**the URL seems to be blocked** Ex-mo describes his experience returning to the Hill Cumorah Pageant - written in usual (and compelling) Vice style. "And there it was: the fear, which had also been my own fear for a long time. Inside Mormonism, I had been afraid of the outside world. Outside Mormonism, my fear turned into nightmares where I returned to church. Even though I never had t

Using an economist's and sociologist's lens, he gives a broad overview of Mormonism, focusing on Mormon history, ties to Republican party, his family history, rejection

I've always heard it as "The church is perfect, the members are not."

I had a conversation with a TBM on why it's silly to invoke Jesus on the issue of gay marriage (or any number of issues for that matter). We know what Paul thought on the matter. We'll never know what Jesus thought. Personally, I doubt that a radical Palestinian Jew living under Mosaic law and preaching of the coming end times would have cared too much about people convicted of sodomy being ston

Love your username. I'm a huge Philip K. Dick fan. Actually, I've never thought about it until now. His novels' focus on discovering truth and personal identity when living in a world of illusion parallels nicely with the journeys of many people on this board.

http://www.mylifetime.com/movies/escaping-polygamy I just saw the trailer for Lifetime's new docudrama "Escaping Polygamy." As with many reality/documentary shows, it seems to be quite staged much like "Amish Mafia" or anything on MTV. I'm curious if these dramatic midnight rescues do occur, and if so, how frequent are happen. Either way, I definitely plan to set my TiVo

There was no reading in my ward last Sunday. This is just my observation in general.

I've noticed a heightened sensitivity on the matter. There's no full frontal attack on the so-called "gay agenda" as we see with Evangelical preachers. It seems that every statement concerning the church's stance on SSM is paired with another statement reminding people that all people deserve love and respect, or that the church backed anti-discrimination legislation in Utah. Also, t

"conservative hairstyle... relatively short and evenly tapered on the top, back and sides." Every Elder serving in my west coast location is rocking the Robin Thicke and Justin Beiber style haircuts - heavily gelled long on the top with short (nearly shaved) sides and back. I think 90's bowl cuts are coming back.

No mention of it in either the family or YSA ward. The bishopric knows that it generally wouldn't have been well received. There were a large number of members' Facebook profile pictures that went rainbow after the ruling. We also have one women is openly gay.

I'm leaving out details that could be used to positively identify me, including the actual city I'm in, the conditions of my upbringing, where I served a mission, etc. But reading back myself the substance of what I wrote seems pretty clear, at least to me. It's not about rocking the boat. It's about can I craft my own version of Mormon-light that conveniently fits into the life I want. The conse

Just as a side note, this is my third thread. The first concerned me stumbling across LDS-themed pornography (deleted within an hour). The second concerned early LDS-views on abortion (I'm staunchly pro-life, that's a view that took a while to evolve).

Beat away. My "plan" is to simply start the process of not hiding anything that I don't believe is wrong. To live a slightly more "authentic" life as the people on this board like to say. Drinking just happens to be the main topic where I can honestly look at myself and say "Yes. I make an effort to bury this because I worry what some people will think." I'm sure

Never said that my kids wouldn't ever attend. My nevermo wife occasionally comes to SM. I said they wouldn't attend primary (where I don't have influence in what gets taught) or get baptized before they can comprehend what it means. Why I stay? If I had to be completely honestly, I enjoy it. I spend 70 hours a week crunching numbers, running regression tests, compiling code, and thinking in a

This was a decision I made before meeting and marrying my nonmember wife. As with voting, drinking (at least outside the U.S.), and joining the army, they can decide when they're 18.

I hope that through that exploration I can also contribute meaningfully to other discussions on this board. I questioned whether or not I wanted to read and contribute to this board. A lot of the threads come off as whiney, to be perfectly blunt. But the fact of the matter is that I've never been more about knowledgable about my religion (and other religions as well) than in the past two years

I'm taking everything into consideration. I'm going to challenge the hypocrite label a bit, though. I don't think that being an active member who drinks makes you anymore of a hypocrite than an anti-war pacifist who pays U.S. taxes and professes a love of their country. Or an animal rights supporter who indulges occasionally on burgers. I don't believe in one size fits all models of living whe

Not at all. I want to engage in meaningful conversation with all those around me. But if I'm engaging in behavior that I know puts someone else in an uncomfortable position, than I'd prefer not to create that environment. It's exactly my desire to not be a hypocrite that led me to want to be out in the open about by drinking instead of trying to hide it.

The general consensus on the board seems to be to not initiate any discussion. I buy that. Going forward, if the time is right, I plan to crack open a Bud Light or two with my social circle and see where the chips fall. If there is an adverse reaction, I look forward to having a philosophical debate on the spirit of the WoW (keeping a healthy mind and body) versus the updated version created d
