wanted to give a remembrance to do so. This old guy stood up and spoke about her for about 30 seconds, and then spent the next 5 minutes bearing his testimony that the church was true. H

This is what happens when you make it a requirement that every young man serve a mission. You get guys like this who are simply going because they've been told to. Not because they actually care for people and want to make a difference in their lives. (however misguided that might be in the case of missionaries)

I saw one where the kid says he hopes he doesn't get sent anywhere humid because he can't deal with humidity. He opens the letter and he's being sent to Florida. He was definitely unhappy.

This really pisses me off. This woman has no idea what the reality of being a missionary really is. She doesn't have to knock on doors, obey an endless set of rules, live in bad housing, etc etc. She gets to live in the mission home and basically hang out all day, which is a completely different experience. These kids who want to go home were fed the lie that it will be "the best

I'm surprised that Monson isn't on twitter. Maybe he's afraid that he'll look bad since he'll never have the number of followers that the pope has.

Yes, this is a frustrating story. Abstinence is a very difficult standard to maintain. And if the girl cant maintain it, she feels like a failure. That leads to low self esteem which leads to a whole host of other problems. The sexual assault comment is ridiculous. Girls who wind up victims of sexual assault are the ones who had the bad luck of being involved with a creep.

No, she's not. I read an article that said she was asked by her church (Victory Outreach Church) to put on that event.

Missionaries have a very loose definition of miracle. That's done purposely so it can appear that God is directing them in the work of "the one true church"

I have no problem telling people I grew up Mormon and went on a mission. It gives me the opportunity to tell them why I decided to leave. (which they always ask anyway)

I honestly think they send young kids because they're harder to say no to.
