I left over a year ago but my scriptures are still sitting on the shelf. I'd feel weird about giving them to someone else, especially since they have my full name engraved on them, but I also don't want to keep them. What do I do? Recycle them? Update: They made great kindling. Thanks for the suggestions.

Wow, congrats on the degrees! I'm fortunate enough to have lots of financial support from parents, so I'm hoping for the rest of my education to be a challenge but manageably so.

Apostle Mark E. Peterson wrote "Righteous people everywhere also should look to their own neighborhoods to determine to what extent the ‘gay’ people have infiltrated their areas." LDS neighborhoods don't want me there, and I don't want to be there either. Also your argument is completely ignorant of the relationship between socioeconomic status and crime.

My twin brother is on his mission right now, also in South America, and it sounds hard enough for him even though he already had taken 5 years of Spanish classes. His emails feel insincere and full of forced positivity. As far as I'm aware (and I'd be very glad to be wrong) I don't think there's anything you can do. One of my old roommates from BYU was incredibly suicidal on her mission and sh

27 units of math and science is impressive! I'm planning on taking 27 units next fall and I'm technically a science major (wildlife science technician/resource management and pollution prevention), but there's not very much homework because the classes are more oriented around field/lab work. I'd have a cumulative 4.0 if it wasn't for the A- I got in BoM while I was at BYU, but I think it's

Getting over a minor hangover, making vegan pancakes, and doing my homework. I'm taking 23 units this quarter (12 is a full time student, and for over 21.5 you need to get permission from the college) because I suddenly decided to double major, but the workload is surprisingly manageable! After that I'm going to draw some tentative tattoo designs.

Happy Earth Day to everyone! I'm an aspiring environmental scientist (more specifically, I'd love to be a field biologist with a focus in herpetology!), and it's really great to see how public perspectives on environmentalism have shifted in a positive direction.

Absolutely. The fashion industry is incredibly wasteful (not being self-righteous here - I definitely have much more than I need). I'm finally donating all my old church clothes, though.

I can't even imagine hypothetical evidence that could convince me. Maybe personally witnessing God, or other spiritual entities, multiple times while not under the influence of any drugs? But that scenario is so implausible it's hardly worth considering.

Calling people out can be well-deserved, but yes, nearly always it's much more effective to take other approaches. Criticism just makes people defensive and doesn't allow for any constructive discussion. Case in point: while I was at BYU I had a huge issue with some extremely homophobic comments from my professor, so in my response to that day's lecture I explained why his statements were hurtf

I'm glad to hear that! The ranch itself certainly seems far better than average in several areas, although the development is worrying. Also I'm just always very skeptical of this sort of thing, since my area has a large issue at the moment with land development proposals in agricultural areas that are being accepted with faulty Environmental Impact Assessments.

Mormon Newsroom updated its article about Deseret Cattle and Citrus in central Florida to include information about the planned development for the area. At least they're being slightly more transparent about how the "conservation" they preach about is just an attempt to make their environmental degradation more palatable. If anyone is interested, I have some commentary on the article

I'll try not to repeat what has already been said. Asian Americans were the majority at my high school, and Caucasians only make up about 20% of the student body at my current college. Meanwhile Asians at my college are about twice that, with many of them being international students who speak English as a second or third language. While that's a bit of an outlier, it just strikes me as very u

Transferring credits is too much of a pain to be worthwhile unless you have other reasons for wanting to pursue more degrees. I attended BYU for one summer term, then BYU-I for fall semester, and then transferred to a community college and left the church. I had my transcripts evaluated (a process which took six months), but the admissions office just gave me elective credit for 90% of my class

"When we say anything bad about the leaders of the Church, whether true or false, we tend to impair their influence and their usefulness and are thus working against the Lord and his cause" - George F. Yeah, I wonder if a lack of sex education had something to do with her confusion. And nope, vegans don't eat dairy or meat. No eggs, cheese, milk, yogurt, etc. Also no wool, down, leather, and other animal products. For me it's more of an environmental decision than a diet, and the only exception I make is honey (it technically isn't vegan but buying honey from local beekeepers does more go

At least in the ward I grew up in, most people ate a lot of meat and fast food, and every year there's a ward barbecue. I got plenty of raised eyebrows when I went vegetarian and some people even seemed to think I was a "bad mormon" because of it. They cited the WoW and argued that animals were placed here for our use. I even got into an argument with the bishop's wife because she di

There's a similar situation in the Silicon Valley, where there's mostly upper or middle class students with high academic pressure. I went to high school in the area and one of my friends took 5 AP classes in one year, and she retook the ACT because she "only got 35." The academic pressure is ridiculous. There've been a couple suicide clusters here (one in 2009 and another from 2014-

Earlier this year I took a Critical Thinking class for a GE requirement. By the end of the quarter we had switched almost entirely over to computational thinking, and the teacher admitted that the class was more of a preparatory coding class than anything else. That wasn't a negative thing, though, especially during debates between my atheist professor and some ardently christian students. The

I went vegetarian when I was twelve and somehow, seven years later, am a vegan, lesbian, and atheist working toward a degree in environmental science. The rest of my family are your typical omnivorous TBMs. I initially went vegetarian out of concerns for animal welfare, but that pretty quickly segued into environmental reasons such as sustainability, and later I adopted other progressive viewpo

I don't see any reason to be "offended." Being transgender is, unfortunately, often met with disgust or confusion from others. One of my closest friends and several of my acquaintances are transgender, and each of them have more than their share of horror stories about coming out and receiving backlash. If I were transgender I doubt I'd be confident enough to immediately inform any p

I'm more of a coffee person, but from my experience the best way to make tea is to boil water, steep some tea, and experiment with sweeteners. A lot of the flavors are pretty much what you'd expect (mint, for instance), although green and black teas can be an acquired taste if you aren't used to them. My favorite sweetener is honey, and lately I've just been using rosemary from my backyard to m

Sorry for your loss. I agree that, if possible, you should sit it out. My grandpa passed away in 2015 and my grandma in 2016, and in both cases I'm very glad to have opted out from singing hymns or doing anything particularly religious. Do whatever will help you get the most out of the funeral.

Yeah, I am. Sorry if I didn't make myself very clear! I was at BYU in Provo for summer term, and Idaho for fall semester. It's a long story but the short version is that I planned to go to attend Provo with some siblings for a "fun" summer, then transfer to Idaho and attend until I got my bachelors (which didn't work out).

I was just found being there too stressful and depressing. One of my roommates and I drank way too much alcohol (discreetly, of course), and she nearly killed herself. It was a really unhealthy situation so I wanted to leave as soon as possible. My original plan was to go there until I graduated, though! It didn't work out because the mental toll of attending was a lot worse than I anticipa

I'll be attending Humboldt! Most people just make weed jokes when I mention Humboldt (which, to be fair, are pretty well-deserved), but I've heard the environmental science program is good. Unfortunately I just found out I'll probably have to wait until spring semester in January of 2018 to attend, because their fall semester overlaps with the end of my summer quarter, but I'm still really exci
